It was a triumph - the biggest and best film festival yet! There was a bumper crop of entries and more than 70 people squeezing into the pavilion to watch who of Hornton’s talented film makers would walk off with one of the film world’s most prestigious “gongs” – the Hornies!

It’s difficult to pick out highlights because there were so many, but Harry Joyner’s inspired miming had to be one and Steve Woodcock’s brilliant conversion of his living room into a space rocket for Mars Attacks 2 had to be another.

In the end, every entry spookily seemed to win a Hornie for something and organiser Pete Whitehead was especially pleased at the number of youngsters who had entered this year. The other big winner was the pavilion refurbishment fund, which will be £370 better off as a result.

14th October '08 - Jump To It

The JUMPA committee have been delighted with the number of people who have been using it for tennis and football over the summer. Now that the days are drawing in, member Chris Woodcock says there are few things to announce.

“Please watch out for the next quiz night, when Ollie and Steve will once again be pitting their wits against the assembled throng at the Dun Cow, with funds going to JUMPA maintenance,” she says. “There’s no date as yet, but posters will go up soon. Don't miss it!

“Back in the summer, the JUMPA committee invited an expert from Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre to come along and assess the land around the JUMPA court in terms of its natural value - flora and fauna. They are producing a report for us and this should offer us some advice on how to make the most of this natural habitat. We hope to have further news before Christmas.

“And the JUMPA team take part in a rota to make sure nothing is damaged or unsafe. Please do remember that bikes, roller skates and non-sports-shoes are not a good idea on the court surface. Also, if you see large stones or other debris on the court please do clear them away and report any damage to equipment or playing surface to a committee member right away.”

October 2nd '08 - Slow Down Soon

Speeding motorists who whizz down Bell Street and Millers Lane into Hornton may soon have to contend with warning signs, the parish council were told at their latest meeting on September 22. Two fixing points for portable speed indicator signs by Cherwell District Council will soon be installed and an on-site meeting to confirm the locations is to be held.

And there was good news from the children’s playground committee, who told the council that the Annual Coffee Morning raised £225 and a cheque for this amount has been sent to the Helen and Douglas House Hospice, which looks after terminally and seriously ill children in Oxford. Work to renew the fencing at the far end of the Playground should start in a few weeks and the planning application for the disabled ramp has been submitted.

The council were also told that plans for the new kitchen extension and the changing rooms have gone to Cherwell. The ladies on the committee, along with Laura Short, have been cleaning the Pavilion on a rota basis since Joan Horsley retired but they are hopeful that we can get a cleaner/caretaker in the near future. The road has been patched thanks to Glen Walther, David Miles and David Jarrett, but it still needs a lot of attention.

The music festival held at the Dun Cow on August Bank Holiday Saturday raised £1,457 for the pavlion, with a thank you from the committee to Mark Bowes and all those who helped. The Bonus Ball Lottery began at the beginning of September , 63 numbers have been sold and about £600 has been banked.

The council also heard that plans are still going ahead to repair the footpath from West End to the Church and Listed Building Permission has been sought, as the walls and footpath are considered to be part of the Grade 1 Listed Church.

Now Cherwell has instigated an investigation in to the flooding problem. Their Principal Engineer has undertaken a site visit and he has been made aware of the progress that has been made to date. Apparently, Cherwell via the Environment Agency has now been provided with funds to help in such cases of flooding in the area which may reduce the costs to residents. He will compile a Report but this means that there will be a further delay.
