There will be an 11am Harvest Festival service led by the Rev. Dorothy Hewitson in the Methodist Church this Sunday, October 4, followed by a Harvest “bring and share” lunch to which everyone is welcome. As this is a United Service, there is no service in parish church.

1st October '09 - In the Slow Lane

Fears that traffic is speeding down Miller’s Lane were not born out when Oxfordshire county Council Highways measured traffic speeds last month.

The news delighted parish councillors when they were given details at their latest meeting a week last Monday. Traffic was monitored in the week beginning September 7 and only one vehicle going down the hill drove over the speed limit - and then at only 31mph. Uphill, the average speed was under 20mph.

But the parish council are still taking residents’ fears of speeding cars seriously: portable speeding signs have been ordered and “drive slowly”notices are going up on lampposts at both entrances to the village.

But there was bad news on the four-wheeled front. Hornton residents using the Dial-a-Ride bus service will now have to pay for their journeys to Banbury. The Parish Council subsidised the service up to September but cannot afford to do so for the whole year and now it will cost £3 return. But the council will consider subsidising three months’ usage again next year and, in the meantime, the council will be lobbying Cherwell and Oxfordshire to see if improvements in the service can be made.

The council were also informed that Cherwell plans to recycle food waste before Christmas. Leaflets, stickers and special kitchen food caddies will be distributed but there will be no need for extra bins and no change in collection days.

And it looks as though the allotments will be sold. It was reported that the Charity Commission has advised that the Trustees of the John Fox Charity that they do have the power to sell the land and the trustees have decided to go ahead. The Trustees will be writing to allotment holders and H A Hart & Sons. The Pavilion extension fund received a boost after a SITA representative said she would recommend the project for grant consideration and Oxfordshire agreed to give a grant of £5,000.00 when the project is completed. Cllr David Miles reported that he had received one complaint from a resident, who wished to remain nameless, about the noise each year from the August Bank Holiday Music Event at the Dun Cow. But as this is a once a year event only that raises significant income for village causes, councillors were supportive that the event should continue.

1st October '09 - Police Surgery

Police Community Support Officer for Banbury Rural North, Lana Smith will be holding a Police Surgery on the 17th October in Cropredy for residents of villages North of Banbury. For full details see the police flyer.
