The final tally has now been totted up for JUMPA’s Golden Mile on June 1. Fifty runners - including four dogs! - helped raise more
than £500 for Hornton and Horley’s fund for the Jubilee multi-purpose playing area, both from individual runners’ sponsorship and a BBQ at the Dun Cow
pub afterwards.
27th June '03 - Still some space left on the Beach
It’s not too late to get tickets for this Saturday’s Beach Party in aid of JUMPA. The Hornton Pavilion in Bell Street will transformed
into “Bell-Street-by-the-Sea” for the evening of disco and BBQ, so give those Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts an airing!
27th June '03 - Church Services
There is an 11am service at the Methodist Church, Miller‘s Lane, this Sunday. At the same time, the Parish Church will celebrate Holy Eucharist for their
Patronal Festival - the feast day of their own Saint, St John the Baptist.
26th June '03 - Come and Meet the Neighbours!
The annual Neighbourhood Watch Party will take place on Sunday, July 6 between 6 and 8pm on the village green (or in the pavilion if it’s wet). There will be
wine, a raffle, music and nibbles, so don‘t be shy. Don’t just watch your neighbours, meet them!
25th June '03 - Fond Memories and a Fun Time
People came from all over Britain and abroad last Saturday to turn Hornton Primary School’s Reunion into a
spectacular success. Head Teacher Mrs Wendy Clifford welcomed over 90 old pupils to the small village school from as far and wide as Wales, Birmingham,
High Wycombe, Leamington Spa, Rugby and Oxford, as well as from Banbury and the local villages. One pupil who attended, Jenny Franklin, now lives in
Florida, USA! Everyone had a very nostalgic time looking around their old school, reminiscing of times gone by but also seeing big changes since the days
when they sat in class. A governor and former pupil, Hornton Parish Cllr David Miles, told the visitors how the height of new technology was a gramophone
when he had been at the school. Now visitors were able to watch a slide show on the school’s new interactive computer whiteboard, making the primary
school one of the most advanced in information techology in Oxfordshire. There were photographs going back to the early part of the twentieth century and
former pupils were asked to help name anyone they knew in the pictures.
After a trip round the school it was time for a refreshing cup of afternoon tea and delicious cakes. There were also official photographs taken of the pupils of
each decade, plus the obligatory raffle (no Hornton event would be complete without one!). On behalf of all the older pupils who attended the reunion,
organiser Liz Jeffs would like to thank all the teachers and school governors for giving up their time to show people around the school and also say a
big thank you to all those who made cakes and served the tea. But everyone who went thought that special thanks needed to go to Liz herself for organising
a day to remember.
25th June '03 - Miss Deimelow Memorial
At the school reunion, plans were announced for a memorial to Miss PM Dimelow, who taught the youngest children at the school between 1950 and 1975 and died in
1998. Hornton resident Virginia Britton paid tribute to the superb professionalism of the woman who was never known around the village by her first name
- just “Miss Dimelow”. The plan is to put a stone in the churchyard to commemorate her and anyone who would like to contribute should send contributions
as soon as possible to the Miss Dimelow Memorial Fund, c/o Prentice House, Miller’s Lane, Hornton. OX15 6BS. Cheques should be made payable to V. Britton.
25th June '03 - Peach of an Evening
Local folk group Apricot Pie were on hand after the School Reunion to provide the music for the School Association BBQ and Barn Dance. Everyone had a
marvellous time, thanks in part to the weather, which was fine after lots of finger-crossing all week. This enabled all the events to take place on the football
field. The children enjoyed a bouncy castle, football, rounders, and spending lots of their parents’ money trying to win a "super soaker" water pistol on
the Tombola. That left the adults free for a drink of two from the bar and to eat well at the BBQ! Special thanks must go to Jon Cox and Kevin Wain who
slaved over a hot BBQ all evening. Afteerwards, it was hardly surprising that the dancing was a little slow to begin with, but with valiant efforts from
teacher Mrs Janet Porter, the audience were soon up on their feet making fools of themselves.
Thanks to everyone who bought tickets for the Grand Raffle, which was drawn during the evening, and in particular to the following local businesses
who donated prizes: Aerolight, Long Marston (a microlight flight); Paul Edmonds (a portrait); Liz Hirst (a beauty pamper day); Colegrave Seeds
(a hanging basket and pot); Achille Hair (a voucher); the Moon & Sixpence Pub (£25 voucher); the Avon Pub (Sunday lunch for two); the Wobbly Wheel
pub (a meal for two); Cargo (a set of garden lights); Paperways (two paint sets); the Gift Company (teddy bear); the Dun Cow Pub (wine);
S&H Jones (wine); Banbury Heating Supplies (£15 Argos Voucher); Tesco (£10 voucher); Allie Morgan (a month’s free gym membership);
McDonalds (meal vouchers).
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who came, lent and put up gazebos, helped out on the night and sold tickets. Plus very special thanks to the organiser
of the whole event, Jane Wain. A whopping total of £1,250.00 was raised towards school funds.
23rd June '03 - Gardens Open on Sunday
Ten of Hornton’s loveliest gardens will be open to the public this Sunday, June 29, from 2 to 6pm. There will be teas served and all proceeds will go to Methodist
Church Funds. Don’t miss it!
23rd June '03 - Gardens Trip on Saturday
The 3H’s Gardening Club are visiting historic Sudeley Castle this Saturday, June 28. The castle has famous roses, topiary and a
knot garden and, as the home of one of Henry VIII’s wives, Catherine Parr, also boasts a “Six Wives” exhibition. The coach will leave Hornton at 9.30am
and tickets are still available from Eileen Lewis on 01295 670449. The club will taking a trip to Rousham Gardens on Tuesday, July 8. Anyone wishing to come
should meet on the Hornton village green at 5.45pm. The cost is £3 per person.
For Hornton villagers the prospect of Broadband is as remote as ever. Demand is so low BT has set no activation threshold for our exchange. A typical
threshold is between 200 and 750 subscribers; that's subscribers not head of population. You want to know how many subscribers on our exchange have
registered their interest? 51! So we're a long way away. Can you wait? Broadband? More like Boredband.

20th June '03 - Church Services
There is a service at the Methodist Church this Sunday,
June 22, at 11am. There is no serviceat St John the Baptist Parish church
because there is a service for all eight churches in the Benefice at
Shenington at 10.30am
19th June '03 - JUMPA Beach Party
And there's still time to buy tickets for JUMPA's finale in its summer
programme - the Beach Party. Preparations are well underway to turn Hornton
Pavilion into the Copa Cabana Beach for the evening of Saturday, June 28.
There will be a disco, a BBQ and a riot of Hawaiin shirts! And as all
proceeds go to Hornton and Horley's Jubilee Multi-Purpose Play Area Fund,
there's just no excuse for being a party pooper! Chris Woodcock on 01295
670679 has those must-have tickets!
19th June '03 - Bend Zee Knees
New members are welcome to Hornton's very own yoga class,
which is held tonight and every Thursday night until July 24 at 7pm in the
Methodist Chapel, Miller's Lane. It only costs £4 per person for a
90-minute session, plus a 50p donation to the Chapel. Teacher Pam Monk, of
Banbury, plans a different sequence of stretching yoga movements each week,
with a relaxation session at the beginning and end of each class. Please
bring an exercise mat and wear loose, comfortable clothing. For more
details, call Chris Woodcock (who's very busy this week!) on 01295 670795.
19th June '03 - Through the Roof!
It's going to cost at least £3,600 to mend part of the
Pavilion roof and it would cost as much as £12,800 if it was completely
renovated. The Pavilion AGM/committee meeting on June 5, was told that
three contractors had inspected the roof to estimate the cost of replacing a
fibre cement section. Pavilion chairman Ian Harris pointed out that this
would need some funding even if grants were forthcoming and a further
estimate was being chased, which was required for Cherwell District Council
to consider with any grant application. However, it was agreed that a full
replacement was not necessary, nor affordable.
At the meeting, Sarah Walther was welcomed onto the committee and the other
members - Ian Harris, treasurer Lynne Fickling, Steve Woodcock, Liz & Bill
Jeffs, Ann Hemmings, Les England, David & Frank Jarrett, Eric Turner, David
Miles, John Offord, Mark Bowes, Mike Webber, Malcolm Cross and Paul Burden -
were all proposed and re- appointed.
Ian Harris advised that the kitchen extension would also require significant
fund raising, particularly with many other activities in the village also
effectively competing for people's time and money. It was agreed to have
sufficient funds raised and get accurate costings for the kitchen extension
at present was not feasible but that these should be prepared for next
spring.
He went on to give thanks to all those actively involved in running,
maintaining, repairing, cleaning and fund-raising, recognising the
significant contribution in particular made by the committee and the Horsley
family. He was pleased to report that the hall continues to be well used.
Bill Jeffs was thanked for arranging the checking of the fire extinguishers.
Ian also thanked everyone who had worked so hard to make Hornton's May Day
celebrations such a success. In other villages, traditional May Day
celebrations were becoming less common but Hornton's was thriving and
becoming better known outside the village.
Lynne Fickling reported that pavilion funds currently stood at £4347.18 in
the current account and £2,705.77 in the reserve account. Fundraising had
significantly increased, largely due to funds from JUMPA which were to be
transferred into a separate account. Lynne confirmed that any specific
costs relating to JUMPA would likewise be allocated to the JUMPA account.
She also advised that Tote monies were expected shortly.
Whilst letting income was slightly up on 2002, the costs of booking the hall
were now too low, as charges have not been raised since 2001. Therefore the
price for a disco/dance is to go up to £50 and for BBQs to £25, plus a hire
charge of £5 for the new BBQ (with a £10 deposit, refundable once the BBQ is
returned to its original condition). It was agreed to buy a new BBQ because
the old drum was in poor repair.
18th June '03 - Pelargoniums Prove a Big Hit
A very good turnout of Gardening Club members
made sure that the latest 3Hs trip was a big success. The visit, on June
10, was to see the national collection of pelargoniums at Fibrex Nurseries,
Pebworth, near Stratford-on-Avon. In spite of extensive directions, the
300-strong party succeeded in setting off in various different directions!
However, everyone finally made it to the glasshouses, where they saw an
incredible display of pelargoniums in all sorts of colours. The nursery - a
family business owned and operated by the Key family - also grows ferns,
ivys and helibores, so there was plenty of opportunity for everyone to have
a good shop afterwards!
There are also a few tickets left for the club's next trip, to Sudeley
Castle in Gloucestershire on June 28 - but do hurry! Sudeley was the home of
Henry's VIII's Queen, Catherine Parr, so as well as fine rose gardens, there
is a "Six Wives" exhibition. Tickets can be obtained from Eileen Lewis.
18th June '03 - Dad's Day Bowls 'em over!
Sunny weather ensured that Hornton's first Family
Fathers' Day, at Hornton Pavilion last Sunday, was very well attended and
great fun. Plenty of people tried the new skittle alley and then had a go
short mat bowls, before tucking into food from the BBQ, playing table tennis
and competing at egg throwing (won by Bill Jeffs and Glen Walther, who claim
to be the reigning champions!
17th June '03 - Old School Ties
It's a busy week for the school. More than 90 former
pupils are coming back from all over the country for a reunion this
Saturday, June 21 - so if you started your school days here, don't miss it!
The reminiscing kicks off at 3pm in the school playground. There will be a
chance to chat to old schoolfriends, meet the teachers, tour the school and

for further details. And after the reunion it's time to...
17th June '03 - Go Down to the Hoe-Down!
From 5pm this Saturday, the Hornton School
Association hold a Barn Dance and BBQ in the pavilion. There will be games
for the children on the football field and a bouncy castle, plus a BBQ with
licensed bar and dancing to popular local folk group "Apricot Pie". The
Association organizers are appealing for any gifts for the Tombola stall
and during the evening they will be drawing the winning tickets for the
Grand Draw. Prizes on offer are a Microlight flight, a Pamper day, £50
cash, a case of Cava, plus many more! Tickets for the evening are £4 each or
£15 for a family of four, available from Jane Wain (01295 670716) or any
committee member. Hope to see you there!
16th June '03 - School Hits a High Note
At 2pm on June 19th, everyone is invited to Hornton Primary School for a special performance by the children -
the highlight of their Music Week. If it's wet, the show will go on - and be held in the Methodist Chapel, Miller's Lane. And don't rush away afterwards.
There will be refreshments waiting!
12th June '03 - Yoga Classes
There’s Yoga in Hornton at the Methodist Chapel, Miller’s Lane, tonight and every Thursday night at 7pm until July 24. New members are really welcome. It costs just
£4 per person and the class lasts an hour-and-a-half. Each participant also makes a 50p donation to the Chapel. Teacher Pam Monk, of Banbury, plans a
different sequence of stretching yoga movements each week, with a relaxation session at the beginning and end of each class. Please bring an exercise mat
and wear loose, comfortable clothing. For more details, call Chris Woodcock on 01295 670795.
12th June '03 - Get Down to the Glebe!
Did you know that Hornton has its very own wildlife paradise - right in the centre of the village? The Glebe - the land next to St John the Baptist Church on
the other side of the Tinker Tank path - has been turned into a haven of tranquillity for all manner of wild flowers, birds and insects, so please do come
along and explore this beautiful spot while it’s at its best. As a result of the hard work of Bill Jeffs, you can walk through paths cut into the high grass where
you’ll find cow parsley, comfrey, marsh marigolds, water irises, forget-me-nots, milkmaids (the kind with roots, not legs!), buddleia, buttercups, campion
and gunnera. This is the perfect time of year for a stroll, so pop into the Glebe soon while the flowers are so beautiful!
12th June '03 - Church Services
Hornton Churches Together will hold an open air service on the village green with the Salvation Army this Sunday, June 15, at 2.30pm.
11th June '03 - School News
Hornton Primary School’s Chair of Governors, John Offord, has been elected as a parent governor to serve
another four year term from this September to August 2007.
Everyone is invited to the school on Thursday, June 19, for a special performance by the children as the highlight of Music Week. If it’s wet, the show will be
held in the Methodist Chapel, Miller’s Lane. Whatever the weather, there will be refreshments!
11th June '03 - Coffee Morning is Hot Stuff!
The heating fund for Hornton’s Methodist Church is £204 richer following a very successful coffee morning. The sum - which was raised with the help of a
cake stall and a bring and buy sale - was a lot more than the organisers were expecting. “I don’t know where all the money came from!” said joint organiser
Jean Burden but all those responsible for running the event were very grateful to everyone who came along and made it such a success.
10th June '03 - Fun Day for Fathers
It’s all happening for the Dads down at Hornton Pavilion in Bell Street this Sunday, June 15. A special Father’s Day event will feature a BBQ and lots of games,
including rounders, bowling, table tennis. Keep your eyes peeled on the village notice board for further details in the next couple of days but bring the
Old Man down and give him a good time. He deserves it!
6th June '03 - Miles is the Man!
Councillor David Miles has been unanimously re-elected as Hornton Parish Council’s Chairman for the coming year.
The election was held at the council’s annual general meeting on May 19 and Cllr John Offord was unanimously elected Vice Chairman.
Cllr Miles also expressed a willingness to continue as a governor of Hornton Primary School. The election of a
Co-opted Governor to represent Hornton, Horley and Hanwell parishes is due to be held in the autumn and Cllr Miles was elected as
Hornton's nomination after receiving the unanimous support of his fellow councillors. If his nomination stands unopposed by
Horley and Hanwell parishes, he would assume the newly-styled role of Community Governor.
The councillors also agreed how to divide up the council’s workload over the next year through its committees. Cllrs Miles,
Eric Turner and Malcolm Cross will look after roads and highways; allotments - Cllrs Paul Burden and Bill Jeffs; the small playing
field - Cllrs Burden and Miles; finance - Cllrs Lynne Fickling, Offord and Miles; the Hornton website - Cllrs Fickling and Offord;
the Jubilee Multi-Purpose Play Area fund (JUMPA) - Cllrs Fickling and Jeffs. All councillors will
oversee planning and the running of the village pavilion.
The council also agreed to keep lobbying Oxfordshire County Council over what they see as a lack of road maintenance in the village.
After the last meeting, the council wrote to protest and received a reply from the OCC Environment & Economy department explaining
the reasons. The Clerk read the letter out to the meeting whereupon it was agreed that he would write to ask how the criteria
for maintenance were calculated. It was also agreed to express concern about risk of accidents along the poorly-maintained
stretch of road through Wroxton Brook for both the Bloxham minibus and the Jeffs Coach on the daily school run. It was noted that
OCC would try to attend to the road in the next couple of years but without compromising chances for major repairs.
Now that the charitable status of the Hornton Playing Field has ceased, the council discussed how the funds previously held
in its name would be managed. The ex-trustees are due to hold a meeting shortly to consider the various options, which will
be put to the Parish Council for consideration. It was hoped that the council would soon receive a quotation for the construction
of a disabled access to the Playing Field to enable an application for a grant to be put forward. As Hornton has entered the
2003 Best Kept Village Competition, the council also debated how to keep the verges regularly mown during the summer. The next
Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday, August 18 at 7.30pm.
6th June '03 - Life's a Beach!
The finale of the JUMPA summer programme is the Beach Party at the Hornton Pavilion in Bell Street on the
evening of Saturday, June 28. The Pavilion will be transformed into “Bell-Street-by-the-Sea” for the evening of disco and
BBQ - with Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts very much encouraged - to boost the funds of JUMPA, Hornton
and Horley’s Jubilee Multi-Purpose Play Area Fund.

There will be a Coffee Morning, with a cake stall and a bring and buy sale, this Saturday, June 7, from 10.30am to 12 noon in Hornton Methodist
Church, Miller’s Lane. All proceeds to Church Funds.
4th June '03 - Tea for 120!
The sun shone over Hornton last Saturday as 120 children - of all ages - celebrated the 50th birthday of the village playground, which was opened
on Coronation Day, 1953. The celebrations coincided with the unveiling of a new ride, purchased with the village’s very youngest children in mind.
Hazel Hedgehog was bought from money raised in memory of much-loved Hornton resident Hazel Burden, who died a year ago. The children were
enthralled by magician Eddie Kybert, who brought rabbits out of the hat and birds out of boxes, before it was time to cut the very special cake.
Designed by Becky and Anna Miles, it depicted two children on the playground’s swings. Baked and iced by Jean Burden, Lynne Miles, Jenny Franklin,
Claire Bottoms and Sarah, Jenny and Katie Walther. Lots of children went back for seconds! Every child was given a souvenir key ring of the
occasion, made by Jane and Kevin Wain, which featured the children’s faces and a photo of the playground. And, unusually for a Hornton event,
there was no raffle! Due to the hard work and generosity of playground committee - Don Wain, Mike Webber, David Miles and Paul Burden - and
their helpers, the whole event was free! Roll on the next 50 years!
3rd June '03 - Desperately Seeking Snapshots!
Have you got any old photographs of Hornton School and its pupils tucked away? If so, head teacher Wendy Clifford would life to hear from you!
Mrs Clifford needs the photos for the school reunion on June 21 and she promises they will be
returned safe and sound. If you have any, please ring her on 01295 670335.
3rd June '03 - Hoe-Down at Hornton!

and BBQ in the village pavilion. The fun kicks off at 5.00pm, straight after the School Reunion - so for those people who attend the celebrations
there, come straight on down! There will be games for the children on the football field and a bouncy castle. Then there will be a BBQ with
licensed bar, followed by dancing to "Apricot Pie". There will also be a Tombola stall (any donations gratefully received!) and during the evening
the school association will be drawing the winning tickets for our Grand Draw. Prizes on offer are a Microlight flight, a Pamper day, £50 cash,
a case of Cava, plus many more, so get your tickets early!! Tickets for the evening are £4 each or £15 for a family of four, available from
Jane Wain (01295 670716) or any committee member. Hope to see you there!
