Nathan Holmes won the annual Hornton Six race last
Saturday with a time of 33 minutes 1 second. The first female runner to
cross the line was Adrienne Hopkins in 43.47.
Simon Perkin was the first Hornton resident home in 51st place with a time
of 43.49, closely followed by Pete Whitehead in 44.56. Jane Perkin made it
round in 49.28.
26th July '07 - It Rains a lot at Camelot
On Friday the weather threw down the Gauntlet
and the Dun Cow needed some of Merlin’s Magic to save the Hornton Beer
Festival from becoming a disaster. During the day the car park was under
water and in the evening just two people were daft enough to travel from
outside the village to the big beer tent in the pub garden.
But on Saturday there were lots of punters and relieved Dun Cow licensee
Martin Gelling had sold more than half the specially-chosen beers, which
this year had a Camelot theme.
There really was a beer called Gauntlet - and another called Merlin’s
Magic. Your correspondent’s favourite was a 5.1 per cent brew called King,
and White Lady and Tournament were also very popular.
There are only a couple of hundred “hopping” days to the next festival -
an event featuring winter beers which will take place in the New Year!
26th July '07 - Tent Event
Hornton’s next Big Tent Event is the barn dance being held on
Saturday, August 18.
There will be bags of atmosphere because the dance, run in aid of pavilion
funds, will be held inside an old army tent, so put that date in your
diaries now!
26th July '07 - Hornton Hits a High Note
“It was out of this world!”
That was the verdict from Hornton headteacher Hilary Childs after the
school’s triumphant Summer concert in a packed Horley Parish Church last
week.
Every child in the school had a part to play and the event was what Mrs
Childs hopes to be the first of many school events taking place outside
the village. When she became headteacher earlier this year, she vowed to
arrange more school events in the other villages which Hornton School
serves - in particular, Horley and Hanwell.
And she paid tribute to many of the school’s parents, who arranged the
chairs and looked after the catering.
26th July '07 - Scene on the Green
Sunday’s annual Neighbourhood Watch Party on Hornton
village green was more successful than ever - because it didn’t rain!
Organiser Jenny Bowes had feared the worst after a weekend which had seen
one house in Hornton flooded but by Sunday afternoon the sun was well and
truly out so new Hornton residents had a chance to meet their neighbours
and a good time was had by all.
26th July '07 - Heydays and Holidays
Upton House is planning a series of events in its
House Heydays season over the holiday period.
If jazz is your thing, pack a picnic, your dancing shoes and pop up to
Upton’s beautiful grounds this Saturday, July 28.
The gates open at 6.30, the music starts an hour later and tickets are
just £12.50 each.
The next House Heydays event is on Sunday, August 19, when Upton will
return to the roaring 20s for a day of period events, including costumed
characters, period games, family trails, vintage cars, jazz bands and more
from midday to 4pm.
If the kids are bored during the summer holidays, take them up to Upton
for Fun Fridays - every Friday in August from midday to 4pm. There'll be
loads of hands-on activities for all ages.
And on Saturday week, August 4, you can Take Part in Art. Be inspired by
Upton's history and collections and discover the artist within you in a
series of family art activities including plate painting and shell
box-making - plus free art tours in the house from midday till 4pm.
You can get more information on all these events from Upton on 01295
670266 or by email on uptonhouse (at) nationaltrust.org.uk. Bookings can be
made on 01295 671121.
26th July '07 - Church Services
There will be an 11 o’clock service in Hornton Methodist
Church this Sunday, July 29. There is no service in the parish church
because there is a Benefice Eucharist at St Mary Magdalene in Balscote at
10-30 am.
Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the
Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are
Phoenix greetings cards for sale plus a book and video swap - and, of
course, lots of good gossip!
19th July '07 - Hornton Hits a High Note
Hornton School’s summer concert takes place at
7pm tonight, Thursday, in Horley Church. There will be a feast of musical
treats performed by the children and everyone is welcome.
Next Tuesday is the last day of term and the new school year begins on
Wednesday, September 5.
19th July '07 - Here for the Beer
Dun Cow licensees Gwyneth and Martin Gelling are
gearing up for their ever-popular annual Hornton Summer Beer festival,
taking place this weekend.
As usual, there will be a theme for the tempting array of beers on offer -
but it will be a closely-guarded secret until the festival kicks off
tomorrow, Friday, at 6pm.
The festival will go on until closing time on Sunday - unless the beer in
the festival tent runs out first! But Gwyneth is optimistic that won’t
quite happen.
“We haven't totally run out at a festival yet!” she said.
19th July '07 - Sizzling Six
Bring along your shorts, shoes, sausages and steaks this
Saturday, July 21, when Hornton once again hosts the annual Hornton
Classic Six mile road race.
The race begins at 7pm and there’s a BBQ afterwards to which you can bring
your own food.
All villagers are welcome to try this scenic, challenging and undulating
course! Enter on the day by 6.30pm or contact Cherwell Runners and Joggers
on 01295 252275 for more details.
19th July '07 - Watch This Space
The space in question - Hornton village green. The time
- 6pm this Sunday, July 22. The occasion - the Hornton Neighbourhood Watch
Annual Party!
There will be hot dogs, wine, nibbles, the inevitable Hornton raffle and
lots of music.
All you need to do is to set your burglar alarm, lock the front door and
come down for some great food, wine and company!
19th July '07 - Sunny Success
The sixth annual Hornton Bike Ride on Sunday was one of the
most successful ever - because it didn’t rain!
A total of 15 cyclists took part - slightly down on previous years, partly
because the Meteorological Office had issued a severe weather warning for
Sunday. But in the end the riders escaped the rain altogether, apart from
a few spots which fell when they were joined by friends and family at The
Plough at Bodicote for a pub lunch.
Then it was back to Hornton for tea and cakes and the rain only came down
after the last cup was drunk!
Organiser Lynn Corke said, “Thanks must go to Isabel Harris and Jane
Perkin for organising the teas and to all those who contributed cakes.
“We rode 21.3 miles, which was a great achievement - especially for Tom
Donaldson, who was the youngest cyclist to complete the course
unassisted.”
19th July '07 - We Won't Get Wet!
Glastonbury-style galoshes won’t be necessary at
Hornton’s very own music festival this year - at least for the musicians -
because for the first time they will be under cover.
And that’s not the only change to the renowned Summer Blues Cruise
because, for the first time in 24 years, it’s going to take place on the
Saturday of the Summer Bank Holiday - August 25 - instead of the Monday.
Festival organiser Mark Bowes, of The Mighty Firebirds, said the main
reason for the change was to allow the bands to play for longer - from 2pm
to 7.30pm this year.
“It also gives festival bands and revellers chance to recover before their
return to work!” he added.
“This year once again promises to be a real cracker, as we will be
celebrating the life of Firebirds guitarist Ivor Shawyer who will have
been gone for 10years this year. And for the first time ever we will no
longer be “weather permitting” as we will have a covered stage. All the
fans need to do is to turn up and bring appropriate clothing.
“As always, there will be fantastic real ales on hand plus a BBQ and ice
creams.”
Anyone wishing to run any other stalls will be welcome but they must book
with Mark in advance on 01295 670633 and make an agreed donation to
Hornton village funds.
Tickets for the event itself are just £5 each - with children under 12
free - and all profits will go to village funds.
Acts confirmed so far are The Mighty Firebirds, Deep Purple cover band
Taste of Purple, Caravan of Whores and Jake Jacobs.
19th July '07 - Home on the Grange
The 3Hs Gardening Club managed to avoid the rain to
enjoy the magnificent walled garden at Broughton Grange in all its glory
last week. The club’s next event is their Flower and Vegetable Show on
Saturday, August 18.
19th July '07 - All that Jazz
If jazz is your thing, pack a picnic, your dancing shoes
and pop up to Upton House on Saturday week, July 28.
The gates open at 6.30, the music starts an hour later and tickets are
just £12.50 each.
If the kids are bored during the summer holidays, take them up to Upton
for Fun Fridays - every Friday in August from midday to 4pm. There’ll be
loads of hands-on activities for all ages.
And on Saturday week, August 4, you can Take Part in Art. Be inspired by
Upton’s history and collections and discover the artist within you in a
series of family art activities including plate painting and shell
box-making - plus free art tours in the house from midday till 4pm.
You can get more information on all these events from Upton on 01295
670266 or by email on uptonhouse@nationaltrust.org.uk. Bookings can be
made on 01295 671121.
19th July '07 - Book In
The mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council will be on
the village green next Wednesday, July 25, from 10.40 to 11.20am.
19th July '07 - Godhead to Godhead
There will be an 11am service at Hornton Methodist
Church this Sunday, July 22, the same time at Holy Eucharist will be
celebrated at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.
Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the
Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are
Phoenix greetings cards for sale plus a book and video swap - and, of
course, lots of good gossip! And Thursday Club meets every week after
school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All children are
welcome.
12th July '07 - We Plough through Fields and Natter
The Tour de France may be new to London but Hornton’s had it’s very own festival of cycling for ages and it’s taking place this Sunday, July 15. Yes, it’s time to pump up those tyres in time for the Hornton Annual Leisure Cycle Ride but don’t worry about getting in any practice because the focus is on fun and food rather than fast times.
This year, the bike ride will be stopping at The Plough in Bodicote for a pub lunch - where walkers and motorists can join the cyclists - before cycling back to The Cottage in Church Lane for tea and cakes at the end of the afternoon, with all cake contributions especially welcome. The long-range weather forecast is good so why not give it a try, especially if you haven’t come before!
Bike Ride organiser Lynn Corke says that you can just come along to leave the village green on Sunday morning at 11am but if you know in advance that you’ll be turning up, please call her on 01295 670673.
“It’s much easier for the pub if we can give some estimate of how many people are going to descend on them!” says Lynn. “I don’t need a cast-iron guarantee but if you are interested in coming, please get in touch.
“Once again, we’re planning a nice, easy cycle ride over a gentle route, so don’t feel you have to be super-fit! If the ground has dried out from all this rain, then we’ll be able to go across country. Otherwise, we can go along some quiet country lanes.
“So do come along if you can. It will be a great day.”
12th July '07 - Water on the Brain
If you know which idiot deliberately tried to flood Hornton Pavilion last week, please let someone on the committee know.
Chairman Ian Harris said the culprit went into the pavilion, left the tap running in the sink, bolted the door and climbed out through the window.
“Fortunately the damage was averted,” said Ian. “But there must have been considerable waste of water and the cost of this will be reflected in the Pavilion water bill. I have put up notices asking for anyone with information to speak to a committee member or please send me a note - anonymously if you wish.”
Alternatively, please ring Ian on 01295 670 541.

Dun Cow licensees Gwyneth and Martin Gelling are gearing up for their ever-popular annual Hornton Summer Beer festival, which this year is taking place on Friday week.

The festival will go on until closing time on the following Sunday - unless the beer in the festival tent runs out first! But Gwyneth is optimistic that won’t quite happen.
“We haven't totally run out at a festival yet!” she said.
