December 23rd '02 - Women's working party sale and social
The sale and social held on Saturday 7 December in the church was a lively and profitable event.
A record total of £1047.85 was raised and this will be divided between the church and local charities.

Dec 14th '02 - Compliments of the Season from the Hornton Web Site

Thanks to Eleanor Campbell for the Festive Logo - we hope Yule enjoy it!
18th December '02 - Crib League Update
With 11 games played the Harbury and District Crib League is still as close as ever
Oxfordshire Planning Committee dismissed the application by the Nunneley Trust at a meeting in Oxford on 9th
September and that the decision was taken with a substantial majority of the Committee members voting against the
application
Saturday 5th October and was thought to be a great success by all those who took part - both hosts and guests. A substantial amount was raised for JUMPA both through the event itself and some additional games held at some of the venues.
16th September '02 - Pavillion set to grow
There are plans to extend the Pavilion in order to provide better kitchen and storage facilities. Permission for this
work was granted in 1998 - and it is now proposed to press ahead with fundraising and seeking grants in order to turn
the plans into reality.
Tuesday night is crib night, during the autumn/winter months. The Dun Cow team, captained by Paul Burden, play in the
'Top of the Hill' league, competing against teams mainly from Warwickshire/Northamptonshire.
Crib is easy to learn and new players are always welcome. If you've never played before, or fancy joining the team,
please enquire at the pub.
Our apologies for the delay in publishing this. You may know that Hornton's web site is maintained by the folks
up at Starveall Barn (when we aren't doing our day jobs). We have to go through a time consuming process of scanning
the paper version, checking the quality and publishing it on the web server. We have to admit, too, that we have
been enjoying the sizzling summer days that we have had since the new edition came out!
Got a view to express but can't wait for the next edition of The Gossip to get it off your chest? Hornton on-line
introduces a new letters page - on-line. eMail your submissions to gossip.bench@hornton.org.uk. Go on, let's hear
from you - make your views known!
Two letters have already been received. Not surprisingly they are replies to the controversial letters published in
Issue 45 of the Gossip. If you have a view, express it too - on any subject you like.
The editors reserve the right to edit letters for content, length and style. All letters must state the name of the
sender, which will be published - anonymous submissions are not accepted.
Meet Martyn and Gwyneth
Welcome to Martin and Gwyneth Gelling, who took over the Dun Cow on Monday 5 August and opened the same night
without missing a beat!
On Sunday 4th August 2002 Terry and Doreen Bell finally called 'Time' in The Dun Cow, their home for nineteen
eventful years. Two hundred and fifty friends and regulars were invited to the pub for a Bar B Que lunch to mark
the end of an era.
Hornton stone flags for sale, approximately 12 square metres, buyer collects. All sensible offers considered.

18th July '02: News on the web - about the web
We're popular
The Web site has been live for 7 months. We have had hundreds of visits and over 10,000 pages of information have been
viewed. Visitors have hailed from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain,
Switzerland and USA. There must be émigré Horntonians all over the world!
17th July '02: Village bike ride/pub lunch -- Sunday 21 July
The venue for the bike ride/pub lunch this Sunday (21 July) has been fixed -- the Stag's Head at Swalcliffe. It is a
nice pub with good food and a garden and the ride is not too far.
Cyclists (all welcome and it is acceptable to cycle slowly and walk up hills) will leave the Green at 11 am to arrive
at the pub at 1-ish where noncyclists are very welcome to join us for a leisurely lunch. There is a wide menu from
roast pork to ploughman's, vegetarians are catered for and tables have been booked outside in a covered seating area
(the pergola). If you arrive early by car mention "Hornton leisure cycle"!
An indication of numbers would be helpful but is not vital -- hoping to see you Sunday. Lynn Corke 670673
10th July '02: Full ,Part or DIY Competition Livery Available
8th July '02: Hornton villagers want Broadband Access
Many villages have told me that they would like Broadband Access to the internet. If you would like faster connection
times and speedier downloads then register your interest and
hopefully our exchange will be updated to allow us to take advantage of the technology that is available.
8th July '02: Hornton website t-shirts available soon!
Due to popular demand (well, a couple of requests!) we are producing t-shirts with the Hornton website lime tree logo.
They will first be on sale at just £8.50 each at the school fete on Saturday 13th July and afterwards from Lynn Corke
on 670673. Two sizes are available - medium and extra large but it may be possible to order other sizes if there is
demand.

1st July '02: Quarry Road Garden Centre Closed
The Quarry Road Garden Centre is now closed until the Autumn planting season begins, and will re-open on September 9th.
29th June '02: A Note for your Diaries
There's going to be a village bike ride over a nice easy course on July 21.
The aim is to leave at 11am from the village green and to end up at a nearby pub for lunch at 1pm where non cyclists
can join us.
Watch the web site and the village notice board for further details but if you are interested, please leave a
message for Lynn Corke on 670673 as we need to get some idea of numbers for the pub.
23rd June '02: Temporary change of venue for Yoga in Hornton
The Thursday evening Yoga class moves to the Church Rooms in Bell Street for July and the start of August. For more information

20th June '02: Jubilee Photos strike a chord with Hornton exiles
Within hours of the Jubilee festivities ending, Hornton's Photo Gallery was available on line for
Horntonians to view.
But the interest didn't stop with current villagers. The Hornton web site gets regular visits from people all over the
world. They come, they look and they go but on one occasion recently a 'foreigner' did more than that.

19th June '02: Volunteer your PC and help find a cure for cancer
Did you know you can download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver:
it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never
leaves your desk, the project never interrupts your usual PC use and your contribute to a massive research project
being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for
Cancer Research in America.
Sign up now and help in the search for a cure. Join the Hornton team and your scores will be aggregated with the
other team members to prove, once again, that there's only ONE Hornton.
4th June '02: Hornton Celebrates the Jubilee in style
In a programme of events stretching over 3 days, our little village came up trumps with something for everyone to enjoy,
the grand finale being the lighting of the beacon and fireworks on Monday 3rd. See a lot
more in our on-line photo gallery.
If you've gone digital we'd like to know. We'll be out and about over the Jubilee weekend, trying to capture events - but we can't be everywhere.
So if you take a digital photo that you're proud of, e-mail it to Paul Barrett (paulfbarrett@tiscali.co.uk) and we'll see if we can add it to our
on-line Jubilee photo gallery. We'll give you a credit.
26th May '02: Minutes of Parish Council Meeting of 15th April are available on line
25th May '02: Shall we have a Discussion Board?
This idea has been raised by a visitor to the site. The web team discussed the idea in the early days of the
site's design. Such a page needs to be constantly monitored by someone to remove unsuitable postings.
Unfortunately, this site has no permanent monitoring so we regret we are unable to provide this service.
19th May '02: Latest Gossip hits the street
It may not have created the thud that the "Sunday's" do, but the arrival of the latest edition of 'The Gossip'
can't have gone unnoticed. Weighing in at 11 pages, Issue 45 was the longest yet. And if you missed it, you
can download it here by following this link.
17th May '02: Quarry news from Bill Jeffs
I went to a North Oxfordshire Ironstone liaison meeting last night one of the outcomes was that if any
resident of Hornton feels the need to complain about noise and dust from the Quarry they should contact
Bennies site engineer David Jackson telephone 01604 766101 or mobile 0860 842855. Another feeling I got from
the meeting was that "he who shouts the loudest gets the most consideration."

16th May '02: News on the web - about the web
Logo
Thanks to Eleanor Campbell for donating a fantastic design job for us.
We're popular
The Web site has been live for 5 months. We have had hundreds of visits and over 4000 pages of information have
been viewed. Visitors have hailed from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland,
Spain, Switzerland and USA. There must be émigré Horntonians all over the world!
We're VERY popular
Closer to home, the recent Quarrying Planning Application caused a 25% leap in visits. Within 24 hours of a
request at the Parish Council Annual Meeting on 15th April, the detailed application was scanned and made
available on the web site for villagers to view. This important issue generated hundreds of visits to the site.
If anyone wondered what relevance a web site had to sleepy little Hornton, they need not look any further.
11th May '02: Quarry Nurseries opens for business
Today marked the opening of e new business in Hornton. Philip Gilbert's Quarry Nurseries in Quarry Road
(Tel: 670367, Mob: 07903 655267) is open at weekends from 10am till 8pm and on weekdays evenings from 6pm till
8pm.
7th May '02: May Day Photos
The rain threatened, but no more than that, and nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of visitors to
Hornton's May Day celebrations. Hornton Web Site was present on the day, T shirted and with camera ready to capture
the moments. See if you appear in our on-line photo Gallery.

Haj and Howard Barlow would like to thank everyone in the village for their kind wishes during the pregnancy
and since the birth of our son Jacob Singh Barlow back in 10th November 01. He is now nearly 6 months old and wonderful.
24th Apr '02: Minutes of Parish Council Meeting 11th March '02 and 2001 Annual Parish Meeting are now available.
On Monday April 15th at 7:30 pm, there is an important meeting to discuss a planning application to extend quarrying at
Hornton Grounds. Be there to express your views. For more details follow this link.
Editor's Notes:
Neither Oxfordshire County Council nor Cherwell District Council have published details of the planning application on their
web sites (so much for open government) which means we are unable to provide any useful links to appropriate sources of background
information. If anyone is able to discover any information and would like to mail it to p.f.barrett@btinternet.com, or drop it in to the
mail box at Starveall Barn, Quarry Road, we will be happy to publish it on-line.
New villagers may be wondering what all the fuss is about? Older villagers may think they have been here before. The history of
planning applications in the last 12 years have been faithfully recorded in the Gossip - our quarterly news letter. Coincidentally, last
October I gathered all these articles into a single place so if you want to read the recent history, follow the Encyclopaedia link in the
column on the right hand side of this page then 'Q' for quarrying or click here to go straight there.
8th April 2002: Broadband Internet Access
Fed up with waiting for your e-mail to download or your favourite web site to appear? The answer may be at hand.
ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) provides access at speeds up to 10 times faster than a conventional modem through a
standard telephone line at a very reasonable monthly cost. BT will only roll out the service where there is sufficient demand so please
help us move Hornton into the digital age by registering your interest at
http://www.btopenworld.com/broadband/reg10/ (If you are
not the person who pays the phone bill at your house, you should get the approval of the person who does).
19th March 2002: Local Garden Open for Viewing on 16th June.
Audrey & Eric Turner invite you to view their garden and enjoy a tea. For more details
follow this link. This is one of many gardens available for viewing. For more details seethe National Gardens Scheme website
at www.ngs.org.uk
Please assist us in taking part in the Hornton website online survey to determine
how we can continue to improve the site.
14th Feb 2002: FOUND

9th Feb '02: Lost your Cat - want to adopt one?
A black cat has been coming to our house since early November. He has a lovely shiny black coat and looks
well cared for. He would like to become part of our family but we already have a much loved cat, 'Hollie', who does not want
another cat to eat her food or share her home. Would anyone like to give 'Blackie' a good home, as it seems he doesn't belong
to anyone and may have been abandoned here? If you own him or want to adopt him call 01295 670550. Phyllis Miles
Web Editor's note to this story:
You can check the ownership of stray pets using the Hornton Online Pet Directory (see right hand menu).
Owners - if your pet is not already registered, sign up today. Use the 'Add Content' Link in the right hand menu to send us
details. If you have a digital photo you can e-mail it to us
8th Feb '02: Best Kept Village - Can we win again?
Following last year's success, Hornton has been entered into the Best Kept Village Competition - Winners Class
2002. Preliminary judging takes place between 4th and 9th May (which includes our May Day Celebration on May 6th). Final
judging is between 1st and 16th June. The Parish Council is confident that we can do it again so a special effort to keep our
patch clean, tidy and attractive will be needed, especially during the judging dates.
