Hornton Archive - March 2007

29th March '07 - Soup on Saturday

There’s a delicious soup and crusty bread lunch being served at Hornton Methodsit Church this Saturday, March 31, from 12 noon to 2. All proceeds will be used in aid of the May Day Flower Festival.

29th March '07 - Eyes Down on Tuesday

The Hornton Ladies Working Party are holding a bingo this Tuesday, April 3, in the Church Room at 7.30 pm. Look In!

29th March '07 - Red Alert

Local Red Cross organisers are appealing for someone in Hornton to do a house-to-house collection during the charity’s annual fundraising week at the beginning of May.

Area organiser Maggie Palin, from Wroxton, says that collections in the Banburyshire villages raise more than any other part of Oxfordshire.

“That’s vital to the success of The Banbury Centre, which provides for the local community,” said Maggie. Mrs Patrick used to organise it for us, and then Mrs Offord took on collecting in Bell Lane for the last five years, but it would be marvellous to have the whole village covered or a very least a little more cover.

“If anyone has a couple of hours to give one evening or at a weekend, it would make all the difference to Red Cross. My phone No is 01295 730592. I look forward to hearing from you when you have a moment. Many thanks!”

29th March '07 - Bats in the Belfry

Hornton Pavilion definitely has bats - and one of the species there may prove a problem as the plans are laid for refurbishing the building.

You can just evict bats - they’re a protected species and Pavilion chairman Ian Harris says more investigations will have to be made after an initial survey of the roof.

“It is almost certain following a survey that we have two species of bat using the Pavilion as a summer roost,” said Ian. “This means that we will have to get a licence from the Department of Rural Affairs before any work can commence and also that the plans that we had agreed will have to be modified to accommodate the bats.

“There are probably Pipistrelles and Brown Long Eared using the roof space - the pipistrelles are easily accommodated and should readily move to nest boxes but the Long Eared are more of a problem in that they need roof space to fly and feed in - aminimum of two metres high and five metres long).

“There will be another survey, probably in May to confirm the situation and we will discuss new proposals at the AGM on June 7.”

29th March '07 - It's a Nailbiter!

With just two matches to go in this season’s Harbury and District Crib League, the title is still up for grabs - with the Dun Cow very much in the race!

The Hornton cribbers started their latest match, against the Shoulder of Mutton from Granborough in second place. But even a sneaky 4-3 away win worthy of Chelsea wasn’t enough to close the gap on Kineton league leaders The Carpenters Arms because they won a home match by the same margin against the Green Man from Long Itchington. They are just two points in front.

And hard on Hornton’s heels are the Harbury Club from surprisingly, Harbury who also won 4-3 and have the same points total at the Dun Cow but with a slightly inferior points difference.

So it’sthe Carpernters’ to lose but it’s still all to play for. Come on Hornton!

“We'd like to thank everybody who came and thank Elspeth, William, Carlie and Anne for their help on the night and also Sarah for help setting up.”

22nd March '07 - Ella can still go to the Ball

Hornton’s Ella Bridgland has won out over 4,500 other girls to reach the last round of a nationwide beauty contest and she’ll make it all the way to the final in Barbados - if you vote for her by the end of the month!

The search is on for two gorgeous girls to represent our female teenagers today and you can see 15-year-old Ella, who lives in Bell Street, if you log onto www.teenqueenuk.com. 22nd March '07 - 24 on 21

This year’s Hornton Film Festival is only five weeks away, so now’s the time to make a short film for the chance of winning Tinsel Town’s biggest “gong” - a Horny!

And this year there’s a new category to encourage as many people as possible to try their hand at film making - the 24-hour movie making challenge!

The idea is simple - you borrow the village’s video equipment for just a day and make a short film - maximum two minutes’ long but it could be less. Everything you need is available, including all the latest camera and computer gear to produce a high-quality video - now a village resource for everyone to share. The equipment comes with an idiot’s guide on how to use it and there’s plenty of help and advice on hand, so there’s no excuse for not giving it a go! But don’t leave it too late as there is certain to be high demand for the equipment in these last few weeks before the Festival itself, which is taking place on Saturday, April 21, in a glittering premiere-style event at the Pavilion.

The 24-hour films can be about anything, says festival organiser Pete Whitehead.

“It could be about a topical issue, a fly-on-the-wall documentary, even a simple voiceover to some photos or video images,” he said.

“I am hoping for at least 10 of these short films to be able to show on the night, although I may have to “coerce” a few of you to take part if there are not enough volunteers. You have been warned.”

If you need any information, or would like to book the camera and/or computer for anytime between now and April, please call Pete on 01295 670320. And if you’re not still sure about what it all entails, DVDs of the 2005 and 2006 events are available at just £10 each.

22nd March '07 - Spots Off

The Dun Cow crib team knocked the spots off the opposition in their latest match when they beat the Greaves Club, Bishops Itchington, 6-1 in their latest Harbury and District Crib League match.

The trouncing home win puts the Hornton cribbers second in the table with just three matches to go and it revenge for them against Greaves, who put them out of the league’s cup competition in January 5-2.

22nd March '07 - Chick it Out

It’s Charlie Chick’s Easter Egg Trail! It’s fun for all ages and tasty prizes can be won on the eggciting trail through the grounds of Upton House the week after next on April 7, 8 and 9.

You can enjoy special Easter menus in the Pavilion Restaurant, and glorious spring colour in the gardens between midday and 4pm.

22nd March '07 - Bumper Cropley

Expert Janet Cropley wowed the 3Hs Gardening Club at their latest meeting when she talked about Summer flowering bulbs.

“She was super,” said club secretary Sally Tweedsmuir. “She trained at Cambridge Botanical Gardens and she’s very knowledgeable.”

The next meeting, on April 10, is the annual meeting and there will also be a talk by Kineton florist Gillian Hawtin.

The club’s annual outing will be on June 23 to Tatton Park in Cheshire. Its two historic houses, the Mansion and Tudor Old Hall, are set in 1000 acres of beautiful parkland with lakes, tree-lined avenues and herds of red and fallow deer.

22nd March '07 - Church Services

This Sunday, March 25, is Passion Sunday and there will be two 11am services in Hornton, at both the Methodist Church and the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.

The Ironstone Benefice Lent Course for 2007 meets for the final time next Tuesday, March 27, at 7.30pm in Wroxton Village Hall. The theme is Practical Churchmanship and it’s a very informal and friendly occasion, so please come along. The theme is Practical Churchmanship and it’s a very informal and friendly occasion, so please come along. 15th March '07 - We Never Close

Hornton’s Youth Club has been going for 20 years but it will have to close unless organisers Ian Harris and Les England can get some help – and fast.

Ian and Les can’t manage every weekly session now and they desperately need a bit of help on Thursday evenings.

“Our affiliation and insurance expires at the end of the month and I think we will have to decide not to renew unless we can be sure of regular and reliable help, which of course means that the club will have to close,” explained Ian.

So can you spare a weeks or two every week or so to help out at Hornton’s Youth Club?

The kids – and the adults – have great fun and if you’d like to find out more, please contact Ian as soon as possible on 01295 670541.

15th March '07 - Handy Andy

Hornton’s Andy Perry has been busy with the paperwork for the refurbished pavilion and there should be exciting developments very soon.

“I am in the process of applying for grants from the local waste management company, Sita, and the big Lottery Fund among others,” said Andy. “The Big Lottery Fund requires applications to be submitted by the end of April. All I need is three to enable me to complete the forms.

“I have contacted the council and they have sent me the forms to apply for planning permission. From this point it will take around eight to ten weeks to gain permission to start the work.”

Meanwhile, the bats in the roof are also being given the once-over to see what needs to be done, if anything, to move them safely.

15th March '07 - Cinderella

Who’s going to the ball? Hornton’s Ella Bridgland is – if you vote for her! She’s won out over 4,500 other girls just to reach the last round of a nationwide beauty contest and she’ll make it all the way to the final in Barbados – but she needs your support.

1st March '07 - Dinner Progressing Nicely

This Saturday’s Hornton Progressive Dinner Party is on course to be a great success, with new people who have never taken part before taking the plunge.

Organiser Anne Joyner said she was delighted that new progressive diners had decided to come on board and planning for the next event is already under way!

“Last autumn we tried to stage a progressive BBQ but we left it too late and the weather was terrible, so it couldn’t go ahead,” explained Anne. “However, lots of people thought it was a really good idea. It would be cheaper to cater for a progressive BBQ than a progressive dinner party and people who don’t think they’ve got the room for dinner can take part by using their gardens.

“Everyone in Hornton has got a garden, so look out for the progressive BBQ forms in the next edition of The Gossip.”

In the meantime, Saturday’s diners look set to have a great time and make a wodge of cash for a good cause – the fund to refurbish Hornton pavilion.

1st March '07 - Going Green

Well, what else could Peachtree Pre-School do? They’d booked the Pavilion for two weeks on Saturday – March 17 – for a Mexican evening only to discover that it’s St Patrick’s Day!

So now they’re holding and Irish Night instead. Everything will have an Irish theme from the music, to the food, drink and the activities. All you have to do to join in the fun is book your tickets at just £7.50 each with Laura Short on 01295 670232 or Claire Bottoms on 01295 670776.

£150 was donated to the Air Ambulance, £600 to the Church, £200 to the Church Room, £50 to The Gossip, £50 each to the Brownies and Hornton Youth Club and £100 to Katherine House Hospice.

1st March '07 - Out of the way, Oscar

Forget the Oscars. The only “gongs” really worth going for in the world of the silver screen are the Hornies – and you can win one by entering a short film in this year’s Hornton Film Festival!

And this year there’s a new category to encourage as many people as possible to try their hand at film making – the 24 hour movie making challenge!

The idea is simple – you borrow the village’s video equipment for just a day and make a short film – maximum two minutes’ long but it could be less. But don’t leave it too late as there is certain to be high demand for the equipment in the last few weeks before the Festival itself, which is due to take place in April 21 2007.

1st March '07 - Going for Gold

JUMPA is hoping for the biggest-turnout ever for the Annual Golden Mile and the best way to do that is to get everyone to put the date in the diaries now – Sunday, June 17, which is Father’s Day.

The organisers want as many families, pets and aspiring Paula Radcliffes as possible, with all abilities, numbers of legs - some entrants in the past have had three - and prams as possible.

1st March '07 - Cribbers' mid table move

The Dun Cow are exactly mid table in the Harbury and District Crib League after their latest match – a 5-2 away victory over Bishops Itchington British Legion. But they’re only four points behind the top-of-the-table Carpenters Arms from Kineton and with the lead changing weekly it’s all to play for as the season moves towards an exciting climax.

1st March '07 - Bargain Basement

There’s a rare chance to see the basements of Upton House this weekend – and it’s free.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4, and the weekend after next you can peer into the 'downstairs' life of the house and find clues to the house's early history. More details from Upton on 01295 671122 or by emailing uptonhouse (at) nationaltrust dot org dot uk

Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 8.30am this Sunday, March 4, in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist. There will be a United Service of Holy communion in the Methodist Church at 11am.

The Ironstone Benefice Lent Course for 2007 meets for the second time next Wednesday March 7, at 7.30pm in Wroxton Village Hall. The theme is Practical Churchmanship and it’s a very informal and friendly occasion, so please come along. Seasons, furniture, vestments, ritual and the layout of the Church are some of the items to be discussed and thought through: we shall also think about the Bible and the lectionary, saints, ministry and the books we use. The meetings start at 7-30 pm prompt and finish at 9-0 pm. This year’s groups are in response to many requests from parishioners.

Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 9.30am to 12.30pm. There are Phoenix greetings cards for sale plus a book and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip! And Thursday Club meets every week after school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All children are welcome.
