Hornton Archive - August 2007

30th August '07 - Child's Play

Pop along to the Children’s Playground this Saturday, September 1, when their annual coffee morning will be taking place between 10.30am and 12 noon.

As well as coffee, tea and biscuits, there will be a bring-and-buy stall plus the traditional Hornton raffle - and all in a good cause.

30th August '07 - Step It Out

If you fancy walking around our beautiful countryside and raising money for a good cause, put Saturday week, September 8 in your diary!

That’s the day for the annual Ride and Stride organised by the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust, in which you raise sponsorship money by visiting as many of our historic churches as possible.

Sharp-eyed readers will have noticed by now that, since the event’s called Ride and Stride, it might not be necessary to walk to each of the churches. It’s not, for you can ride your bike instead, though sneaking around in a car is frowned on!

Half the money you raise will go to the trust and the rest to a church or churches of your choice. In the past, a tidy sum has been raised for Hornton’s Parish and Methodist Churches and if you’d like to take part this year, please call Julie Stanley on 01295 670507 for a sponsorship form.

Lynn Corke is definitely doing the Ride and Stride and if you’d like to sponsor her, please ring her on 01295 670673.

30th August '07 - Dance Like a Bee

You’ve seen the Morris Men - now meet the Morris Ladies!

The Nancy Butterfly Morris Ladies from Redditch are Dancing at the Dun Cow on Sunday week, September 9, as part of their Cotswold tour.

Come down to feast your eyes on two of our finest traditions - a pint of Hookey and a troupe of Morris dancers - between 1 and 1.45pm.

30th August '07 - Toddle Down to Horley

Hornton Toddlers is relocating temporarily to Horley Cricket club from next Wednesday, September 5.

The generosity of the cricket club means that the group can continue to meet as usual from 10.30am to midday every Wednesday. The toddlers have had to move from Hornton Pavilion because Peachtree Pre-School needs the space whilst building work is taking place at the village primary school.

“We will be moving back to the Pavilion once the works are completed,” said Laura Short, who thanked the cricket club for taking in the toddlers temporarily.

If you have a toddler and would like to come along to the group, please contact Laura on 01295 670232 - or just turn up on any Wednesday.

30th August '07 - On the Menu

Please keep the evening of Saturday, September 29, free in your diary for a culinary trip down memory lane.

That’s the day when you can pop along to the pavilion for a bygone taste of school dinners in an entertaining evening organised by Peachtree Pre-School.

Plans are still being worked on but rumours that anyone who doesn’t turn up will be given Six of the Best are being denied by the organisers.

30th August '07 - Still Making History

If you were away on holiday a couple of weeks ago, you will have missed the news that Hornton will soon have a new society to add to its ever-growing number of village activities - a history group to record and research the village’s past history.

The idea came because there was so much interest in the Hornton May Day Photograph Exhibition and Kevin Wain has kindly agreed to lead the meetings.

The meetings should begin on a monthly basis in October but Kevin and fellow organiser Liz Jeffs would like to hear in the meantime from anyone who may be interested in taking part. You can call Kevin on 01295 670716 and Liz on 01295 670529.

30th August '07 - You'd Be Nuts To Miss It

Caratinga are coming to Hornton!

Caratinga are an exciting ensemble who perform music from their native Brazil on a variety of instruments, including the seven-string guitar, mandolin, percussion, cavaquinho and violin - plus the voice of their Brazilian vocalist, Leandra.

The music’s infectious, it’s live and it’s in the heart of our community. So turn the telly off on Saturday, October 27, and come along to the Methodist Chapel for a couple of hours of great entertainment.

Tickets prices are to be confirmed but they’ll be available from Julie Stanley on 01295 670507. Since it’s all part of Cherwell’s Arts at Large season, you’re already paying for part of those tickets through your council tax, so pop along, get your money’s worth and have a great time!

30th August '07 - Rock On

Bright sunshine and big crowds quickly banished any fears that there would be fewer people at this year’s Blues Cruise.

For the first time in its 24-year history, it was moved from Bank Holiday Monday to the Saturday and the move was so successful that organiser Mark Bowes said they would definitely stick with the change of date for next year.

“From now on, it will definitely be a Saturday event,” said Mark. “None of us are getting any younger and the Saturday gives some of the older rockers a bit more time to recover, instead of having to go to work the next day.”

The Saturday scheduling was not the only innovation this year. The band were kept dry - not that they needed to with the weekend weather - by three new canopies, bought by the village and now available to anyone holding an event. There were also new stalls and a fantastic array of Harley Davidson motorbikes after Mark contacted all the HD clubs in the area.

The event was, effectively, a sell-out. £1800 was taken on the door and the BBQ took another £480. That left more than £1600 was raised for village causes after expenses. The Dun Cow also did a huge trade, with long queues of thirsty customers stretching across both bars for the whole afternoon.

Apologies to Guardian readers for mistakenly saying in last week’s column that the Blues Cruise was taking place on Bank Holiday Monday. The column did make it clear later that the event was being held on Saturday.

23rd August '07 - Saturday Night's Alrigt for Singing

For the first time in 24 years, the renowned Hornton Summer Blues Cruise is taking place this Bank Holiday Saturday, August 25, instead of the Monday.

And the show will go on even if it rains – in tru Glastonbury-style – because the date’s not the only big change being introduced this year. For the first time the musicians will be under cover.

Festival organiser Mark Bowes, of The Mighty Firebirds, said the main reason for the change was to allow the bands to play for longer – from 2pm to 7.30pm this year.

“It also gives festival bands and revellers chance to recover before their return to work!” he added.

“This year once again promises to be a real cracker, as we will be celebrating the life of Firebirds guitarist Ivor Shawyer who will have been gone for 10years this year.

And for the first time ever we will no longer be” weather permitting” as we will have a covered stage. All the fans need to do is to turn up and bring appropriate clothing.

“As always, there will be fantastic real ales on hand plus a BBQ and ice creams.”

Anyone wishing to run any other stalls will be welcome but they must book with Mark in advance on 01295 670633 and make an agreed donation to Hornton village funds.

Tickets for the event itself are just £5 each – with children under 12 free – and all profits will go to village funds.

Acts confirmed so far are The Mighty Firebirds, Deep Purple cover band Taste of Purple, Caravan of Whores and Jake Jacobs.

23rd August '07 - Step it out with Two Feet

Monday Bank Holiday was due to be a bit quiet this year, with the Blues Cruise moving to Saturday. So Jane and Simon Perkin have “stepped in” and organised Walk Number One – from Hornton to the National Herb Centre at Warmington.

Walkers should gather on the green at 9.50am on Monday for a 10 o’clock start and everyone should arrive at the herb centre in time for a cup of coffee or a light lunch.

Walk Number Two is on Saturday, September 8. That’s the day when you can walk around our beautiful countryside and raise money for a good cause at the same time!

The annual Ride and Stride is organised by the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust and you raise sponsorship money by visiting as many of our historic churches as possible.

Sharp-eyed readers will have noticed by now that, as the event’s called Ride and Stride, it might not be necessary to walk to each of the churches.

23rd August '07 - Childs Play

Pop along to the Children’s Playground on Saturday week, September 1, when the annual coffee morning will be taking place between 10.30am and 12 noon. As well as coffee, tea and biscuits, there will be a bring and buy stall plus the traditional Hornton raffle –in a good cause.

23rd August '07 - Batchelor Boy

Last year Edith Batchelor won the shield for the most points in the 3Hs Gardening Club annual flower and produce show. This year it was the turn of other member of the husband and wife team, Danny, to win out.

After such atrocious weather, everyone was delighted with the standard and number of entries. Full details of all the prize-winners in nest week’s Guardian.

The club’s next event is a talk given by Frank Hardy on Tuesday, September 11.

23rd August '07 - Pole Position

On Friday night, we were in a bit of a spot, to be honest. There had been a magnificent response to the pavilion committee’s plea for many hands to make light work of erecting the tent for Saturday’s barn dance. But a sharp-eyed Ian Harris had spotted that a pole was missing from the army surplus tent after he’d laid out all the parts were laid out in the pavilion!

A mad dash down the M40 by Lyn and Ollie Fickling saved the day and the tent was soon up, thanks to the help of around 20 volunteers. And the tent made a superb venue for the barn dance, where a large and enthusiastic crowd danced along to Shenlow Rakes.

About £200 was raised for the Hornton Pavilion refurbishment fund.

23rd August '07 - Fun on Fridays

If the kids are bored during the summer holidays, take them up to Upton for Fun Fridays - every Friday in August from midday to 4pm. There'll be loads of hands-on activities for all ages.

You can discover traditional building crafts, have-a-go archaeology and all things brilliant about buildings in Building Detectives on the weekend of September 1 and 2. All the activities, demonstrations and tours take place between noon and 4pm.

And now’s the time to sign up to the next of the very successful tours round Upton’s priceless art collection. It takes place on September 13 and is called New Light on Old Masters: Religion & Mythology.

On this exclusive, expert-led art tour, participants will examine religious art and classical mythology through Upton’s important collections, including works by Hieronymus Bosch and El Greco. Tickets are £12.00 each and the two-hour tour begins at 10am.

You can get more information on all these events from Upton on 01295 670266 or by email on uptonhouse (at) nationaltrust.org.uk. Bookings can be made on 01295 671121.

23rd August '07 - Church Services

There will be an 11am service at Hornton Methodist Church this Sunday. At there is a Benefice Eucharist in St Peter’s in Hanwell at 10-30 am there will be no service in the parish church this Sunday.

Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for sale plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip!

16th August '07 - Jam the Day after Tomorrow

It’s not just prize petunias and peas that you can enter in this Saturday’s 3Hs Gardening Club show, you know. There are awards for prize preserves as well!

So if you’ve got a gooseberry jam to grab ’em or a marmalade to make the mouth water, pop along to the pavilion on Saturday morning, August 18, between 9.15 and 11.15 am and enter it - along with all your favourite vegetables, plants and flowers, of course.

There’s just one tiny catch - you’ve got to be in it to win it. But there’s still just time to join the 3Hs if you ring Sally Tweedsmuir on 01295 670608 or Malcolm Cross on 01295 670562 before Saturday.

The show itself opens at 2.30pm and those sought-after certificates and cups will be awarded around 4pm.

16th August '07 - On the Ropes

The Hornton Barn Dance takes place this Saturday - but there won’t be a “barn” for dancing unless YOU can do your bit!

The “barn” in question is an old army tent but the organisers need at least a dozen people to help erect it and take it down again.

Pavilion committee member Chris Woodcock said that they need volunteers to help put it up at 6pm tomorrow, Friday, and take it down at noon on Sunday.

“It is really a case of the more the merrier as it's big and heavy and needs a person on every pole!” said Chris.

“We are hoping for a really good fund-raiser for Pavilion refurbishment expenditure, so we also need as many people to come along as possible. Sarah Walther has got tickets, so if we can sell some in advance that’ll help.

“Please contact her on 01295 670627 or a committee member if you would like to arrange for a group to come along. We will obviously also still sell tickets on the door/flap for £5 if you’re over 11, half price for children.”

And if you can help do a stint on the BBQ at some point, please contact Chris on 01295 670795. As ever, prizes for the traditional Hornton raffle would be most gratefully received.

“It’ll be a great evening,” added Chris. “We’ve live music from the Shenlow Rakes, and a vintage WWII tent to dance the night away in - and all for just a fiver!”

16th August '07 - Making History

Hornton will soon have a new club to add to the ever-growing number of village activities - a history group to record and research the village’s past history.

The idea arose from the huge amount of interest in the Hornton May Day Photograph Exhibition and Kevin Wain, has kindly agreed to lead the group’s meetings.

They should begin on a monthly basis in October but, in the meantime, Kevin and fellow organiser Liz Jeffs would like to hear from anyone who may be interested in taking part. You can call Kevin on 01295 670716 and Liz on 01295 670529.

16th August '07 - See 'em on the Saturday

A great Hornton tradition has been broken - only to be replaced by an even better one!

For the past 23 years, there’s only been one place to go on August Bank Holiday Monday for every true Horntonian and that’s the renowned Summer Blues Cruise at the Dun Cow.

But now it’s moving to Bank Holiday Saturday, August 25.

Festival organiser Mark Bowes, of The Mighty Firebirds, said the main reason for the change was to allow the bands to play for longer - from 2pm to 7.30pm this year.

“It also gives festival bands and revellers chance to recover before their return to work!” he added.

“This year once again promises to be a real cracker, as we will be celebrating the life of Firebirds’ guitarist Ivor Shawyer who will have been gone for 10years this year.”

16th August '07 - Whatalottabottle

Keep your eyes on your pintas! Hornton Neighbourhood Watch report that milk left by the milkman on doorsteps in Bell Street and on The Green has gone missing that several times over the past two months.

16th August '07 - Roar up to Upton

Upton House is holding the next event in the House Heydays season this Sunday, August 19, when the house will return to the roaring 20s for a day of period fun.

There will be costumed characters, period games, family trails, vintage cars, jazz bands and more from midday to 4pm.

And if the kids are bored during the Summer holidays, take them up to Upton for Fun Fridays - every Friday in August from midday to 4pm. There'll be loads of hands-on activities for all ages.

16th August '07 - Summer Leaves

The mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council will be on the village green next Wednesday, August 22, from 10.40 to 11.20am.

16th August '07 - Church Services

Mattins will be celebrated at 10.30am in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist this Sunday, August 19. Half an hour later there will be a service at the Methodist Church.

And don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for sale plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip!

9th August '07 - Onto the Drawing Board

Hopes of Hornton building affordable housing have moved a crucial step close with news that planning consultants are preparing detailed drawings for four homes on the Pavilion Car Park area.

If the plans go ahead, a couple of two-bedroom homes will be built there plus two with one bedroom each.

But the Parish Council, at whose recent meeting the plans were confirmed, emphasised that villagers will have the opportunity to see the plans and ask questions at an exhibition prior to a formal planning application.

And villagers will also be consulted about where the car park will be re-sited if the homes are built. It may be appropriate to consider car parking arrangements for late evening functions which can be disturbing for local residents, councillors were told.

The meeting was also told that it now looks certain that the land on which Hornton’s allotments are located will have to be sold. It’s owned by the John Fox Charity but the cost of insuring it is more than the charity receives each year in rent. Parish clerk Alan Cater will liaise with the Charity Commission to establish the feasibility of selling the land.

Meanwhile, Cherwell District Council is again encouraging the use of blue recycling wheeled bins, costing just £20 each. The Parish Council will receive a commission of £5 per bin if five or more orders are placed through them.

Councillors expressed concern about the affect of the recent torrential rain, which caused flooding in Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir’s property and other adjoining properties were threatened.

Prior to the flooding, representatives of the Environment Agency had undertaken a site visit and are due to present a report. The Parish Council is keen to support the residents affected and the Clerk will write to the Environment Agency to try to establish some solution. He will also write to Oxon Highways for work to be done along West End to direct rainwater to the drains rather than down the footpath. This work also needs to take away rainwater from the roof of the large garage alongside the footpath.

The council chairman, Cllr David Miles, reported that the Fox family have donated a seat to the village. It was agreed that this should be placed on the Green near the garages - opposite to where the Fox family used to live.

And appreciation was expressed to Cllr Paul Burden, Cllr Miles and the team of people who cleared the area along Tink-a-Tank between Millers Lane and the Churchyard.

9th August '07 - Baby Bats are in the Belfry

It’s official - we’ve got bats in the pavilion loft - and some of them are baby bats, because the common pipistrelle is using the roof void as a place for breeding.

But there’s also evidence of rarer brown long-eared bats, according to the latest bat survey.

Bat expert Merryl Gelling, whose Mum and Dad run the Dun Cow, carried out the definitive survey at dusk on July 17 and there were bats galore!

“Fifty six common pipistrelles were counted,” says Merryl in her report to the Pavilion Committee. “One brown long-eared bat was recorded emerging from the south west facing gable end. It is likely that more brown long-eared bats emerged earlier, but their quiet echo-location was masked by the high level of louder pipistrelle activity.”

The existence of bats in the building has big implications for extending the pavilion. The extension plans can still go ahead but the village will have to make sure that the bats have somewhere to go during the building work - or that the work is completed out of the breeding season.

It also means that the pavilion plans will have to be altered. Brown long-eared bats in particular require a large area in which to fly and roost, so the refurbished pavilion will have to provide a penthouse for our furry friends. This means that the original plan - to use the present loft as a storage facility - will almost certainly have to be changed and it’s likely that we will need to build a bigger ground floor area instead.

Pavilion Committee chairman Ian Harris said that the village would be kept fully informed about the implications of the bat discovery. Various alternative designs would be considered and the village would be consulted before one is chosen.

In the meantime, work on the new kitchen can begin because it doesn’t disturb the bats.

9th August '07 - Bloomin' Marvellous

It’s the highlight of the 3Hs Gardening Club calendar - the annual Flower and Vegetable Show - and it all happens on Saturday week, August 18.

There’s still time for you to enter your prize blooms and beans but you’ve got to be in it to win it, so join the 3Hs today by ringing Treasurer Malcolm Cross now on 01295 670562.

9th August '07 - Get Roped In

The Hornton Barn Dance is on Saturday week, August 18, but it will only go with a swing if YOU do your bit!

The dance is going to be held in an old army tent but the organisers need at least a dozen people to help erect it and take it down again.

Pavilion committee member Chris Woodcock said that they need volunteers to help put it up at 6pm on Friday week and take it down at noon on the day after the dance, August 19.

“It is really a case of the more the merrier as it's big and heavy and needs a person on every pole!” said Chris.

“We are hoping for a really good fund-raiser for Pavilion refurbishment expenditure, so we also need as many people to come along as possible. Sarah Walther is going to produce tickets, so if we can sell some in advance that’ll help. Please contact here on 01295 670627 or an committee member if you would like to arrange for a group to come along. We will obviously also still sell tickets on the door/flap for £5 if you’re over 11, half price for children.”

And if you can help do a stint on the BBQ at some point, please contact Chris on 01295 670795. As ever, prizes for the traditional Hornton raffle would be most gratefully received.

“Hopefully it’ll be a great evening,” added Chris. “We’ve live music from the Shenlow Rakes, and a vintage WWII tent to dance the night away in - and all for just a fiver!”

9th August '07 - We Won't Be Wet!

Glastonbury-style galoshes won’t be necessary at Hornton’s very own music festival this year because for the first time the musicians will be under cover.

And that’s not the only change to the renowned Summer Blues Cruise because, for the first time in 24 years, it’s going to take place on the Saturday of the Summer Bank Holiday - August 25 - instead of the Monday.

Festival organiser Mark Bowes, of The Mighty Firebirds, said the main reason for the change was to allow the bands to play for longer - from 2pm to 7.30pm this year.

“It also gives festival bands and revellers chance to recover before their return to work!” he added.

Tickets for the event itself are just £5 each - with children under 12 free - and all profits will go to village funds.

Acts confirmed so far are The Mighty Firebirds, Deep Purple cover band Taste of Purple, Caravan of Whores and Jake Jacobs.

9th August '07 - Bank Holiday Fun-Day

Now that the Hornton Blues Festival has been moved to Saturday, August 25, Bank Holiday Monday looked a bit empty - till Jane and Simon Perkin stepped in.

They’ve arranged a special Bank Holiday Walk which is starting from the village green at 10am and will go to the National Herb Centre at Warmington.

“People should meet on the green from 9.50am onwards,” said Simon. “The walk to the herb centre is really good and there are drinks, snack and light lunches available when we get there, so there’s no need to take anything to eat and drink.

“We’re hoping that as many Horntonians as possible will take part and that the bank Holiday Walk will become a firm favourite in the Hornton calendar.”

And don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for sale plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip!

1st August '07 - A-Tent-Shun

Hornton needs YOU to make the village barn dance go with a swing - by helping to erect the old army tent in which it will be held.

The dance is taking place a fortnight on Saturday, August 18, but you also need to put the days before and after in your diaries if you possibly can, says pavilion committee member Chris Woodcock.

"The tent will give the dance a great atmosphere but it needs about a dozen people to erect it," she explained. "We need volunteers to help put it up at 6pm on Friday, August 17 and then take it down at noon on the Sunday.

"It is really a case of the more the merrier as it's big and heavy and needs a person on every pole!

"We are hoping for a really good fund-raiser for Pavilion refurbishment expenditure, so we also need as many people to come along as possible. Sarah Walther is going to produce tickets, so if we can sell some in advance that'll help. Please contact here on 01295 670627 or a committee member if you would like to arrange for a group to come along.

"We will obviously also still sell tickets on the door/flap for £5 if you're over 11, half price for children."

And if you can help do a stint on the BBQ at some point, please contact Chris on 01295 670795. As ever, prizes for the traditional Hornton raffle would be most gratefully received too.

"Hopefully it'll be a great evening," added Chris. "We've live music from the Shenlow Rakes, and a vintage WWII tent to dance the night away in - and all for just a fiver!"
