25th November '09 - Warm Up

The Hornton Neighbourhood Watch Winter Warmer will take place this Sunday, November 29, between 5pm and 7pm.

It will have all the usual WW goodies, such as mince pies, mulled wine and the traditional Hornton raffle, but this year it’s going to be held at a new venue - the Dun Cow. See you there!

25th November '09 - Ho Ho Hornton

There are Christmas Fun and Games at Hornton School on Friday week, December 4. There will be festive refreshments, lots of games to play and prizes to win - including two raffles! - and all at credit crunch prices.

It all happens from 3.15-5.15pm and everyone’s hoping there might also be a visit from a very special guest if he’s allowed to park his sleigh in the playground…

25th November '09 - Yule Be There

It’s the traditional start of a Hornton Christmas - the Ladies’ Working Party Social and Sale at the Parish Church and it’s all happening on Saturday week, December 5, at 7pm. You’ll find all your favourite Yuletide goodies - mince pies, mulled wine, a Christmas decorations stall and the traditional Hornton raffle. The proceeds - which will be added to the £120 recently raised at a bingo session - will be divided between local charities and church funds. You can’t miss it!

25th November '09 - All The Trimmings

The 3Hs Gardening Club’s annual Christmas dinner is on Tuesday week, December 8, at the Roebuck in Drayton. If you ring Eileen Lewis on 01295 670449 she can make sure you get a place and she also has the menus.

25th November '09 - Wool You Be Generous?

Hornton’s Isabelle Harris has sent 128 pairs of knitted mittens and 170 hats to the People’s church in Banbury. They go into shoe boxes that are sent to deprived children throughout the world.

“I have now started next year’s contributions and I would be really grateful for any donations of knitting wool.

“The colour doesn’t matter, as I can mix and match,” says Isabelle.

You can pop the donations through the letterbox of Isabelle’s house in Bell Street or call her on 01295 670541.

25th November '09 - Tighter At The Top

The Dun Cow are still at the top of the Harbury and District Crib League after their latest 4-3 home win over the Greaves Club from Bishop’s Itchington but now the Red Lion from North End have are exactly equal with 12 points and the same points difference. Come on cribbers!

25th November '09 - Church Services

Jean Buzzard will lead the 11am service in Hornton Methodist Church this Sunday, November 29. There’s no service at the parish church because there’s a Benefice Advent Carol Service at 6pm in St Mary Magdelene, Balscote.

Don’t forget that you can pop in for coffee, cake and a chat in the Methodist Church every Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. There is a book, DVD and video swap - and, of course, lots of good gossip! And Thursday Club meets every week after school until 4.30pm in the Methodist Church School Room. All children are welcome.

25th November '09 - Upmarket

Hornton will have a special Christmas Market on its doorstep the weekend after next, December 5 and 6, when Upton House opens its doors for yuletide celebrations.

From 12 noon to 4pm each day, you’ll be able to avoid the battle of the High Street and buy special Christmas gifts and also see how Lord and Lady Bearsted would have celebrated the festive season when the ground floor is opened with a floral flare !

18th November '09 - Better Goto Bingo

The St John the Baptist Hornton Ladies Working Party will be holding their Christmas bingo at Hornton Sports Pavilion tomorrow, Friday. Eyes down is at 7.30pm, so look in!

18th November '09 - Rain Starts Play

The children of Peachtree Pre-School didn’t allow the wet weather to spoil their scavenger hunt last Saturday.

“ We do thank everyone that came and battled with the weather,” said Peachtree’s Laura Short. “The fantastic assortment of leaves, twigs, pinecones and stones are being dried and will be used for al ot of creativity over the coming weeks. We raised a fantastic £120.”

18th November '09 - Dance off to Wroxton

Horntonians keen on starting ballroom dancing classes in the village are trying to encourage everyone interested to begin - by going to Wroxton!

“There’s a taster session next Tuesday, November 24, and we hope that if we get enough people interested there’s za chance of a permanent class - perhaps in Hornton - so get dancing!”

The session starts at 7.30pm.

18th November '09 - Open Door

If you want to know more about Hornton’s plans for affordable housing, now’s your chance. There will be a drop-in event at Hornton Pavilion next Wednesday, November 25, between 5pm and 8pm. Village residents and potential applicants for the housing can come in and have a look at the plans, make comments and have a further chance to speak to Oxfordshire Community Housing Association’s representatives.

18th November '09 - Tight at the Top

The Dun Cow is still at the top of the Harbury and District Crib League after a 5-2 home win against the Green Man from Long Itchington. - but only just. They’ve got ten points - the same as North End’s Red Lion but with a better points difference.

The Hornton cribbers meet Kineton’s Carpenters Arms in the quarter finals of the knockout cup on December 1.

Hornton Neighbourhood Watch is holding its Winter Warmer on Sunday week, November 29 ,at a new venue - the Dun Cow.

“We thought it would be a bit cosier than the pavilion,” said organiser Jenny Bowes. “Everyone in Hornton is invited from 5 to 7pm for sausage rolls, mince pies and squash.

“Lucky Dip for the kids is free, mulled wine is just £2 per glass and other drinks are bar prices. We will of course have the obligatory raffle!”

18th November '09 - Worms on the Green

Bookworms should wriggle along to the mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council next Wednesday, November 25, from 10.40 to 11.20am, when it will be on the village green.

18th November '09 - Godhead to Godhead

There will be two 11am church services this Sunday, November 22. Don Wain will be leading the service in the Methodist Church and Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.

A scavenger hunt is being held by Peachtree Pre-School this Saturday, November 14, from 10-30am to12.30pm. Participants start at the school and the entrance is £2 per child, All welcome - and wellies and warm coats are recommended!

Hot drinks and soup and crusty bread will be available afterwards.

12th November '09 - Soup on Saturday

There will be home-made soup and crusty bread available at Hornton Methodist Church this Saturday, November 14, between 12 noon and 2 pm. As well is a yummy lunch, you’ll also find a bring’n’buy stall and the traditional Hornton raffle. See you there!

St John the Baptist Hornton Ladies Working Party will be holding a Christmas bingo at Hornton Sports Pavilion on Friday week, November 20. Eyes down at 7.30pm - and please note the change of venue from the Church Room where it used to be held.

Simon Perkin is keen to start a ballroom dancing class in Hornton and has already had more than a dozen people express an interest in coming along for an hour a week. Mattins will be celebrated in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist this Sunday, November 15, at 10.30am and not 11am as stated in the parish newsletter. Half and hour later, there will be a service in Hornton Methodist Church led by Hazel Stagg.

12th November '09 - Stick with Maggie

Maggie Higgins makes a plea to keep all your stamps off your Christmas cards this year - both British and foreign.

“The Royal National Institute for the Blind is desperate for them,” she says. “They can be sold to raise funds to support their vital work in the UK.

“As Christmas is fast approaching, I thought this would be a good time to start a collection in Hornton, though stamps can be collected throughout the year. During the festive season, many cards are received and I would like to take this opportunity to ask you all to take a moment of your time to tear off the used stamp - leaving, if possible, 1cm or so of envelope bordering the stamp.

“These used stamps can then be dropped off at Holloway House next to the green at the bottom of Bell Street and I will forward them on to the RNIB."

5th November '09 - Little Chat

Local historian Brian Little will give a nostalgic talk about Banbury entitled The Market Town Life to Hornton WI at the pavilion tonight, Thursday, at 7.30pm. The competition will be for a home-made brooch.

5th November '09 - Holly and Ivy

The 3Hs Gardening Club’s next event is a demonstration given by Freefields florists in Banbury at 7.30pm in the pavilion next Tuesday, November 10.

The Freefields girls came at very short notice on their first visit a couple of years ago and gave a terrific demonstration of how to make Yuletide arrangements with fresh flowers. Come along and see how they can brighten up your Christmas table!

5th November '09 - Second Helpings

The latest Hornton Progressive Dinner went so well that punters have already been asking when the next one’s taking place!

It’s going to be next March, so keep an eye out in the Hornton column, in The Gossip newspaper and on the notice board for details nearer the time. A delighted organiser Anne Joyner reports that this dinner made £587 towards the Pavilion Refurbishment.

5th November '09 - Beanz Meanz Playz

Tickets for Jack and The Beanstalk go on sale next month, rehearsals are well under way and it promises to be a show full of laughs and surprises.

Things are a lot more expensive than they used to be in the good old days of Hornton pantos, so the ticket prices this time will be £10 for adults and £5 for children of 11 and under - including interval refreshments.

The performances are during Spring Half Term - at 7.30pm on February 18, 19 and 20, with a 3pm matinee on the final day. All of the profits will go towards the Pavilion Refurbishment.

5th November '09 - Mutton Chop

The Dun Cow beat Granborough’s Shoulder of Mutton in the preliminary round of the Harbury and District Crib League Knock-out Cup.

The Hornton cribbers and the other three winners will go into the quarter final on December 1 together with the teams who had byes.

5th November '09 - Moving Story

The mobile library from Oxfordshire County Council will be on the village green next Wednesday, November 11, from 10.40am-11.20am.

5th November '09 - Church Services

There will be a Remembrance Sunday Service at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist this Sunday, November 8, at the slightly earlier time of 10.55am. As this is a village service, there will be no service in the Methodist Church.
