28th June '06 - Cycle this Sunday

Or you can walk or drive instead!

The annual Hornton Leisure Cycle Ride is taking place this Sunday, July 2, and this year it’s got an extra attraction - tea and cakes for the hungry participants at the end of the journey! Organiser Lynn Corke said that once again the emphasis will be very much on leisure.

“We’ll start from the village green at 11am and go on a circular route via the Plough at Bodicote, which does a good pub lunch,” she said.

“At the pub, walkers and car drivers can join us and then we’ll cycle back to Hornton in time for tea. If people can bake a cake - or provide a bottle of wine - as a contribution, that would be great.”

You can just turn up on the day but Lynn said that it would be really helpful to give the pub some idea of numbers so, if you are thinking of coming, please ring Lynn on 01295 670673.

28th June '06 - Be Neighbourly

Please come along to the Neighbourhood Watch annual - or should that be bi-annual? - BBQ. It’s set to take place on Sunday, July 16, between 6pm and 8pm on the village green - weather permitting.

Members should meet on the green at 6pm and the £2.50 cost will include refreshments.

With so much happening at in the club, why not join? You don’t have to have green fingers - just be keen on gardens and gardening. And you can put in your flowers and produce in the annual show every August. The club secretary is Sally Tweedsmuir on 01295 670608.

28th June '06 - Here for the Beer

Bring your favourite bear for a day of cuddly events at Upton, including a teddy bear trail in the gardens, a prize for best-dressed bear and a Bear Parade on the south lawn.

22nd June '06 - Pop along to the Pavillion

The future of Hornton Pavilion will be discussed tonight, Thursday, at the AGM of the Pavilion Committee which this year has been turned into an open public meeting - and you can only have your say if you’re there!

Andy Perry, the co-ordinator of the steering group looking into the various options, will give an up to date report on the group's activities, but the committee are also keen to hear from anyone who would like to give their views on the building’s future. There are three options on the table - to build a small extension to the pavilion, to refurbish it extensively or to rebuild it entirely.

The meeting - which will start at 8.30pm - will also elect new committee members for the coming year.

The annual Hornton Leisure Cycle Ride is nearly here and this year it’s got an extra attraction - tea and cakes for the hungry cyclists at the end of the journey!

It all happens on Sunday, July 2, and organiser Lynn Corke says that once again the emphasis will be very much on leisure.

“We’ll start from the village green at 11am and go on a circular route via the Plough at Bodicote, which does a good pub lunch.

22nd June '06 - It's a Snip

It’s been a long time coming but, after years of energetic fundraising and hard work, JUMPA - Hornton and Horley’s Multi-Purpose Play Area - is officially open!

Robert Nunneley, a member of the family who generously donated the land near the pavilion upon which the area is built, cut the ribbon at lunchtime last Sunday and celebrations officially began.

JUMPA was christened with three five-a-side football matches - played by children, ladies and men - and the big crowd who turned up were refreshed with a bar and BBQ.

The ribbon cutting was just the climax of the JUMPA actrivities last Sunday. Earlier, 36 people took part in the ever-popular Golden Mile on Quarry Road. Andy Perry came in quickest at five minutes 25 seconds. Jane Senior was the fastest girl at six minutes 30 and Alex Cox, at just one second slower, was the speediest youngster.

At the opening ceremony, JUMPA chairman Steve Woodcock thanked everyone who had helped turn the project into reality - the Nunneley family for donating the land, the various sponsors who had given grants, the JUMPA committee who had worked tirelessly and the people of Hornton who had supported events with their presence and their cash.

22nd June '06 - Watch out - There's a party about

Hornton’s Neighbourhood Watch annual BBQ is taking place on Sunday July 16 between 6 and 8pm on the village green - weather permitting.

It’s a chance for newcomers in the village to get to know people and for existing villagers to say hello over a glass of wine. And since the wine is free, you can’t do better than turn up and drink your fill! See you there!

22nd June '06 - Magical Mystery Tour

The 3Hs Gardening Club had a “brilliant” time on their recent mystery tour, which took club members north through Stratford before ending up at a pub for an excellent dinner. “We had a lovely time,” said organiser Eileen Lewis. “The food at the pub, the Wheelbarrow Castle, was really good and needless to say we had a raffle coming back on the bus.”

The club’s next event is a trip to Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire this Saturday, June 24. It departs Hornton at 9am and there’s still a few places left, so if you’d like to go please ring Eileen on 01295 670449.

22nd June '06 - All that Jazz

Bring a picnic and your dancing shoes for a summer’s evening of live jazz in the beautiful grounds of Upton House this Saturday, June 24. The Max Collie Rhythm Aces will be providing the entertainment from 7.30 to 10pm and tickets cost just £12.50.

For more information, ring Upton on 01295 671121 or you can email uptonhouse (at) national trust.org.uk

And on July 9, it’s time for the Grand Teddy Bear’s Outing. Bring your favourite bear for a day of cuddly events at Upton, including a teddy bear trail in the gardens, a best-dressed bear competition and a Bear Parade on the south lawn. The fun starts and noon and goes on till 4pm.

22nd June '06 - Leaves on the Green

The mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council will be on the village green next Wednesday from 10.55 to 11.20am.

22nd June '06 - The Spririt was Willing

But the flesh was a bit weak and this column got the date of the Benefice Service wrong last week! Apologies to everyone concerned.

In fact, the Benefice Service is taking place this Sunday, June 24, at 10.30am at St Peter’s in Drayton to celebrate the Feast of St Peter the Apostle. There will be no other services in the Benefice on Sunday.

There will also be an 11am service in Hornton Methodist Church on Sunday.

And don’t forget that you can drop into the Methodist Church every Friday at 9.30am for coffee and a chat.

19th June '06 - Keep up to Date

The schedule for the HHH Gardening club has been released and can be viewed on the here.

15th June '06 - Come to the Kick Off

All eyes in Germany will be enviously casting a glance towards the world centre of footballing excellence this weekend. It’s Hornton, of course. Where else?

On Sunday – Father’s Day - JUMPA, Hornton and Horley's Jubilee multi-purpose play area, will finally be christened with a five-a-side footie tournament destined to put the World Cup in the shade!

All the action takes place on the sparkling new pitch by the pavilion. There should be one adult mixed match and two children’s matches in two age groups - primary and secondary – with players in fancy dress, so it’s time to get stuck in. Simon Perkin is the man to contact on 01295 670701 if you’d like to take part.

The footie will be taking place on the pitch after the official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1pm by a member of the Nunneley family, who generously donated the land for the project.

In fact, there’s something for all the family all day - from mid-morning till mid-afternoon.

Kicking off at 11am will be the annual Golden Mile Fun Run, up on Quarry Road at the top of the village. It’s a chance, once again, for able runners to prove their prowess and for fun-runners to dress up in something silly and strut their stuff.

Moments after cheering the runners across the finish line you will turn gently on your heels and amble back down the hill to the Pavilion. There, you’ll find a well-earned drink at the bar - courtesy of the Dun Cow - and a burger and banger from the JUMPA BBQ. Feel free to bring a picnic too.

And please look out for a suggestion box. Various ideas have been mooted for what to do with the land at the far end of the JUMPA play area and the committee would like your ideas. And if anyone is keen to suggest something and to take part in making it happen, then the suggestion box is waiting to hear from you! At the other end of the site, backing on to the Manor’s paddock, there will be some tree and shrub planting that we hope will be in place in time for this Sunday.

So, why not wander down to JUMPA in the meantime and take a look at the progress? The final play surface has now been laid and the football posts, basketball rings, netball posts and tennis nets are available and in place.

If you would like to know more – and especially if you would like to help run JUMPA or take part in the five-a-side tournament on Sunday - please contact JUMPA chairman Steve Woodcock on 01295 670795 or any other committee member.

And Friday night five-a-side footie is back on tomorrow, June 17, at 6.30pm. You don’t have to be super-fit – and you certainly don’t have to be a bloke! Guys and girls of all ages are welcome for a kickabout. Either pop down or, again, ring Simon for more details.

The more people who come, the better, because then the players can rotate every few minutes. Then it’s down the Dun Cow for a bit of post-match analysis over a pint or two of Hookie!

15th June '06 - Neighbourhood Watch BBQ

The Neighbourhood Watch annual (or bi-annual!) BBQ is set to take place on Sunday 16th July 2006 between 6pm and 8pm on the village green (weather permitting.)

It is a chance for newcomers in the village to get to know people and for existing villagers to say hello over a glass of wine.

15th June '06 - Pop along to the Pavillion

The future of Hornton Pavilion will be discussed next Thursday, June 22, and all villagers are invited to come along and have their say.

That’s the night of the Pavilion Committee AGM but this year, starting at 8.30pm, it will take the form of a public meeting to which all Horntonians are invited, so make a date!

Over the past couple of months, a steering group has been looking into the various options for the future of the building – whether to go for a small extension, a big refurbishment or a complete rebuild. Around a third of the village has taken part in a survey, saying what facilities they would like, the present building has been surveyed and contact has been made with nearby villages which have recently had new halls built.

And if you’d like to help shape the future of the pavilion by joining the steering group, please ring co-ordinator Andy Perry 01295 670403 or email him at andyperry1 (at) hotmail.com

Andy said he is particularly keen on one or two people joining the steering group who are keen to keep the present structure. A small number had specifically mentioned that on the survey form but at present none of them have volunteered to be in the group.

15th June '06 - Angle for an Invite

The next event in the 3Hs Gardening Club calendar is the outing to Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire on Saturday week, June 24.

It’s a Jacobean-style country house set in 98 acres of fine formal and informal gardens and, if you would like to go, you should ring Eileen Lewis as soon as possible on 01295 670449 to reserve your place. The coach departs Hornton at 9am.

15th June '06 - Wanna Fight?

If so, Upton House is the place to be this weekend! The fields around Upton will once again echo to the cries of battle this Saturday and Sunday, June 17 and 18, when the Sealed Knot restage a Civil War skirmish near the place where it all began.

There will be an encampment, battle drills, cavalry and even a siege on the House.

And on Saturday week, June 24, the house will be echoing to a very different sound – jazz. Bring a picnic and your dancing shoes for a summer’s evening of live jazz by the Max Collie Rhythm Aces in Upton’s beautiful grounds of Upton House from 7.30 to 10pm. Tickets are just £12.50.

You can get more information by ringing Upton on 01295 670266 or emailing uptonhouse (at) national trust.org.uk

15th June '06 - Church Services

There will be an 11am service in Hornton Methodist Church this Sunday, June 25. There will be no service in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist because there’s a Benefice Service at 10.30am in St Peter’s, Drayton, to celebrate the Feast of St Peter the Apostle.

And don’t forget there’s coffee and a chat waiting for you every Friday morning in the Methodist Church from 9.30am.

8th June '06 - Miss the Bus

Or do something to keep it!

Hornton only has one bus a week going into Banbury but even that’s under threat - unless we do something about it!

Jeffs Coaches have informed Oxfordshire County Council - who organise and subsidise the service - that they wish to terminate the contract on the grounds of insufficient revenue.

Only six people use the service on a regular basis - when there’s only one bus a week you might think it’s amazing the bus is that popular - and Alan has contacted all of them.

But isn’t up to all of us to make sure that Hornton keeps its lifeline? When you can’t drive any longer, you’ll need the bus if you’re going to continue living in our village.

Alan Cater says the service is being reviewed and re-tendered by the county council but under the circumstances, it must be considered as under threat of withdrawal. So why not drop a line to the council and say that you want the service to go on.

You can write to Tim Darch, Public Transport Assistant, Oxfordshire County Council, Speedwell House, Speedwell Street, Oxford OX1 1NE. Or you can email him at tim.darch (at) oxfordshire.gov.uk

8th June '06 - Get Ready for the Big Kick-Off

The Friday night five-a-side kick about is back on tomorrow, following the laying of the JUMPA pitch.

You don’t have to be a Beckham or a Rooney, just enjoy a few minutes’ footie before being substituted for a rest!

Simon Perkin is the organiser and he can give you more details if you call him on 01295 670701 or you can just turn up at the JUMPA pitch at 6.30pm.

The start time has been put back half an hour from 6pm to allow more people to get home from work but if you get home late, don’t worry. It will still be worth popping along for a late substitution before going down the Dun Cow for some in-depth match analysis.

And that applies to girls as much as guys. So see you there tomorrow evening!

And JUMPA kicks off officially on Sunday week, June 18.

There’s going to be a bumper day of sports and fun to celebrate the official opening, with something for all of the family from mid-morning till mid-afternoon.

First up at 11am will be the annual Golden Mile Fun Run on Quarry Road at the top of the village. There will be a chance, once again, for able runners to prove their prowess and for fun-runners to dress up in something silly and strut their stuff.

Then it’s down to the Pavilion for a well-earned drink - bar courtesy of the Dun Cow - and a burger and banger from the JUMPA BBQ. Feel free to bring a picnic too.

Festivities at the Pavilion and JUMPA site begin from 12.30pm, with the official ribbon-cutting to open the JUMPA site at 1 o’clock.

Finally, it’s on to the local footie action. The search is on for intrepid five-a-side teams to line up for a friendly fancy dress competition. JUMPA expects there will be one adult mixed match and two children’s matches, in two age groups - primary and secondary.

8th June '06 - Plans for the Pavillion

Various plans for the future of the pavilion are continuing, as the steering group co-ordinating them heard when they met last Saturday at the Dun Cow.

All three options are actively being worked on -proceeding with the original plan of a kitchen extension, going for a bigger refurbishment or building an entirely new pavilion.

Steering group members Ollie Fickling and Ian Donaldson, who are in the building trade, are in the process of costing the various options and also checking whether all of them are practicable.

Ollie is organising a structural engineer to examine the existing building and other members of the group are looking into the possibility of grants and what we might get for our money if we opt for a new building.

All this information will be used in conjunction with the highly-successful survey which was recently completed by around a third of Hornton residents. That way, the steering group hope to come up with the best possible options or options to be considered by the village.

More details of the group’s work will be available on the evening of June 22. That’s the night of the Pavilion Committee AGM but this year it will take the form of a public meeting to which all Horntonians are invited, so make a date!

In the meantime, if you’d like to help shape the future of the pavilion by joining the steering group, please ring co-ordinator Andy Perry 01295 670403 or email him at andyperry1 (at) hotmail.com

Andy said he was particularly keen on one or two people joining the steering group who are keen to keep the present structure. A small number had specifically mentioned that on the survey form.

8th June '06 - Clean and Gleam

If you notice any rubbish about over the next few days, please pick it up because the judges for the Oxfordshire Best Kept Village Competition are on the prowl! Hornton - a past winner - has once again entered the Small Villages section and judging for the Final Round and this Sunday, June 11.

8th June '06 - Three go off on a Mystery Tour

The next event in the 3Hs Gardening Club’s calendar is the Mystery Tour this Tuesday, June 13, which is sure to be magical! It’s just £10 for the cost of the coach trip and a meal. There’s still time to book up, if you ring Eileen Lewis as soon as possible on 01295 670449. Eileen’s also taking bookings for the next event in the 3Hs’ calendar, which is an outing to Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, June 24. Depart Hornton 9am. Tickets cost £16.

8th June '06 - Sealed with a Knot

The English Civil War will be re-enacted near the place where it all started at Upton House the weekend after next.

On June 17 and 18 you’ll be able to travel back to an age when the fields around Upton echoed with the cries of battle. The Sealed Knot will have their own encampment, battle drills, cavalry and even a siege on the House.

On the following Saturday, June 24, it will be time to pack a picnic and bring along dancing shoes for a summer’s evening of live jazz, in the beautiful grounds of Upton.

You’ll be entertained by the Max Collie Rhythm Aces and the tickets are just £12.50 for an evening of jazz from 7.30 to 10pm.

You can get more information from Upton on 01295 670266 or by emailing uptonhouse (at) nationaltrust.org.uk

8th June '06 - Open Book

The mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council will be on the village green next Wednesday from 10.55 to 11.20am.

8th June '06 - Church Services

Holy Eucharist will be celebrated this Sunday, June 11, in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist. As this is a United Service for the village, there will be no service in the Methodist Church.

And don’t forget there’s coffee, cake and a chat at the Methodist Churchevery Friday from 9.30am.
