Hornton Archive - March 2009

26th March '09 - It's a Peach!

Hornton’s Peachtree Pre-school has received a glowing OFSTED report, which cited all aspects of the way it’s run as ‘outstanding’.

“At the start of the day the children burst in with energy and immediately jump into their learning,” says the report from OFSTED.

“Parents receive very good information through regular high quality newsletters, daily contact with staff, an informative notice-board and twice yearly parents’ meetings.”

The report also said that learning is often led by the children themselves, which results in them making rapid progress in learning across all areas of learning.

The pre-school, which is part of a Partnership Foundation Stage Unit with Hornton Primary School, is open five days a week and can take up to 13 children in any session. For information about admissions please contact Peachtree manager Karen Locke on 01295 678550.

It’s eyes down tomorrow, Friday, when the church’s Ladies’ Working Party hold their Easter Bingo.

The organiser of the recent Hornton progressive dinner party has said a big thanks to everyone who took part.

“A huge and heartfelt thank you to all of the wonderful hosts who helped make it such a great success,” said Anne Joyner. “Thanks as well to the guests, who, judging by the merriment as they all swapped places, enjoyed a splendid evening with great food, entertaining company and quite a lot of wine!

“We raised £700 towards the Pavilion Refurbishment Fund, so well done everyone and thank you again.”

The next progressive dinner is due in the Autumn.

26th March '09 - Dun Deal

The Dun Cow crib team won again last week - a 5-2 home victory over Kineton Sports and Social Club. There’s just one round of matches to go in the Harbury and District Crib League but it’s academic because the Hornton cribbers cannot be caught and will be crowned this year’s champions. Well done to captain Paul Burden and everyone in the team!

26th March '09 - Slam in the Lanb

The Dun Cow will be serving an extra special roast lamb lunch for East Sunday. Please book by a week on Wednesday if at all possible.

26th March '09 - Book 'em

The mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council will be on the village green next Wednesday, April 1, from 10.40 to 11.20am.

26th March '09 - Church Services

It’s Passion Sunday this weekend and there will be an 11am service in Hornton Methodist Church led by Mrs M. Clarke.

There’s no service in the parish church because there’s a Benefice Service at 10.30 am in Alkerton.

Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There is a book, DVD and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip! And Thursday Club meets every week after school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All children are welcome.

19th March '09 - Be Cheeky at the Checkout

Hornton School is only small and needs all the Tesco and Sainsbury’s vouchers it can get. So whilst the stores are holding their present promotions, go on - be cheeky and ask the person in front of you for their vouchers if they don’t want them. And if you ask nicely, the checkout staff will often give you a few more!

19th March '09 - The Eyes of March

It’s eyes down next Friday, March 27, when the church’s Ladies’ Working Party hold their Easter Bingo.

Look in at 7.30pm in the Church Room and all proceeds will go to the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.

And on Monday, April 6, at 7.30pm in the Church Room there will be more bingo - this time in aid of Hornton Children’s Clubs and organised by the Small Playing Field Committee.

19th March '09 - Moveable Feast

It was the most successful Progressive Dinner Party Hornton’s ever had and if you missed it, you missed a treat! More than £600 was raised for the Pavilion Refurbishment Fund as a dozen people acted as hosts and two dozens more progressed round the village as guests.

Organiser Anne Joyner said she was delighted with the response and said that there will be another progressive dinner in the autumn.

12th March '09 - We've Dun It!

The Dun Cow have pulled off a spectacular victory to win this year’s Harbury and District Crib League. There are still two rounds of matches to go but the Hornton cribbers, who have swept all before them throughout the season, cannot be caught after a crucial home win against North End’s Red Lion Inn.

The team, captained by Paul Burden, have been so dominant that they went through almost half the season by winning every match. Then the nail biting began, when Hornton lost first one, then two and finally three crucial matches. But they have held their nerve and are champions for the second time in four years. Well done, cribbers!

12th March '09 - Souper Time

This Saturday’s Hornton Progressive Dinner Party is already set to be a great success because so many people are taking part.

Organiser Anne Joyner says that she has six separate hosts cooking, which means that 36 people will be tucking into delicious dinners and the Pavilion Refurbishment Fund will be at least £600 better off.

But that could be just the start. Anne suggests that diners also bring round a bit of loose change as hosts may have other money-making schemes such as raffles.

12th March '09 - Look In

The church’s Ladies Working Party are holding Easter Bingo at 7.30pm in the Church Room on Friday March 27.

12th March '09 - Stone Me

When the Hornton History Group planned a special talk and slide show about the history of Hornton Stone, they hoped a few people might come along. But they never thought that more than a hundred people would turn up!

That’s what happened in their most successful venture to date.

“We never expected this response,” said the group’s Jane Wain. “We had standing room only in the Chapel!

“As well as Hornton villagers, there were a lot of visitors from surrounding villages who had previously worked at the Quarries or had had family who had done so.

“We began with a talk by David Robbins who showed slides depicting all the different uses Hornton stone has been put to around the world, and an insight into the craftsmanship of the stone masons. We then showed a recording of an old cine film, curtsey of Colin Neville, who has worked at the quarry since 1958.The film was originally silent but has had a narrative sound track added by Colin, who remembered many of the workers’ names.

“The film showed all the various process' involved in the quarrying of the stone and the machines used, including footage of the Ironstones railway. Refreshments were then served, along with the obligatory Hornton raffle, and everyone enjoyed meeting old friends for a chat and looking at the displays and old photos on show.”

“The History Group would like to thank everyone for coming - and especially David and Colin. The next meeting is Tuesday April 7 at 7.00pm at The Swallows, Eastgate. Any new members would be very welcome!”

On the following Sunday, Lindy Bridgeman is planning a very special Mothering Sunday service.

She would like children and adults to send her a prayer, poem or picture on the subject of Mothering Sunday for a special display in the church. It will also be collated into a special booklet for each church in the benefice.

“This is not a competition,” says Lindy. “In the past, children have written some wonderful things but inevitable these get lost, stolen or they stray!”
