Hornton will be a pretty lively - and slightly noisy - place this weekend.
The third Annual Hornton Summer Beer Festival at the Dun Cow should attract hundreds of real ale fans from all over the
county and beyond if the success of the last two years is anything to go by.
The fun kicks off at 7pm tomorrow night, Friday, and goes on throughout the weekend - or as long as the 14 real ales and
range of draught ciders last! Food will also be available all over the festival.
Even more people will be in the village on Saturday evening. John and Lorna Abbott celebrate the wedding of their
daughter, Martha, in their garden at New Poplars, at the top of Millers Lane. Meanwhile, Roger and Lynn Corke hold a
birthday party at their cottage in Church Lane. Roger and Lynn promise to try to be less noisy than last year!

Julie Stanley and Ann Hemmings need your copy by this Sunday, July 31st.

So please contact Julie on 01295 670507 or Ann on 01295 670511 as soon as possible.
27th July '05 - Long Walk for Hornton
Jean Burden, Lynne Miles and Sarah Walther have raised more than £1500 for Breast Cancer Care is a series of fund-raising
events, culminating in a 26-mile rain-soaked walk to Blenheim Palace. Well done!
27th July '05 - Short Walk to Hornton
Do you know where to find Begger Bosh Hill, Clump Ground, Tatlers Leys and Bath Meadow? Well they’re all fields within a
mile of Hornton and they all feature on a circular walk around Hornton and Horley.
It’s called the Horley Circular Walk and Village Trail but don’t let the title put you off, Horntonians! Promoted by
Cherwell, the four-mile stroll takes you from Horley to Hornton and by or through all those fields with ancient names.
On the Cherwell website at www.cherwell-dc.gov.uk/leisure/circularwalks.cfm, you can find details of the wildlife and
nature you’ll see on the way, historic buildings and all sorts of other interesting facts. Did you know that was a
Roman vineyard in Horley?
On the website, there are also other village trails to explore - with details of all the local pubs to visit for a
well-earned pint after that stroll round the trail.
19th July '05 - GoodBye, Harold
The village of Hornton has lost one of its great characters - Harold Burden.
Harold died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He lived almost all of his 79 years in the village and for the past 52 years in Millers Lane.
When he was interviewed for the village’s millennium film he revealed - with a touch of pride - that he had never been to London, for Harold was a
Horntonian through and through. The packed church for his funeral was testimony to that fact.
Harold worked as a builder for most of his life and many houses in and around Hornton bear the marks of his outstanding workmanship. He was noted for his
dry wit, his love of all pub games - he was a key member of the Dun Cow crib team - and snooker. He also made probably the best strawberry wine in the
world.
19th July '05 - Get Energised
Children from Hornton who have energy to spare need to pop along to the Energise Sports Roadshow at Horley Cricket Club next week. It
will be there from 10am to midday every Friday from July 29th to August 26th. It’s all about fun and games with relays, parachute games, football, rounders
and cricket just some of the attractions on offer. It costs just £3-50 for two hours and there’s no need to book – just turn up and play. More
information can be obtained by ringing 01295 221719.
19th July '05 - Inspector Puts Spoke in Cycle Track Plan
Plans for a cycle track on land off Quarry Road have been turned down by a planning inspector after an appeal.
The inspector believes that the site is far from ideal for the scale of events that have taken place. He considers that screening the view and noise
and reducing the number of events would be difficult to enforce and would do little to reduce the impact.
H A Hart & Sons appealed to the Inspector after Cherwell District Council refused planning permission for the site. A revised planning application has
also been turned down by the council.
The decision will be on the agenda of Hornton Parish Council at their meeting next Monday, July 25th, at 7.30pm in the Church Room. Parish councillors
had been in favour of a cycle track on the site but against the larger facility which was planned and especially against a new tannoy system which they
believed caused too much disturbance.
Everyone is invited to attend next Monday’s parish council meeting and members of the public may be invited to speak at the chairman’s discretion.
19th July '05 - Fir and Feather
Fifteen members of Hornton Youth Club had a chance to see birds of prey close up when they visited the Fir Tree Falconry at Warmington
recently.
They saw three birds of prey flying – a kestrel, a peregrine falcon and a barn owl. Owner Keith Jones made sure that all of the children had the
opportunity to hold at least one of the birds, including the largest resident at the falconry, Millie the Eagle Owl. The evening was rounded off with
a BBQ.
Youth Club leaders Ian Harris and Les England said that, as well as being
an enjoyable evening, there was a valuable educational content giving the
children a better understanding of the need to protect our wildlife.
The 3Hs Gardening Club also spent an enjoyable Owl Evening at the Falconry on Tuesday of last week.
19th July '05 - Time's Pressing
The press deadline for the latest edition of The Gossip, Hornton's very own village newspaper, is nearly up. Editors Julie Stanley
and Ann Hemmings need your copy by Sunday, July 31st.
Just about anything legal, decent honest and truthful can make it into The Gossip, just as long as it's signed and it's about Hornton.
So please contact Julie on 01295 670507 or Ann on 01295 670511 with your recollections, recipes and reminiscences as soon as possible.
19th July '05 - Back in the Bottle
The Dun Cow’s wine tasting evening this weekend has had to be postponed until September because of staff shortages at Banbury wine
merchants S and H Jones, who were to stage the event.
19th July '05 - Out of the Barrel
But preparations for the Hornton pub’s third annual Summer Beer Festival are well under way.
Hundreds of real ale enthusiasts from all over the county and beyond are expected for the event, which starts at 7pm on Friday, July 29th, and continues
either to the Sunday evening or earlier if the beers and ciders run out.
But since there will be a minimum of 12 different beers to sample in the garden marquee - with food available throughout the weekend – there should be a
pint or two for everyone.
19th July '05 - 137 for Six
An impressive field of 137 runners took part in the annual Hornton Six race last Saturday, with Duncan Dawes the first village runner across
the six-mile finish line at 42 mins 9 seconds. Simon Perkin came in just behind at 44 mins 45 seconds and Ollie Fickling at 47 mins 12 seconds. But they
were some way behind V. Zverev from Headington, who won in 33 minutes 24 seconds.
“It was a fantastic evening,” said Simon. “The weather was great and we topped off the race with a BBQ.
“Anyone is welcome to take part for next year’s race, so now’s the time to put those running shoes on and get into shape!”
19th July '05 - Air Cover
Three of Hornton’s most beautiful gardens raised £260 when their owners opened them in aid of the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance
Trust.
The trust relies completely upon donations to keep the air ambulance going and it was really grateful to Audrey and Eric Turner, Linda and Malcolm Cross
and Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir for arranging the event.
“It was a really good effort, considering we only charged £3 and that there were several other gardens open in the area on the same day,” said Lady
Tweedsmuir. “The trust was very pleased.”
The village’s pavilion extension fund is also better off to the tune of £80 from the sale of teas.

After the race - which is on a six-mile route out through Bell Street via Wroxton Heath and back via Horley - there will

11th July '05 - A Cheeky Little Number
On Saturday week, the Dun Cow will host a tutored wine tasting under the sophisticated nose of Banbury wine merchants S
and H Jones.

Then it will be time for hundreds of real ale enthusiasts to slurp their way through the third annual Hornton summer beer
festival, scheduled for the weekend of July 29rd to 31st.
A tantalising array of at least twelve real ales and some draught ciders will be available for sampling and the fans -
who will descend from all over Oxfordshire and beyond if the last two years are anything to go by - will not be
disappointed.
Food will be available all through the weekend.

Upton’s Kitchen Display Garden, then transfer to a cookery workshop using the produce to create mouth-watering dishes
under the expert supervision of Upton’s chefs.

there will be a service at the Methodist Church.
5th July '05 - Not by Halves
Cherwell Runners and Joggers don’t do things by halves - unless it’s half a dozen miles round Hornton!
On Saturday week, July 16, they’re holding their annual Hornton Six race, starting off from the pavilion at 7pm. You don’t
have to be a member of the club to take part - and you certainly don’t have to be a good runner! You just need bags of
enthusiasm - anyone can do it!
You can get more details from the club on 01295 272353 or just turn up at the pavilion on the night in your running shoes.
Afterwards, there’s a bring-your-own BBQ at the pavilion.
5th July '05 - Jump to it, you lot
It was a barn dance with a difference. It had the music, the dancing and the real ale.
But it didn’t take place in a barn. It was inside a khaki ex-army mess tent erected next to Hornton pavilion and the
novel location was perfect.
Hornton and Horley’s finest country dancers strutted their stuff to local favourites Lazarus all night and the event -
the weekend before last - made more than £200 for JUMPA, Hornton and Horley's Jubilee fund for
a multi-purpose play area.
JUMPA’s Chris Woodcock paid tribute to everyone who had helped.
“It was a lot of hard work but everyone had a great time dancing to Lazarus, with Hornton’s Ian Harris on drums,” she
said. “We need to give a big thank you to them and also to the tent team, headed up by Ollie Fickling with Mark Wright's
able support, and all the many others who worked so hard to make it a good night - from providing straw bales and raffle
prizes to cooking on the BBQ and knocking in tent pegs.
“Thanks also to Helena, Ollie's sister-in-law, who kindly lent the tent, which was a 1945-1971 veteran, according to the
dates on separate panels!”
In the meantime, JUMPA has released final results from its money-spinning Golden Mile on June 19th.
“We had 71 walkers and runners,” said JUMPA’s Ollie Fickling. “The fastest man was Duncan Dawes
in five minutes 15 seconds and the fastest woman was Jess Wain in six minutes 25 seconds.
“The fastest boy under 16 was Jamie Abbots at six minutes 36 seconds but Jenna Naysmith was faster in the under 16 category at six
minutes 23 seconds. Jenna ran faster than any other girl or woman and faster than any boy.
“Alex Cox, who is under 10, ran an incredible 6 minutes 42 seconds.”
JUMPA hopes to raise approximately £500 from the Golden Mile, which will help keep the play area going once it is built.
Thanks to the hard fundraising work and several key grants, it has now got the £40,000 it needs to build the project but
will keep raising a small amount of money each year for running costs.
5th July '05 - Tantalise Those Tastebuds
Whether it’s fine wine or real ale which takes your fancy, the Dun Cow has both in abundance over the next few weeks.
On Saturday, July 23rd, Banbury wine merchants S and H Jones will run a tutored tasting - hopefully in the pub garden. The
event will start at 7pm and more details can be obtained from Martin and Gwyneth on 01295 670524.
On the following weekend, from July 29th to 31st, it will be time for real ale fans to descend on the pub for its third
annual beer festival. Good beer has really become the trademark of the pub - so much so that it’s now in the Good Beer
Guide - and hundreds of real ale enthusiasts will be descending on Hornton from all over Oxfordshire and beyond.
If previous festivals are anything to go by, there will be a fantastic range of beers on offer. At least twelve real ales
and some draught ciders for sampling are promised and food will also be available.
5th July '05 - Bear Facts

the gardens, a prize for best-dressed bear and a Bear Parade on the south lawn. Normal admission prices apply.
