It was a brilliant effort! In the space of a few days, Hornton rallied round and organised a soup lunch last Saturday to
raise money for the people of Haiti.
It was so popular that two of the four home-made soups “sold out” by half way through lunchtime and a delighted Sarah
Walther, one of the organisers, said £800 has been raised.
“And the money’s still coming in,” says Sarah. “We want to send a huge thank you to all who came from Hornton, Horley and
Shottswell for the lunch.
“We’d also like to that everyone who helped, gave donations to the bring’n’buy stall and the raffle.”

or visiting www.justgiving.com/BH3-Hash-the-Wall Ian is hoping they
will raise £5000.
28th January 2010 - Here for the Beer
Hornton’s Simon Perkin has a plan to make sure you earn your pint on Sunday week, February 7!
That’s the weekend of the Dun Cow’s Winter Beer Festival and Simon is planning a village walk, starting from the green over
to the National Herb Centre in Warmington and back.
“We’ll start off at 1.30pm to the Herb Centre for quick drink and the idea would be that we would all return to the pub for
about 4.15pm and attempt to finish off the barrels and have some fun,” he said. “It will all be very informal but already a
number of people have expressed and interest.”
If you’d like more details, please ring Simon on 01295 670701.
But you won’t have to wait till Sunday to sample those tempting ales. The festival starts on Friday week, February 5, and
runs all weekend.
As usual the theme of the festival is being kept a closely-guarded secret by licensees Gwyneth and Martin Gelling but the
names of the beers will all have something in common.
As well as a tempting range of Winter ales to sample, there will also be plenty of hearty fare for customers to nibble, so
pop down and imbibe!

7th January 2010 - Oxfordshire Safeguarding Adults Article
Abuse is treating a person in a way that makes them feel frightened or unhappy, harms, hurts or exploits them. It can happen
anywhere.
Joan
Joan is 82 and lives on her own.
Last week two men visited her and said that because of the recent frost the path to her door needed repairing and that if
she didn’t get it done she could be sued. Joan was frightened and agreed that she would withdraw £1000 and that they would
come back the next day and repair the path.
Fortunately her neighbour, Val, had seen the men and was worried. Val went round to see Joan who told her what had happened.
Together they contacted the Oxfordshire Trading Standards Team who were able to intervene and safeguard Joan.
Some adults are particularly vulnerable to being hurt or abused because they have a disability, illness, or impairment and
need help and support.
Bill
Bill has a learning disability. He gets the bus into town where he has a part-time job. At the bus stop he is often bullied
and called names by students from a local school.
The bus driver was very concerned about Bill and contacted Oxfordshire Social & Community Services.
A worker from social services helped Bill. Initially they were able to change Bill’s work times so that he could get a
different bus. They also spent some time at the school and were able to work with the young people involved who apologised
for what they had done.
Bill felt much better as he had been able to deal with the problem.
Abuse is not always deliberate. It sometimes happens that people are trying to do their best but feel stressed
Margaret & John
Margaret and John are both in their 90’s. Amy, their daughter, looks after them. It’s hard work. Amy has to get up most
nights because her father is incontinent. One day after a particularly bad night Margaret hits out at Amy while Amy is
trying to bath her. It’s the last straw for Amy and she slaps her mother back.
Amy is distraught. She loves her parents dearly but feels she can’t carry on.
Amy contacts her local carers’ centre who help her by supporting her to get help in caring for her parents, getting time
for herself and introducing her to other carers like herself.

7th January 2010 - Great response to food recycling
Cherwell’s new food waste recycling scheme has proven very popular with the residents of Hornton.
The scheme, launched in October, has already diverted 32 per cent of cooked and uncooked food from the village’s green bins.
And once everyone becomes accustomed to putting their food waste in the brown bin, this figure will rise.
Cherwell’s portfolio holder for environment, recreation and health, Councillor George Reynolds, said: “It is surprising just
how much food we throw away, even those of us with a frugal nature.
“There are many items which can now go in the brown bin including bones, plate scrapings and shells, it’s just a matter of
getting used to the change.
“I would ask everyone to stop and think for a second before they throw anything away – 'could I avoid some of that going to
landfill?'
"Not only will this be better for the environment but recycling food waste costs about half as much as paying landfill
taxes.”
Each home in the village should have received a kitchen caddy – a container to store food waste before transferring it from
the kitchen to the brown bin.
They came with a complimentary roll of compostable liners which can also go in with the food and garden waste.
These should not be substituted with plastic liners but they are not essential; the caddy can be lined with newspaper -
which can also go in the brown bin - or be left unlined.
Those wishing to buy some more liners can pick them up at all the major supermarkets in Banbury and The Bridge Store,
Cropredy.
