25th June '08 - Pop Down To The Pavvy

There’s a pavilion committee meeting tonight, Thursday, at 8pm. Not surprisingly, it’s going to be held …at the pavilion, and the plans to refurbish it will be to of the agenda. Pop down if you can.

And on Sunday, there will be a short ceremony at the Dun Cow to thank Joan Horsley for al the hard work she’s done in keeping the pavilion clean over the years. She will be sorely missed.

25th June '08 - Up The Garden Path

Busy on Saturday? If not, there’s still time to go and see one of the most beautiful gardens in England.

The 3Hs Gardening Club are going to Hever Castle in Kent. Once the home of Anne Boleyn, the castle’s garden is only now reaching its full maturity and includes the colourful walled Rose Garden which contains over 3,000 plants.

There’s still time to go - just. Please ring Malcolm Cross on 01295 670562 as soon as possible.

25th June '08 - Jam In

It will soon be Jam and Jerusalem in Hornton, if a group of enterprising women have their way. They’re starting a new Women’s Institute group and they’d like as many new members as possible!

New groups and events are started all the time in Hornton but this one is particularly welcome because there used to be a WI here that used to play a significant part in village life but which sadly closed down about 20 years ago.

Now Angeline Turner has organised a meeting where a representative of the Oxford branch of the Women’s Institute came along to have a chat. There was a good attendance with a wide age range. Quite a few other potential members who could not make the meeting also expressed an interest, so it has been decided to start a Hornton and Horley WI.

The first official meeting of Hornton and Horley WI will be in Hornton Pavilion on Thursday week, July 3, at 7.30 pm. That will give members a chance to organise a committee and also find out how to go about running the group.

If you want to find out more out more, please come along or ring Angeline on 01295 670460. Any woman can join - you don't have to be from Hornton or Horley, so if you have friends who may be interested, bring them along!

25th June '08 - Gold Blend

Come for coffee at Hornton Methodist Church and you’ll be helping underprivileged children.

The Coffee Morning, in aid of the National Children’s Home, will be on Saturday, July 12, from 10.30am to 12 noon. There will be all the usual Hornton excitements, including a bring’n’buy stall and a raffle.

25th June '08 - Toddle Along

Hornton Toddlers are back! If you’ve got toddlers, please pop along to the pavilion with them every Wednesday between10.30am and12 noon.

25th June '08 - Crackling Good Lunch

It’s time to book for Gwyneth’s next Sunday lunch at The Dun Cow - roast pork with all the trimmings - on July 13. She would like to know numbers, if possible, by Wednesday week, July 9. Pleas call her on 01295 670524.

This Saturday’s Greek night has been postponed because it clashes with the 3Hs Gardening Club outing and will be rescheduled in the Autumn. But preparations are well under way for the ever-popular annual Hornton Summer Beer festival, which is taking place from Friday, July 18.

As usual, there will be a theme for the name of the tempting array of beers on offer which will remain a closely-guarded secret until the festival kicks off. It will go on until closing time on the Sunday - unless the beer in the festival tent runs out first. But Gwyneth is optimistic that won’t quite happen.

“We haven't totally run out at a festival yet!” she said.

25th June '08 - Saddle Up

The annual Hornton Leisure Cycle Ride will really live up to its name this year. It’s taking place on Sunday, July 20, so that thirsty cyclists can celebrate the end of the ride by downing a few at the Cow Beer Festival and moving on to the Neighbourhood Watch BBQ!

“Leisure is always the most important aspect of the ride, which is why we’ll stop half way round to have lunch at a pub, where we can be joined by walkers and those travelling by car” says organiser Lynn Corke. “The plan is that we will leave the Green in Hornton at 11.30am, so a circular ride of a couple of hours - trying to avoid the hills, which is not necessarily that easy around Hornton.

“We’ll have a pub lunch and then return to the village for the beer festival. This will allow a break before the BBQ begins in the afternoon, although keen drinkers may not want to take a break, of course!

“All ages and abilities are welcome and we can even rustle up a spare bikes for those who don’t have one.

“We haven’t chosen a route, yet, so if you have any suggestions or would like more information, please give me a ring on 01295 67673.”

25th June '08 - Wool You Be Generous?

Hornton’s Isabelle Harris is still knitting hats and gloves for the shoe boxes that are sent to deprived children throughout the world and she would be really grateful for any donations of double knitting wool.

“The colour doesn’t matter, as I can mix and match,” says Isabelle.

You can pop the donations through the letter box of Isabelle’s house in Bell Street or call her on 01295 670541.

25th June '08 - All That Glisters

Do you have any old jewellery that’s broken or you no longer wear? If so, you could donate it to help Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The charity is collecting old jewellery until the end of July and Hornton’s Lynn Corke is trying to persuade as many villagers as possible to part with anything they don’t need!

“It can be costume jewellery or something more valuable which is damaged,” says Lynn. “Broken chains or watches, odd earrings - it can all help raise money to provide home nursing and support for those who are terminally ill and want to die at home.

“You can drop jewellery in to Laura Ashley in Banbury or Stratford, or pop them through my letter box at The Cottage in Church Lane. Burglars beware - we do have an alarm!

“Marie Curie also needs more volunteers so, if you can help out in any way, please get in touch with me.”

25th June '08 - Be Nice To The Neighbours

Come along to the green and be especially friendly on July 20.

That’s when Hornton Neighbourhood Watch hold their annual party - and everyone’s invited!

25th June '08 - Church Services

There will be an 11am service this Sunday, June 29, in Hornton Methodist Church, led by L Spokes. There will be no service in the parish church as there is a Benefice Service for the Feast of St Peter the Apostle in St Peter’s in Hanwell at 10.30am.

And don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for sale plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip! And Thursday Club meets every week after school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All children are welcome.

19th June '08 - WI Not?

New groups and events are started all the time in the best and busiest village in Banburyshire but the latest - a branch of the Women’s Institute - is particularly welcome.

Why? Because there used to be a WI in Hornton which used to play a significant part in village life which sadly closed down about 20 years ago.

But last week a meeting, organised by Angeline Turner, was held where a representative of the Oxford branch of the Women’s Institute came along to have a chat. There was a good attendance with a wide age range, with quite a few other potential members expressing an interest verbally, so it has been decided to start a Hornton and Horley WI.

One villager who is delighted is Eileen Lewis, who used to be a member of the old Hornton WI.

“The meeting was very well attended - there were about four of us from Hornton and 10 from Horley,” said Eileen, who had to leave the old WI in the 1980s due to family commitments. “The representative from the WI told us what was what and hopefully the Hornton and Horley branch will succeed.”

The first official meeting of Hornton and Horley WI will be in Hornton Pavilion on Thursday, July 3, at 7.30 pm. That will give members a chance to organise a committee and find out how to go about running the group.

If you are interested in finding out more, please come along or ring Angeline on 01295 670460. Any woman can join - you don't have to be from Hornton or Horley, so if you have friends interested bring them along! See you there!

19th June '08 - Here for The Beer

Dun Cow licensees Gwyneth and Martin Gelling are gearing up for their ever-popular annual Hornton Summer Beer festival, which is taking place next month.

As usual, there will be a theme for the name of the tempting array of beers on offer which will remain a closely-guarded secret until the festival kicks off at 6pm on Friday, July 18.

The festival will go on until closing time on Sunday, July 20 - unless the beer in the festival tent runs out first. But Gwyneth is optimistic that won’t quite happen.

“We haven't totally run out at a festival yet!” she said.

But Gwyneth has postponed the Greek night due to take place on Saturday week, June 28, as it clashes with the 3Hs Gardening Club outing.

19th June '08 - Be Nice To The Neighbours

19th June '08 - On Your Bike

19th June '08 - Summer Leaves

The mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council will be on the village green next Wednesday, June 25, from 10.40 to 11.20am.

19th June '08 - Late Nike Line Up

A pair of Nikes would be helpful if you’re entering JUMPA's Golden Mile this Sunday, June 22, but anything else on your feet will be just fine!

In the past, there have been babies in buggies, dogs on leads and even a couple completing the course three-legged.

The important thing is that you turn up and support this ever-popular event so that JUMPA can pay for itsrunning costs this year.

Because JUMPA was so successful in raising money for the building of the playing surface, all the capital costs have been accounted for but it’s vital to get an amount of cash each year for running costs and that’s where the Golden Mile, run on Quarry Road, comes in.

It all starts at 11am and people can more details from Horley’s Mark Wright on 01295 730530 or from Hornton’s Ollie Fickling on 01295 670739. There will be medals for all the participants - plus a drink or two dowen the Dun Cow afterwards.

12th June '08 - Can You Afford To Stay Away?

Hornton’s plans for affordable housing will finally be unveiled tonight, Thursday, from 7pm in the pavilion.

Everyone with Hornton connections will be very welcome but the plans will be of particular interest to villagers who have family members looking to move back here.

Rather than give a presentation, the architects will be available to talk to individuals or groups to answer any queries that may arise. Light refreshments will be served.

12th June '08 - Be Smart - Stay Away

If you’re a burglar and you’re eyeing up the lead on the roof of Hornton’s parish church, think again. The village’s eyes and ears are especially alert to any strangers hanging around at the moment but, even if you managed to steal the lead, you wouldn’t be smart to sell it.

That’s because the lead is protected with Smartwater. It’s a paint with a unique genetic code that will forever identify the lead as coming from the Hornton church roof. If you buy it, you will be proven to have bought stolen property. Even if you touch it, it leaves deposits on your hands which can be analysed. So burglars - be smart and stay away.

12th June '08 - David Does It Again

Coun David Miles has been unanimously re-elected as chairman of Hornton Parish Council for the next year.

The election took place at the council’s annual general meeting, held on May 28.

The meeting was told that a new person was needed to mow the grass on the bank by Perkins Close. Coun Miles has spoken to the person who cuts the grass on behalf of Oxon Highways elsewhere in the village and he will obtain a quote for the additional cost of having this done. Adrian Horsley no longer wishes to cut the grass bank by Perkins Close and the council paid tribute to his efforts over the years.

Councillors also agreed to pay a £150 grant to Hornton’s village newspaper, The Gossip.

Finally, the meeting was told that the drain outside the Church Room has become blocked, almost causing flooding in to the building. Parish Clerk Alan Cater will notify Oxon Highways and will also suggest that the culvert near to Holloway House could be cleared at the same time.

12th June '08 - Glen Goes For It

Glen Walther is to be the new chairman of the pavilion committee, following last week’s AGM.

But the committee still needs a secretary, so if you have a bit of spare time on your hands, please call Glen on 01295 670627. And the pavilion also needs someone to clean it on a weekly basis for a small remuneration.

Plans for a refurbished pavilion are now being drawn up and, as soon as they are available, there will be an open day when people in the village can come along and give their comments.

12th June '08 - Don't Be Cross

You’ll kick yourself if you miss the 3Hs Gardening Club outing this year, because it’s to one of the most beautiful gardens in England.

The club members are going to Hever Castle in Kent on Saturday, June 28. Once the home of Anne Boleyn, the castle’s garden is only now reaching its full maturity and includes the colourful walled Rose Garden which contains over 3,000 plants.

But there’s still time to go. You just need to ring treasurer Malcolm Cross on 01295 670562 as soon as possible.

12th June '08 - In The Pipeline

Dun Cow licensees Gwyneth and Martin Gelling are gearing up for their ever-popular annual Hornton Summer Beer festival, which is taking place next month.

As usual, there will be a theme for the name of the tempting array of beers on offer which will remain a closely-guarded secret until the festival kicks off at 6pm on Friday, July 18.

The festival will go on until closing time on Sunday, July 20 - unless the beer in the festival tent runs out first. But Gwyneth is optimistic that won’t quite happen.

“We haven't totally run out at a festival yet!” she said.

12th June '08 - We're Only Here For The Beer

12th June '08 - Toddle Along

Hornton Toddlers are back! They are meeting every Wednesday morning in the pavilion from 10am to 12noon when every toddler - and their parents - will be welcome.

But you know what happens to toddlers after a while, don’t you? They stop toddling, start walking and become children! That’s what will soon happen to the children of organisers Claire Bottoms and Laura Short, so they need to pass to toddlers baton on to a new generation of Mums or Dads.

If you’re interested in coming to toddlers, please ring Laura on 01295 670232 or Claire on 01295 670776. If you’re interested in helping to organise Toddlers, reverse the charges!

12th June '08 - Take One

If you’ve thought about making a short film for a Hornton Film Festival but have never got round to doing it, this is your year!

The film festival is taking place in Autumn this year so that people have an opportunity to film during the long Summer days and now’s the time to begin planning your entry.

“The Autumn scheduling allows for more of the outdoor filming to happen, rather than filming in the depths of Winter,” said festival organiser Pete Whitehead. “This may be something of a relief to those who bravely froze their way through the making of Hornton 2005 BC a couple of years ago dressed only in flimsy fur fabric!

“Please have a go. Don’t forget that all the equipment that you need is available to borrow - including a camera and a computer with easy editing software loaded on it.

“And there’s now a wealth of expertise in the village, after the previous three festivals, so if you need any help or a bit bashful about having a go, just ask!”

You can call Pete any time on 01295 670320. When you’re up and running, there will be no stopping you!

12th June '08 - All That Jazz

5th June '08 - Magical Trip

It’s not too late to go on the 3Hs Gardening Club ever-popular mystery tour. It starts from Hornton village green at 6.15pm next Tuesday, June 10, and will end up with dinner.

Please ring Malcolm Cross on 01295 670562 as soon as possible if you would like to come. And Malcolm is the person to ring if you’d like to go on the club’s annual outing, on June 28.

5th June '08 - A Bug's Life

Hornton Primary School and Peachtree Pre-school staged an Ugly Bug Ball to celebrate the grand opening of their new Partnership Foundation Stage Unit.

Following this term’s topic of mini-beasts, the children arrived at the Ugly Bug Ball dressed as ladybirds, bees, spiders and worms. The ribbon was cut by former Headteacher Wendy Clifford and former pre-school chair William Huskisson. Then the children entertained the crowd with creepy-crawly songs before inviting parents to share cups of tea and mini-beast themed cakes.

As well as the new unit, the recent building work has included the creation of an outdoor play area, in order to enable children to explore a much wider variety of play activities.

‘This setting celebrates the learning that children do through exploratory play”, said Jennie Perry, chair of Peachtree Pre-school, “and we are all enjoying working in Partnership with the school”.

5th June '08 - The Nursery End
