This Saturday’s Summer Blues Cruise in Hornton is going to feature the biggest ever line-up of bands in tribute to Ivor Shawyer, in whose memory the event
is held and who would have been 60 this weekend.
Ivor died in 1997 but Johnny Come Lately, Nevermynd, The Sideshow Bobs, Chuckletruck and The Drunken Poets all want to remember him and will be entertaining fans at the Dun
Cow before The Firebirds - Ivor’s own group and led by Hornton’s Mark Bowes - bring the Cruise to a finale.
“Festival goers are encouraged to arrive by 12.30pm because, with this number of bands, we will start 1pm prompt with first act,” says Mark. “It costs just £5 to get in
and, as all the bands play for free, all the proceeds go to village charities.”

12th August 2010 - Under the Hammer
The portion of land next to the allotments which is being sold by the John Fox charity is going to be auctioned next month, with the proceeds being used by Hornton School.
The trustees wanted to sell the land locally in a private sale – as they did when they sold the allotments to the parish council – but the Charity Commission have insisted on a
public auction as the most effective and transparent way of disposing of it.
The auctioneers will be Fisher German on 01295 271555 and a prospectus is being prepared.
12th August 2010 - Sweet 60
It will be a sweet – or perhaps bittersweet – occasion when Hornton’s annual music festival takes places this year on Bank Holiday Saturday, August 28. The Firebirds once
again host the event at the Dun Cow in aid of village good causes and it takes place on what would have been the 60th birthday of band founder member Ivor Sawyer.
He died some years ago but the band say he would have been delighted that the event is still going strong. It’s a great afternoon out, so rock on down!

spoil things.

5th August 2010 - Going for Gold
Richard Pratt won the ever-popular Golden Mile - held on July 25 to raise money for Jumpa - in five minutes 48 seconds. Alex Cox was the first you person home in six
minutes 14 and Jane Perkin the first lady in seven minutes six seconds.
5th August 2010 - Home Sweet Home
Planning permission has finally been granted for Hornton’s affordable housing. The scheme still needs funding to be confirmed but parish councillors were told at their
latest meeting, on July 26, that this should be through by the end of the month.
The plans for homes on the pavilion car park received overwhelming backing from villagers in a public consultation.
And the Parish council will soon be the proud owners of the allotments. A sale price has been agreed with the John Fox charity of £13,250 – a compromise between the two
valuations received.
Councillors unanimously agreed to subsidise three months usage of the Dial-a-Ride Service again this year, from August to October. And parish councillors heard that local
MP Tony Baldry has lobbied Oxfordshire to provide a Dial-a-Ride service from next year, when it takes it over from Cherwell.
But from November, car-less villagers should not need to use Dial-a-Ride to buy their groceries. Becci’s Mobile Shop will be visiting villages in Oxfordshire, selling local
goods as well as major brands. This will be run on a weekly schedule so that each village will have the same visiting hours of 30 to 45 minutes each week. The Parish
Council is asked to consider a suggested time and convenient site.
And the village should be less isolated in bad weather in future, thanks to an initiative by Oxfordshire. The council is encouraging villages to seek the help of local
farmers to clear at least one road through to a main A road when there is snow and ice and may provide salt/grit to be stored by a farmer for this use. Roy Tew has said
that he would be happy to help clear Quarry Road.
Meanwhile, councillors were told that noise from a rave being held at Fir Tree Farm in Warmington was so loud that Hornton residents heard it. complaints about noise
from raves being held at Fir Tree. The Clerk of Shotteswell Parish Council had asked Hornton to join them in complaining to Stratford District Council and an email has
been sent to Stratford DC accordingly.
5th August 2010 - Church Services
There will be a celebration of Holy Eucharist in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist this Sunday, August 8, at 11 am. As this is a United Service,
there will be no service in the Methodist Church.
