A pair of Nikes would be helpful if you’re entering JUMPA’s Golden Mile on Sunday, but anything else on your feet will be just fine!
In the past, there have been babies in buggies, dogs on leads and even a couple completing the course three-legged.
The Important thing is that you turn up and support this ever-popular event, which is later than usual this year, having been originally scheduled for June 15.
It had to be postponed because several of JUMPA’s key organisers were unable to take part on the earlier date but they hope the fortnight delay should make for an even bigger and better event.
Because JUMPA was so successful in raising money for the building of the playing surface, all the capital costs have been accounted for but it’s vital to get an amount of cash each year for running costs and that’s where the Golden Mile, run on Quarry Road, comes in.
It all starts at 10.30am and people can get sponsorship forms in advance from Horley’s Mark Wright on 01295 730530 or from Hornton’s Ollie Fickling on 01295 670739 or Steve Woodcock on 01295 670795.
28th June '07 - Tip-Toe Down for Tapas
The Dun Cow are holding a Tapas Night this Saturday, June 30 - and the first plate of food is free!
All you have to do is “hire” a plate for the evening to enjoy a selection of freshly cooked and home-made tapas, washed down with a glass of home-made Sangria, from a genuine Spanish recipe.
Subsequent platefuls of food and you’ll also have the chance to sample a fine range of Spanish wines are at a nominal charge So dig out those brightly coloured shirts, your sun hats and shades and come on down to The Dun Cow on Saturday at 7.00pm for 7.30pm.
If you’re coming, it would be really useful if you could tell Gwyneth in advance on 01295 670524.
And put the weekend of July 20 to 22 in your diaries, because that’s the date of the Dun Cow’s Annual Summer Beer Festival.
This immensely-successful event attracts real ale fans from miles around as well as locals. It will be held in a special tent in the pub garden, starting at 6pm on the Friday and will either close at the end of Sunday evening - or earlier if the supplies run out!
Once again, the theme of the festival will stay a closely-guarded secret until it starts but you can be sure that there will be a range of delicious - and specially-brewed - ales for you to sample.
28th June '07 - Pop Down to the Pavvy
Pop down to the pavilion on the morning of Saturday, July 7 - with your paintbrush!
Alternatively, a roller will do. But your presence is very much required because there’s going to be a morning giving the outside of the pavilion a quick once-over with paint.
It will only take a few hours and the more people who can help, the merrier. Anyone who can come along should arrive at 10am if possible.
28th June '07 - We Won't Bet Wet!
Glastonbury-style galoshes won’t be necessary at Hornton’s very own music festival this year because for the first time the musicians will be under cover.
And that’s not the only change to the renowned Summer Blues Cruise because, for the first time in 24 years, it’s going to take place on the Saturday of the Summer Bank Holiday - August 25 - instead of the Monday.
Festival organiser Mark Bowes, of The Mighty Firebirds, said the main reason for the change was to allow the bands to play for longer - from 2pm to 7.30pm this year.
“It also gives festival bands and revellers chance to recover before their return to work!” he added.
“This year once again promises to be a real cracker, as we will be celebrating the life of Firebirds guitarist Ivor Shawyer who will have been gone for 10years this year. And for the first time ever we will no longer be” weather permitting” as we will have a covered stage. All the fans need to do is to turn up and bring appropriate clothing.
“As always, there will be fantastic real ales on hand plus a BBQ and ice creams.”
Anyone wishing to run any other stalls will be welcome but they must book with Mark in advance on 01295 670633 and make an agreed donation to Hornton village funds.
Tickets for the event itself are just £5 each - with children under 12 free - and all profits will go to village funds. Acts confirmed so far are The Mighty Firebirds, Deep Purple vocer band Taste of Purple, Caravan of Whores and Jake Jacobs.
28th June '07 - Wall be There
The 3Hs Gardening Club are going to see the magnificent walled garden at Broughton Grange on Tuesday, July 10. The tickets cost just £5 a head and anyone interested should meet on the green at 6.30pm.
Meanwhile, as Hornton was drenched with yet another downpour last Saturday, the canny members of the 3Hs Gardening Club were warm and dry on their annual outing to Tatton Park in Cheshire.
Tatton has two historic houses, the Mansion and Tudor Old Hall, set in 1000 acres of beautiful parkland with lakes, tree-lined avenues and herds of red and fallow deer - plus the magnificent gardens.
But most of all, it had no rain. The green-fingered tourists had a wonderful time, especially Phyllis Miles, who was 85 on Saturday, and Glenis Griffiths, who was celebrating her 65th birthday.
28th June '07 - Natter with the Neighbours
There will be masses of food and the drink be flowing on the green between 6 and 8pm on the evening of Sunday, July 22 when Hornton Neighbourhood Watch hold their annual party.
But most of all it will be a chance for everyone to get together, especially people new to the village, so don’t miss it!
28th June '07 - Bag the Bike
There’s a gent’s racing bike going for free for anyone who wants to go on the Hornton Annual Leisure Bike Ride on July 15.
But keen cyclist Simon Perkin says you must be quick or it’s going to that bike shed for old cycles in the sky - otherwise known as the council tip!
Simon has a new bike but he says his old one is in excellent condition and is free to anyone who wants to participate on the cycle ride but either hasn’t got a bike or would like another one. So get in touch with him on 01295 670701 as soon as possible.
And please ring bike ride organiser Lynn Corke on 01295 670673 if you are interested in taking part on July 15. The number of people who have agreed to come so far make it look as though this year’s event could be the biggest ever and Lynn would like to get some idea of numbers because there’s a pub lunch stop planned - probably in Bodicote.
“It’s much easier for the pub if we can give some estimate of how many people are going to descend on them!” said Lynn. “I don’t need a cast-iron guarantee but if you are interested in coming, please get in touch.
“Once again, we’re planning a nice, easy cycle ride over a gentle route. People travelling by car or on foot can meet the cyclists at lunchtime and at the end of the ride there will be tea and cakes in the garden of The Cottage in Church Lane.
“So come along if you can. It will be a great day.”

11th June '07 - Long Story
Rare long-eared bats are believed to be using the pavilion roof as a roost – and that’s delaying the plans for refurbishing it.
The pavilion committee were given the news at their annual general meeting last week. A further survey will still be needed before the rare bats’ presence can be confirmed
but if they are found they will have to accommodated in the refurbished pavilion’s design. This may mean extending the pavilion further to ensure the bats still have a
roost.
The one part of the refurbishment that won’t affect the bats is the knocking through of the kitchen into the scout room and modernising the facilities. Three estimates are
going to be sought for this work.
Les England stood down as Vice Chairman of the committee after many years of loyal hard work. Glen Walther is going to take over the role. The rest of the committee were
renominated and approved.
The committee are planning a barn dance in a tent on Saturday, August 18, so put that date in your diaries now!
And another date for the diary – the morning of Saturday, July 7. That’s when the committee are holding a painting party at 10amd. Please bring a bring or a roller and the
outside of the building is going to be given a quick lick of paint.

JUMPA's ever-popular Golden Mile, scheduled for Father’s Day this Sunday, has had to be postponed until Sunday, July 1.

11th June '07 - On Your New Bike!
If you thought that not having a bike might have given you the excuse for not going on the Annual Hornton Leisure Cycle Ride, think again! Now you can sign up and get a
bike for just £5.
Keen cyclist Simon Perkin has one to spare and is willing to give it to the first person who signs up for the bike ride, in return for just a small donation to village
funds.
“We have a 20-year-old gent’s racing cycle in reasonable working order which is free to anyone who wants to join the Hornton bike ride, provided they make a small
donation - say £5 - to village funds,” says Simon. “I got a new one two years ago and I’m having a clean out.”
Anyone interested should ring Simon on 01295 670701. And if you’re interested in taking part in the bike ride, the number to ring is 01295 670673. That’s where you’ll
find organiser Lynn Corke, who would like to hear from you beforehand if possible.
“Once again the emphasis will be on having a good time rather packing in the miles,” said Lynn. “We’ll be cycling on an easy route to Bodicote, where we’ll stop for a pub
lunch and where walkers and motorists can join us. It would be helpful to know how many people are coming to give the pub some idea of numbers.
“After that, it’s back to The Cottage in Church Lane for tea and cakes!”
11th June '07 - Be Civil, It's War
Civil War re-enactors The Sealed Knot will be bringing its authentic atmosphere back to Upton House this Sunday, June 17. There will be a proper Civil War skirmish between
11am and 4pm, with an encampment, battle drills, cavalry and even a siege on the House itself!
On Saturday week, June 23, Upton will hold one of its House Heydays with an open-air jazz evening. Bring a picnic and your dancing shoes for a summer’s evening of live
jazz, in Upton’s beautiful grounds. The music starts at 7.30pm and the tickets are just £12.50 each. As well as plenty of good music, there will be a prize for the

11th June '07 - Church Services
An excellent crowd of 40 people enjoyed a delicious picnic, arranged by Hornton’s two churches, in John and Lindy Bridgeman’s garden last Sunday. Everyone brought a
savoury dish for the table and the churches provided wine and strawberries and cream for dessert. Everyone thanked John and Lindy for their hospitality.
Mattins will be celebrated at 10.30am in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist this Sunday, June 17. Half an hour later there will be a service in the Methodist
Church.
Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for
sale plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip! And Thursday Club meets every week after school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room.
All children are welcome. Pamela Smith on 01295 730951 or Pamela (at) banx.fsnet.co.uk for St John the Baptist and Julie Stanley on 670507 or julieharrystan (at) aol.com

7th June '07 - Flit along to the Pavillion Tonight
The Big Bat Problem of Hornton should go a stage nearer being solved tonight when the Pavilion Committee hold their AGM and find out the latest.
It’s taking place at 8.15pm – in the pavilion, not surprisingly - when more details will be revealed about our furry friends roosting in the roof.
Both long-eared and pipistrel bats are believed to be using the roof as a roost and you can’t just kick ’em out. They’ve got to be given alternative accommodation. The
plans for the refurbished pavilion will have to include a special roost for the bats, plus arrangements to make sure they move house without being harmed – and you needs
a government licence to move them.
7th June '07 - Late on the Line
JUMPA’s ever-popular Golden Mile, scheduled for June 15, has had to be postponed until Sunday, July 1.
The delay is due to several of JUMPA’s key organisers being unable to take part on the earlier date but they promise the
fortnight’s delay should make for an even bigger and better event.

7th June '07 - The Key to a Great Time
Plans are well underway for this year’s Annual Hornton Leisure Cycle Ride, which is going to take place on Sunday, July 15.
Organiser Lynn Corke says that once again the emphasis will be very much on leisure, with a nice easy cycle route being planned to take cyclists over to a pub in Bodicote
for lunch. There, walkers and motorists can join them before everyone comes back for tea at The Cottage in Church Lane.
If you are interested in coming, Lynn would like you to ring her as soon as possible, so that she can get some idea of numbers for the pub. In previous years, the event
has ended up being much more popular than anyone could have anticipated.
“It’s nice to be able to tell the pub in advance to give them some idea how many of us they might expect,” said Lynn, “so please leave a message on 01295 670673.”
In the meantime, there’s plenty of time to get in a bit of practice, which is what Lynn is going to so – when she finds the mislaid key to her bicycle lock!
7th June '07 - All Knotted Up
The Sealed Knot will be bringing the authentic atmosphere of the English Civil War back to Upton House on Sunday week, June 17. There will be a proper

no service in the Methodist Church.
But don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards
