29th July '09 - Just a Minute
As the holidays begin, now’s the time to be thinking of making a short film for the autumn’s Hornton Film Festival. Are you
worried that it would take too much time? Now there’s no excuse.
This year’s festival take place on Saturday October 3 with the usual Gala Screening at the Hornton Pavilion and organiser
Pete Whitehead has come up with a special new film category - the One Minute Wonder.
“This is a film exactly sixty seconds long,” says Pete. “It can be in any theme or style of your choosing: a documentary,
an animation, fact, fiction, comedy, tragedy, a video or just a series of still images with a sound track or voice-over. If
you have the idea, there is certainly a medium in which it can be expressed.”
Pete is also keen for longer films - anything up to five minutes - on any subject under the sun.
“We have had four Film Festivals so far with over 50 movies, almost all of which were conceived, directed and produced by
residents of Hornton,” he said. “The standard of films has been amazing and the Gala Screenings are a must do Hornton event.”
The village has its own video camera and editing equipment - plus lots of technical expertise for anyone who would like to
make a film but is not sure where to start. Just give Pete a ring on 01295 670320 or email him on

23rd July '09 - Beanz Meanz Starz
There’s been a fantastic response to the appeal for
Horntonians to take part in next year’s pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.
The get-together in the pavilion for budding actors, producers, musical
directors, make-up artists, stage managers - you name it, the panto will need it
- resulted in director Anne Joyner in being able to cast most of the entire
production.
But Anne says there is plenty of room - and lots of tasks - left for people
either wanting to tread the boards of work backstage.
“We’re aiming to do four shows during the February Half Term next year and
rehearsals would start seriously in September. The money raised, minus expenses,
will go towards the Pavilion restoration.”
If you’re interested but weren’t able to come to the meeting, please give Anne a
ring on 01295 670337.
23rd July '09 - Going for Gold
Hornton’s rain-lashed Golden Mile was won by John Naysmith on
Sunday in a time of six minutes and 17 seconds. The first lady home was Sophie
Keene in 7’31” and the first youngster home was Alex Cox in 6’24”.
But the real winner was Jumpa, with £70 raised. And if anyone would like to add
to that figure to maintain the playing area for the next year, the organisers
would be delighted. Please contact Chris Woodcock on 01295 670795.
The day before, Nigel Marley from Coventry Godivas won the Hornton Six in a time
of 33’9”. The first lady home was Sarah Raddel from Alcester in 40’22” and Justin
Stanley was the first Horntonian home in 43’3”.
23rd July '09 - Pouring Pints
The rain poured over Hornton’s annual Summer beer festival last
weekend but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the real ale enthusiasts who
turned up at the Dun Cow to taste a superb range of bitter, porters, ciders and
perries.
This year’s festival was called Pint Sized Britain and all the beers had a place
name in their title. The next festival is the pub’s winter beer festival in
February of next year.
23rd July '09 - Moveable Feast
The last Hornton Progressive Dinner Party was the most successive
ever, so if you weren’t able to take part, put Saturday, October 17, in your
diaries now! That’s the date of the next one and the organisers are hoping to
raise even more than the £700 for the Pavilion that they raised last time.
23rd July '09 - Come to the Council
The next meeting of Hornton Parish Council is on Monday July
27, in the pavilion at 7.30pm. All members of the public are invited.

Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There is a book, DVD and
video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip!
16th July '09 - Run and Run
There’s no excuse for not putting your best foot forward this
weekend, with two very different running events taking place in Hornton
First up is the traditional highlight of the village’s serious running calendar,
the Hornton Six, which takes place this Saturday, July 18. A donation will be
made to the Katharine House Hospice for every entry and you can either register
by going online at www.cherwellrunning.co.uk or by just turning up at Hornton
Pavilion before 7pm when the race is due to start.
But if you’re not quite so serious about your running, you’ll want to enter the
ever-popular Golden Mile which takes place on Sunday. Due to those tedious
party-poopers, Elf’n’Safety, it’s been moved off the public road to a new route
just off Horley Road opposite Gibbs’ blacksmiths. But the usual crop of baby
buggies, dog walkers and three-legged entrants will be welcome, along with
slightly more serious contestants.
It’s all in aid of Jumpa and you can either give a donation on the day or get
sponsorship forms in advance from Mark Wright on 01295 730530 or Lynne Fickling
on 01295 670739.
16th July '09 - Trotterlong
After all that running, it’ll be time to pop down to the Dun Cow
next weekend for the fifth annual Hornton Summer Beer Festival, which kicks off
with a pig roast tomorrow, Friday.
A tempting array of real ales will be on offer for the connoisseur and, as usual,
the festival has a theme but landlady Gwyneth Gelling is keeping it a secret
until the festival opens.
“A wide range of beers are already in the cellar and chilling nicely,” says
Gwyneth. “The ciders are also organised and nearly ready to go. All we need now
is some reasonable weather - and people to drink it all.”
