Hornton’s third annual film festival - held last Saturday - was easily its most successful, with 65 people packing the pavilion.
No less than 18 films were entered for a prestigious Horny "gong" and, surprisingly, all won! In fact more Hornies were awarded by organiser Pete Whitehead than there were actual
films because every young film maker was given one in recognition of their success and promise. As well as a Horny for Tom Wain, who made The Big Domino Race, alex and Eddie Cox,
Harry Joiner and Tom Donaldson were all winners in Neil Madden's superb Neil's Movie III.
The event made lots of money for the pavilion fund - the exact total next week - which was added to the £98 raised in the Dun Cow the previous evening at the Film Quiz , where
there was a full house.
Steve Woodcock and Ollie Ficking’s questions were as fiendish as ever and they want to thank everyone who came along and made the event such a success.
25th April '07 - Simon's a Winner all the Way
Hornton’s Simon Perkin made it round the London Marathon course in three hours, 38 minutes and 27 seconds. That put him 4288th out of 36,000 runners.
But the big winner was the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, for whoim Simon was running.
“Thank you to everyone once again for their generosity and support,” said an exhausted Simon after Sunday’s marathon. “It really did make a difference in getting me round!”
And if you’d still like to sponsor him, it’s not too late. Just ring him on 01295 670701.
25th April '07 - Game, Set and Match
The JUMPA court and grounds have been getting excellent use every day through the half-term and Easter holiday period and are
proving popular with all ages.
That was the big news at the JUMPA AGM last week, when the committee was re-elected.
Because the all-weather surface is being so well used, the committee are looking to replace the net storage locker with something more substantial as a matter of urgency. They’re
also having a Spring clean on Saturday week, May 5, at 9.30am - weeding, cutting back and generally making it look good for the summer. Strimmers, back-pack sprayers, clippers and
shears are all welcome - plus some willing volunteers to wield them! Even if you can only spend half an hour helping out, that would be very much appreciated.
And everyone’s prescence will also be very much appreciated on Sunday, June 17 - Father’s Day - when the ever-popular Golden Mile will be taking place.
“Now’s the time to get into training,” says JUMPA’s Chris Woodcock. “There will be more details soon.
“We also have a couple of reminders for people using JUMPA. Please don't use bikes or roller-blades on the court surface as it
is potentially damaging the surface - but please do wear sports
soles.
“And, on a couple of occasions, the net winding mechanism has been broken. Please be aware that you only need to slacken off the net - not unwind it completely. If you find
anything broken, please let a member of the JUMPA committee know right away.
“The booking system is in operation and we would like everyone to use it. There's a weekly booking sheet inside the covered notice board attached to the court fence, so please
check it out if you would like to book a slot and to be sure you can use it when you want to. Also, the school now has regular slots of usage during term time, so please try to
avoid these.”
25th April '07 - Stone the Crows
It’s less than two weeks until Hornton’s biggest day of the year - the May Day celebrations on May 7.
This year, there are going to be new and exciting attractions and they all need people to run them, if you can help out in any way, get stuck in!
For a start, you can make a scarecrow for the new Scarecrow Competition! Any style, any colour, any size - the scarier the better! The scarecrows need to be brought along to the
village green at the start of May Day celebrations.
And if you’ve got an idea for a new stall, please get in touch with organiser Lorraine Joyner on 01295 678708 as soon as possible. It’s not too late!
Jane Wain is running a Children’s Good as New clothes stall - just in time for a spring clearout, and to re stock their summer wardrobes!
Now’s the time for that big clearout, so please leave any donations at The Swallows, Eastgate, or give her a call on 01295 670716 and she can collect them from you. All proceeds
to the Pavilion fund.
And Jennie Bowes is after good quality adults’ clothes for her good-as-new clothes stall on May Day. Contact her with goodies on 01295 670633 but she does make one plea - no
jumble, please!
If you’ve got any white elephants, Laura Short is the person to talk to on 01295 670232 and teas will be in David and Lesley Kings’ garden. If you can make a cake or help out on
the day, please call Lesley on 01295 670356.
Finally, the classic cars will be returning this year to the school playground, so if you have an interesting vehicle tucked away, please let Anne Joyner know on 01295 670337

There will be an 11am service this Sunday, April 29, in Hornton Methodist Church, the same time as a service in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.
And don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for sale
plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip! And Thursday Club meets every week after school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All children
are welcome.
19th April '07 - Simon Needs Your Support
Hornton’s Simon Perkin will be lining up with the pantomime horses, giant chickens - oh, and a few elite athletes too - for the London Marathon this Sunday, April 22. He’s
running to support the wonderful work of the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, which has provided over 4,000 children and adults the chance of a bone marrow since 1974.
The trust receives no government funding and it needs your sponsorship - as does Simon - so please back call him on 01295 670701 or email simonperkin (at) btinternet dot com
with your pledge before the big day.
19th April '07 - Lights, Camera, Question
Do you know your Charlie Chaplin from your Stephen Speilberg? If so, you might thing it would help in the Hornton Film Festival Quiz, being held tomorrow, Friday.
But since it’s being staged by Hornton’s fiendish quizmeisters, Ollie Fickling and Steve Woodcock, veterans of their past brainteasers will know that the theme rarely intrudes
too far into the night’s cryptic proceedings!
Teams of up to four people can enter the quiz - starting at the Dun Cow at 7.30pm - and there will be filmic prizes for the winners, plus a raffle. Fish and chips will be on
offer to wash down your pint of Hooky, starting at 6.30pm for those people with children who can’t make the quiz.
Then it’s time for the Big Event on the following night, when a glittering gala will celebrate Hornton’s finest filmmakers at the festival itself. The Pavilion will be looking
at its best and Tinseltown’s most prestigious “gongs” will be given out to the village’s most talented film directors. The “gongs” are the Horneys, of course, nbot to be confused
with the Oscars and other inferior awards.
Even now it’s not too late to enter a short film. All you have to do is call festival organiser Pete Whitehead on 01295 670320 for more details.
But even if you haven’t got a film in the can, you can’t miss the big night. There’s free bubbly - courtesy of the Banbury Guardian sixpence-a-line Hornton column cash - canapés
and a chance to see the premieres of Hornton’s finest filmic offerings.
So get out your gladrags and reserve a ticket. They’re just £6 for adults and £2 for children under 16, available from Hornton’s Ticket Queen, Julie Stanley, on 01295
670507.
The glittering proceedings kick off at 8pm on Saturday, so see you there!
19th April '07 - Good as New
At the May Day celebrations Jane Wain is running a Children’s Good as New clothes stall - just in time for a spring clearout, and to re stock their summer wardrobes!
Now’s the time for that big clearout, so please leave any donations at The Swallows, Eastgate, or give her a call on 01295 670716 and she can collect them from you. All proceeds

19th April '07 - It Might Sound Batty But...
Hornton’s plans for refurbishing the pavilion have been left hanging in the air for a few weeks, which is pretty appropriate since the cause of all the trouble is…bats.
Long-eared bats and pipistrels are using the roof as a roost and you can’t just kick ’em out. They’ve got to be given alternative accommodation. Having discovered evidence of
the bats in one survey, there will be another next month, and a pavilion committee meeting will be held on June 7 to hear all.
In the meantime, pavilion extension co-ordinator Andy Perry has put all grant applications on hold. If bats are up in the belfry, you need a government licence to move
them.
“ Until the survey is completed and a licence obtained, there is little work that can be carried out on the pavilion,” says Andy. “All grants applications have been put on
hold as generally they require the money to be spent within three months of acquiring the funds.”

19th April '07 - May Day's Just Weeks Away
It’s time to plan your scarecrow for May Day! This year, Hornton’s holding a scarecrow competition and it’s after the most imaginative scarecrows you ever did see!
All the scarecrows will be auctioned off at the end for village funds, so sign up your scarecrow today by calling Anne Joyner on 01295 670337!
On May Day itself, May 7, you might just have time to skip up to Upton House, where there will be family trails and activities from 12 noon till 4pm. Just don’t miss the
excitement back in Hornton!
19th April '07 - Godhead to Godhead
There will be an 11am service at Hornton Methodist Church this Sunday, April 22, the same time as Holy Eucharist is celebrated at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.
Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for sale
plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip! And the Thursday Club meets every week after school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All
children are welcome.
12th April '07 - Hitting the Jackpot
It’s not often a report of a Hornton bingo session
hits the headlines after the event. But it’s not often that bingo can
raise almost £200! And that’s what happened when the Parish Church’s
Ladies’ Working Party staged their latest “eyes down”.
It was almost standing room only in the Church Room and, by the end of the
evening, an astounding £192-60 was raised to go to the upkeep of the
Parish Church of St John the Baptist and other good causes. Well done!
12th April '07 - Cribbers Creep Up
Last November, they were bottom of the league. Now the
Dun Cow crib team have moved right up the Harbury and District Crib League
to finish the season in second spot!
Hornton ended up with 22 points, just two points behind the Carpenters
Arms from Kineton. The Dun Cow achieved the same total as the Harbury Club
from Harbury but they had a better points difference by just one point.
And that was down to the way the Hornton cribbers performed in their final
match of the season, on April 3. In the final round of matches, Harbury
beat their opponents - champions-elect Carpenters - 4-3 away but Hornton
thrashed the Cottage Inn at Ashorne 5-2 away, sealing the runners-up spot.
A great result, Hornton!
12th April '07 - Roll up for Free Champagne
It’s an irresistible headline, isn’t it? And
it’s for real!
It’s all happening on Saturday week, April 21, at the star-studded
champagne reception which opens the Hornton Film Festival. For your £6 VIP
ticket - £2 for starlettes of school age - you get canapés and a first
look at all the films vying for Tinseltown’s most prestigious gong, a
Horny.
But the sixpence-a-line money from the Hornton column of the Banbury
Guardian has chipped in so that everyone can start off proceedings with a
free glass or two of bubbly!
It all happens at 8pm in Hornton Pavilion and tickets are available from
Julie Stanley on 01295 670507. Reserve yours today!
It’s not too late to enter a short film for the festival. Organiser Pete
Whitehead on 01295 670320 is the man to talk to.
And the filmic fun doesn’t stop there. In the Dun Cow at 7.30pm the day
before, April 20, Hornton’s formidable quizmeisters, Ollie Fickling and
Steve Woodcock, will be getting teams to pit their wits for a special film
quiz. Don’t know anything about film? Don’t worry. It wouldn’t help you if
you did, so cunning are Ollie and Steve’s cryptic questions!
But there will be lots of funk to be had and a special fish and chip
supper to eat, if you’d like one. In fact, Gwyneth will be cooking from
6.30 to 7.45pm for anyone who’d like to eat but can’t come to the quiz.
12th April '07 - By George, it's Lunchtime
The Dun Cow is serving a special St George’s
Day lunch on Sunday week, April 22. On the menu will be - what else? - but
traditional Sunday roast beef with all the trimmings. If you’d like to

school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All children are

5th April '07 - Club Crisis
Hornton’s immensely-successful Youth Club is going to have to close its doors after Easter if someone doesn’t step forward to help out.
Organisers Ian Harris and Les England desperately need extra help because they can no longer run the club entirely by themselves but a plea two weeks ago has attracted no
response.
“Les and I are still willing to rethink if help does come forward in the future but, so far we’ve had no substantive response to our plea for help, so we have decided not
to renew membership and insurance,” said Ian. “Sadly that means the club will close after Easter.”
You don’t have to take over running the club entirely, just help out every so often on a Thursday evening during term time. So if you can help keep the club going - and
contribute to the lives of Hornton’s youngsters - please contact Ian on 01295 670541 as soon as possible.
5th April '07 - Lights, Camera, Question
