Next week you can raise money for our
beautiful churches by walking or cycling round our beautiful countryside.
It all takes place on Saturday, September 10, in the annual Oxfordshire
Churches Ride and Stride.
The idea is simple: you get sponsored to walk or cycle to as many churches
in a day as you want, then half the money goes to the church of your choice
and half to the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust.
If you would like to take part, please ring Julie Stanley on 01295 670507.
31st August '05 - In the Club
The annual meeting for Panther car owners and enthusiasts
takes place this Saturday, September 3, in the historic setting of Upton
House.
And Upton’s action-packed year continues on Wednesday, when there's a
special day for visitors to see some of the techniques used by the National
Trust to care for its many delicate objects. Conservation in Action takes

On Thursday, there’s a special day for those with a passion for fine art.
If fine art is your passion, you only have to wait until the following day.
Art connoisseur Oliver Lane will be taking enthusiasts around Upton's
magnificent collection of Flemish pictures on the first of three tours.
A second on September 15 looks at works by Dutch artists and the final one
on September 22 examines the works of British artists. Pre-booking for the
sessions is essential and they cost £10 for one session, £18 for two and £24
for all three. They run from 10am to 12 noon and coffee is included.
You can get more details by calling Upton on 01295 670266.
And the weekend after next - September 10 and 11 - woodland events will take
centre stage in Wood Wizardry. There will be hands-on art and craft

natural versatility of wood. The event runs from noon to 4pm and once again

25th August '05 - 4E's Win Out In £H's
An Eric, an Eileen, an Elisabeth and an Edith carried off four of the top prizes at
the 3Hs Gardening Club annual flower and produce sale. But just to prove you don’t
have to be an E to be a winner, a Phyllis and a Joy joined them!
The show, which took place last Saturday at Hornton pavilion, saw Eric Turner once
again lift the vegetable cup, with Danny Batchelor as reserve; Eileen Lewis won the
flower cup, with Hazel Bannister runner-up; Elisabeth Jeffs took top honours in flower
arranging and Joy Hillman came out first in cooking, with Audrey Turner and Edith
Batchelor tied in second place.
Edith Batchelor was the overall winner and the President’s Cup, presented by Lord
Tweedsmuir for his favourite exhibit, was won by Phyllis Miles for a red rose.
“It was a great success,” said club secretary Lady Tweedsmuir. “There were as many
competitors as last year and the judges said the entries were of a very good standard.”
Full details of the winners in each class in next week’s Guardian.
25th August '05 - Pad Up To Upton
The annual meeting for Panther car owners and enthusiasts takes place on Saturday week, September
3, at Upton House.

Action, when you can see demonstrations and displays of the techniques used by the National Trust

If fine art is your passion, you only have to wait until the following day, September 8, for the

25th August '05 - Will You Do Good?
Hornton has a Goodwill Fund to send a card, a small gift and our good wishes to village people
who are sick, just to let them know we are thinking of them - and it needs your cash.
The idea came from villager Jean Burden, whose mother ran a similar scheme in Cropredy, where
it was a great success.
"It's just really a practical way of us showing that we're concerned about people who are ill,"
said Jean.
"We decided to start it here because there was one little girl in the village who is very poorly.
I thought it would be nice if we could send her a box of things that she could do and then we
thought it would be a nice idea a for anyone else who is ill."
What the Goodwill Fund really needs is donations, so that a gift most suitable for the recipient
can be bought. If you'd like to give some money, please contact Jean at Barry Cottage, Miler's
Lane, or call her on 01295 670664.
25th August '05 - Flying The Flag
If you - or someone you love - has a birthday or anniversary coming up you can celebrate in style
with your name on the Hornton celebration flag, fluttering at the top of the flagpole on the
village green. If you’re brave enough, you even have your age included! All you have to do is
to ring Ian Harris on 01295 670541, slip him a fiver for village funds and the Hornton flag
will flutter just for you.
25th August '05 - Godhead to Godhead
There will be a service at 11am in Hornton Methodist Church this Sunday, August 28. At the same
time, there will also be a service in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.
Don’t forget that all children are welcome to Sunday School, which takes place in the Methodist
Church every Sunday from 9.45 to 10.45 am, and to Thursday Club every Thursday from after school
to 4.30pm.
17th August '05 - Pot Those Petunias
It's showtime again at the 3Hs Gardening Club. On
Saturday, Hornton's greenest fingers will be vying for top prizes against
the gardeners of Horley and Hanwell in the club's annual Flower and Produce
Show.
Who'll win the Vegetable Cup? Who'll be top at cooking? There's only one way
to find out and that's to pop along to the pavilion on Saturday afternoon
and find out. Better still, why not go along from 9.15 to 11.15 am and enter
your own exhibit for a prize? Club secretary Sally Tweedsmuir has the show
schedule - including recipes for the cooking competitions - and you can call
her on 01295 670608 for more details. Viewing begins at 2.30pm.
17th August '05 - Going Down a Storm
Hornton playground’s new climbing frame, the Snowstorm,
proved an immediate hit with the village children when it was officially
opened last Saturday.
And the adults had a good time, too, because the opening coincided with the
playground’s annual coffee morning.
The Snowstorm was bought thanks to the generosity of Mike Webber, who
tragically died the year before last and left the playground a bequest in
his will.
Playground committee member and parish council chairman David Miles said the
event really went well.
“The weather was right - it couldn’t have worked out better,” he said. “I
think everybody had a good time.
And the local children’s hospice, Helen House, also benefited. The coffee
morning made a total of £202-45 - £25 from the lucky square stall, £40-95
from the bring and buy, £54-50 from the coffee and produce stall and £82
from the raffle. All of this was donated to Helen House.
17th August '05 - For Art's Sake
There will be something for everyone as Hornton plays host
to three exciting events over the next few months in the Cherwell Arts At
Large series. On Saturday, October 29th, Hank Wangford and Reg Meuross return
to the pavilion with their quirky country music show.
Then on November 11th, Australian music duo Mundy Turner will be performing
classical, blues, folk and rock music in the Methodist Church.
Finally, on December 1st, it's time for the kids to have a treat with a
performance of Pinocchio, preceded by a workshop.
Julie Stanley on 01295 670507 is the Queen of Tickets for all these
occasions, so book up soon and avoid disappointment!
17th August '05 - Hollywood hits Hornton
It's coming back by public demand, it’s bigger and
better than ever - and this time there's no excuse for not being ready.
It's one of the most successful events of this year - the Hornton Film
Festival - and Pete Whitehead has stepped forward to organise another one
for 2006.
"For the Hornton Film Festival 2006, there is a 'theme', although one that I
hope will inspire rather than constrain," said Pete. "The inspiration for
the films should be a favourite music track, although the way that the music
is incorporated could be in a number of forms - as a soundtrack, a starting
point for a fictional plot or a straight music video."
Once again, entrants will be vying for one of the film industry's top
"gongs" - the Hornies - and Peter wants even more entrants than last year.
"If anyone has a film that was being put together for the 2005 festival but
never quite made it in time, we can find a special slot for it, even if it
does not follow the theme for 2006."
Please give Pete a ring any time on 01295 670320 for advice and to tell him
that you are interested in entering. He says there is now so much technical
backup in the village that anyone who would like help just needs to call.
17th August '05 - Pedal or Plod
You can walk or cycle round our beautiful countryside and
raise much-needed cash for our equally beautiful churches in the annual Ride
and Stride which takes place next month.
The idea is simple: you get sponsored to walk or cycle to as many churches
in a day as you want, then half the money goes to the church of your choice
and half to the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust.
It all takes place on Saturday, September 10, but it's never too early to
pick up a form and start collecting sponsors. If you would like to take
part, please ring Julie Stanley on 01295 670507.
17th August '05 - Roar up to Upton

at 11am.
11th August '05 - Ground Coffee
A coffee morning will be held in Hornton Children’s Playground this Saturday at 10am to raise
money for Helen House
Children’s Hospice in Banbury.
You can have a go on lucky squares, browse through the bring-and-buy stall or even buy a ticket
in a traditional Hornton
raffle. And you’ll be helping to raise money for a very good cause at the same time!
11th August '05 - Carry on Camping
And Hornton will! Last Saturday saw the first-ever Hornton Camp and it was so successful that it’s
already destined to
become an annual event in the already-packed village social calendar.
A grand total of 21 adults, 19 children and four dogs squeezed into 13 tents at Folly Farm near
Bourton-on-the-water.
The children played cricket and football, the adults had lots to drink and the weather was kind.
What more could you
want, apart from home-made hamburgers for dinner and bacon sandwiches the following morning?
Well they were laid on too, and special thanks must go to Harriet Cox and Fiona Donaldson
who arranged all the catering.
See you at the next camp!
11th August '05 - Pot Those Petunias
It’s showtime again at the 3Hs Gardening Club. On Saturday week,
August 20th, Hornton’s greenest
fingers will be vying for top prizes against the gardeners of Horley and Hanwell in the club’s
annual Flower and Produce
Show. Who’ll win the vegetable Cup? Who’ll be top at cooking? There’s only one way to find out
and that’s to pop along to
the pavilion in the afternoon on Saturday week and find out. Better still, why not go along in
the morning and enter your
own prize exhibit? Club secretary Sally Tweedsmuir has the show schedule- including new recipes
for the cooking
competitions - and you can call her on 01295 670608 for more details.

11th August '05 - Nectar from the Gods
The third annual Hornton Summer Beer Festival attracted real ale fans from all over Oxfordshire
and Warwickshire the
weekend before last to the Dun Cow.
Landlord Martin Gelling lined up a sumptuous array of more than a dozen real ales and ciders,
with “Heavens Above” the
theme of the three-day event. That meant you could sample beers with names like Moonshine,
Moonbeam and Jupiter.
The next big event at the pub will be the annual Bank Holiday Monday Blues Festival starring
local favourites The Mighty
Firebirds. It takes place on August 29 from midday onwards, with several other bands playing
in support. More details
nearer the time.
11th August '05 - Calling all Cribbers
The Dun Cow crib team urgently needs new players to join their already star-studded line-up.
If you can play crib - or
if you’d like to learn - please contact captain Paul Burden on 01295 670664 or Martin Gelling
on 01295 670524 for details.
The team play in the Harbury and District Crib League on a Tuesday, the company is really good
and the team has had
plenty of success over the last couple of years, so why not join them and make this season more
successful than ever!
11th August '05 - Jumping for Joy by Christmas
JUMPA, Hornton and Horley's Jubilee fund for a multi-purpose play area,
should be up and running
by Christmas and will even have a bit of money in the bank.
The good news awaited parish councillors at their latest meeting on July 25. JUMPA had raised
£40,983 but an additional grant has since been awarded by the SITA company for £11,000.
The cost of the project has increased to £37,000 but this still leaves a healthy surplus.
Councillors were told that work should commence in October for completion by Christmas.
“This is a fabulous effort by both the committee and all those in Hornton and Horley who have
been so supportive,” says
JUMPA chairman Steve Woodcock.”
The JUMPA team will continue to hold a few fund-raising events to
run and maintain the playing
surface once it is open
and another progressive dinner party is planned for later this year.
But parish councillors were less pleased about a plan to redevelop Varneys Garage and scrapyard
in Quarry Road for
housing. Concerns were expressed that, while this may improve the general appearance of the site,
it would create an
unwelcome precedent which could lead to unwanted future development in a green belt area and the
council has objected
to the plan.
The Clerk has undertaken a survey of street signs around the village. It was agreed that there
should be a request for a
sign at the top end of Bell Street and the bottom end of Millers Lane
Cllr Paul Burden told the meeting that the replacement of oak trees on the allotments has not
been successful. He
proposed trying walnut trees as replacements and this was agreed.
Meanwhile, the round green will see a facelift soon. Cllr Eric Turner and Cllr David Miles will
change the electric
box on the round green to a smaller one and Cllr Malcolm Cross is going to buy new flower tubs.
That will be in plenty of time for the next Best Kept Village Competition. This year, Hornton
finished fourth, the
meeting.
The next parish council meeting is on Monday, September 26, and all members of the public are
welcome.
