30th September '03 - Say Cheese

Fundraisers from Hornton and Horley are teaming up on Friday, October 3rd - to organise a cheese and wine party in aid of MacMillan Cancer Relief. The event, organised by Hornton’s Sarah Walther and Horley’s Joe Gamage, takes place between 7 and 9pm at 4 Gulliver’s Close, Horley. All contributions for the bring-and-buy stall will be gratefully received. There will also be a raffle.

And the MacMillan charity, which raises money for nurses to help cancer sufferers, is already £415 better off after the success of last Friday’s coffee morning staged in Hornton’s Methodist Chapel. It was as part of a bid to break the world record for the world’s biggest coffee morning and organiser Ronnie Emblen said the village certainly played its part.

“We had so many people promising to come that we had to move it from our house to the Methodist Chapel,” he said. “But many more still turned up on the day - a total of 64 in all, which was fantastic.”

September 26th '03 - Thirteenth Time Lucky

It’s a good job the organisers of the annual Gift Day for the Parish Church of St John the Baptist in Hornton weren’t superstitious. They held the event on September 13 but it raised a total of £484 to help look after the Church over the next year.

September 26th '03 - Gold Blend

Sales of delicious home-made cake, bric-a-brac and the traditional Hornton raffle helped a coffee morning held last Saturday at Hornton Methodist Chapel raise £153.20 in aid of refurbishment.

September 26th '03 - In for a Penny

The activities of the best and busiest village in Banburyshire have raised £131.06 in just three months - through the Hornton column of the Banbury Guardian! The paper pays six pence a line and though that might not sound like a lot, when you live in a village as active as Hornton, it soon mounts up. Since there wouldn’t be anything to write about if no one did anything, it seemed only right that the loot should be lobbed in the direction of a couple of village activities. This time, half of it’s going towards the fund to extend the pavilion kitchen and the other half to JUMPA, Hornton and Horley’s fund for a Jubilee multi-purpose play area. Next time it will go to other village causes, so remember - the more that’s reported in the column, the more money we’ll raise.

Roger would like to thank everyone who has supported the column over the past few months by sending in information about village comings and goings. Please keep it coming!

September 26th '03 - Church Services

There will be a service in Hornton Methodist Church at 11am this Sunday, September 28. Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in the Parish Church at the same time.

25th September '03 - Cribbing not Cheating

Hornton’s crack crib team is limbering up for a new season in the Harbury and District Crib League. The first match will be a home tie against the Green Man on October 7.

25th September '03 - Vintage Postponed

A planned wine tasting in aid of JUMPA which was due to go ahead on October 24th has now been put back till next year because the village pavilion is busy on that date. But keep your diaries free for a Saturday in March because it should be a great evening! Banbury’s oldest wine merchants, S&H Jones will be on hand to help people sample a range of exciting wines and you’ll also be able to buy some at special prices. The exact date will be fixed nearer the time.

24th September '03 - Yoga Class looks set for a Flying Start

Tomorrow is the first night of the exciting new yoga class in Hornton - and judging by the buzz in the village it should be a great success.

“I’ve had at least half a dozen calls from people who haven’t been before, so I’m expecting a good turnout,” said class organiser Chris Woodcock. “If we have a very popular response, then we may run two classes rather than one. We’ll see how it is on the first evening.”

The 90-minute class - at 7.30pm tomorrow in the Methodist Chapel - will be run by yoga teacher Sigi Castle. Sigi who is a former aerobics teacher from Banbury will initially run five weekly classes but if this proves popular the class will progress to eight or ten week terms.

Chris stressed that’s it’s most important that you turn up tonight if you possibly can, even if you can’t necessarily make every class over the coming weeks.

“It will be difficult to join in at a later date once the class is up and running,” she said. “If you can’t make all five sessions, however, you can always miss one or two of the later ones. Just sort this out with Sigi.

“The class will be suitable for all levels of fitness and can be tailored to individual needs. This style of yoga focuses on breathing and the development of your own daily routine - trying to get us into the habit of doing 15 minutes’ yoga a day.”

The classes will cost the same as last term’s classes -£4 per person per session and 50p each week as a donation to the Chapel to help cover their costs. Please also bring a yoga mat and a yoga head block, if you have one. Sigi can order a block for you, if not.

“The chapel space can cope with up to 15 participants, so don’t be shy!” said Chris.

Further details can be obtained from Chris on 01295 670795.

23rd September '03 - Break a record not a cup

Hornton is doing its bit on September 26th, to attempt to break a world record - for the biggest coffee morning ever! The bid will see hundreds of coffee mornings all round the country kicking off at the same time. The money raised will go to the MacMillan Fund for cancer research and Hornton organiser Ronnie Emblen says that so many people are coming in the village that the event has already outgrown its original venue.

“It’s all snowballed,” said Ronnie. “We were going to hold it at our house but we’ve got so many people that we’re now moving it to the Methodist Church in Miller’s Lane.

“But that doesn’t mean we don’t want any more people! Quite the contrary - the more the merrier. Everyone is invited and will be really welcome.

“The idea behind it came from Classic FM. Simon Bates said they were going to try to break the Guinness Book of Records attempt at the world record for a coffee morning and I thought why don’t I get up and do something? Then it started to get bigger and bigger and I thought, ‘we can’t get everybody in here at home’ and that’s when we decided to move to the chapel.

“There will be coffee, biscuits and cake plus a prize draw.”

Play your part in the Hornton’s bid to break a world record! It all starts Friday morning at 10.30am.

19th September '03 - Last Chance for First Course

You can still be part of the next JUMPA Progressive Dinner Party but you’ll have to be quick! All participants need to put their names in the village post box next to the notice board by midnight next Wednesday, September 24th, and the event itself is taking place on Saturday October 11th.

The idea is simple and such great fun that JUMPA, Hornton and Horley’s fund for a Jubilee multi-purpose play area, had to organise another one by public demand. You either opt to be a host or a guest for the evening. If you’re a guest, you go on a magical mystery tour round Hornton, eating a different course at each house and only finding out where you’re going next when you open a sealed envelope when you‘ve finished eating. At the end of the evening you pay £20 per head to your final host - pretty good value for a three-course meal with wine! If you’re a host, you have three sets of dinner guests throughout the evening and your contribution to the event is the food and wine. All the proceeds go to JUMPA, so everybody’s happy! LIBRARY

17th September '03 - Top Talk

Members of the 3Hs Gardening Club were treated to an fascinating talk on Batsford Arboretum at their latest meeting on September 9th. Sue Burn, who works at the arboretum near Moreton-in-Marsh, showed slides of some of the hundreds of trees there. She also gave members an account of the history, both of the arboretum and the house, which was once owned by the Mitford family.

“Due to holidays and illness only 15 members were able to make it,“ said club secretary Lady Tweedsmuir. “That was sad because those people who couldn’t make it missed a really excellent talk.”

Lady Tweedsmuir hoped that more members will be able to come to the club’s next meeting, in Hornton Pavilion on October 14th, when a talk on Country Customs will be given by the colourfully-named Dusty Roades.

16th September '03 - Saturday Morning's a Coffee Morning

15th September '03 - Yoga Class fuind Queen of the Castle

Hornton Yoga Class’s anxious search for a new teacher has hit the jackpot. Yoga teacher Sigi Castle has stepped forward and she will run a 90-minute class - with an exciting new format - which starts at 7.30 pm next Thursday, 25 September 2003.

Sigi is a former aerobics teacher from Banbury who will run for us a beginners’ course in Viniyoga for five weeks. Class organiser Chris Woodcock says the intention is that the class will progress to some eight or ten week terms if this first course proves popular.

“But it’s very important that you turn up for the first class on September 25 if you intend to sign up for the full course,” said Chris. “It will be difficult to join in at a later date once the class is up and running. If you can’t make all five sessions, however, you can always miss one or two of the later ones. Just sort this out with Sigi.

“The class will be suitable for all levels of fitness and can be tailored to individual needs. This style of yoga focuses on breathing and the development of your own daily routine - trying to get us into the habit of doing 15 minutes’ yoga a day.”

The classes are being held, once again, at the Methodist Chapel in Miller’s Lane. It will cost the same as last term’s classes - £4 per person per session and 50p each week as a donation to the Chapel to help cover their costs. If you would like to do all five classes, please bring £20 with you next Thursday. Please also bring a yoga mat and a yoga head block, if you have one. Sigi can order a block for you, if not.

“The chapel space can cope with up to 15 participants, so don’t be shy!” said Chris. Further details can be obtained from Chris on 01295 670795.

12th September '03 - Council Pooh-Poohs Dog Bins Plan

Hornton Parish Council have decided not to install dog bins in the village at the moment after residents’ objections. Two villagers, in a letter to the council which was read out at its August 18 meeting in the Church Room, said that they opposed the bins because they were unsightly in a rural area and would become smelly. Cllr Bill Jeffs said that this could reflect the general view of the village and proposed that no further action to install dog bins should be taken unless this became an issue again in the future. Other members of the Council made no objection to this.

At the meeting, Hornton resident Ken Hartlett received a pat on the back from Parish Clerk John Peace for “the excellent and very thorough task” which he has carried out in his second year as internal auditor of the council’s finances. Parish council chairman Cllr David Miles asked his colleagues to consider Mr.Hartlett’s nomination as internal auditor for the financial year beginning April 1, 2003. This was proposed by Cllr Jeffs, seconded by Cllr Eric Turner and agreed unanimously. The annual return has since been sent off to the External Auditors.

The council has spent a total £182-25 on felling several dead cherry trees on the village green and removing the stumps. It’s also giving £116-33 to Paul Barrett for hosting Hornton’s official village website - www.Hornton.org.uk. And the village’s newspaper, The Gossip, should be in the money soon. The meeting - in a move proposed by Cllr Malcolm Cross and seconded by Cllr Paul Burden - agreed unanimously that as soon as the council’s second tranche of council tax income is received, it should issue a cheque to The Gossip for £150 to help with costs of publication.

The meeting was told that now the Small Playing Field is officially no longer operated by a charity, it’s the sole responsibility of the council. Cllr Miles emphasized the need for the annual and weekly inspection reports to be presented to the Clerk at each meeting in future. Also, the annual report had to be passed on to the insurers and the report for this year was still awaited. The chairman and clerk had attended a Countryside Forum meeting at Steeple Aston and Cllr Miles said that grant funds should still be available to help finance the new access for disabled. Ken Whitehead hoped to produce two options for the access and would supply drawings shortly for consideration.

The council had received a letter from its insurers which set out the requirements for continued third party liability cover for the Small Playing Field. These included the requirement for council to assume sole responsibility for its upkeep and maintenance. It would also be necessary to transfer the balance of the present bank account into a new account in the council’s name but, in the meantime, it was agreed that the account would continue as it is and it would be audited independently up to May 15. The Clerk agreed to complete the banking arrangements to facilitate the eventual transfer of the balance to an account in the name of the Parish Council.

Cllr Eric Turner was nominated unanimously to stand for a further four-year term as a committee member for the John Fox Educational charity.

The council also heard that the chairman, Cllr Miles, had attended a recent meeting of the Ironstone Liaison Committee, where quarry operators and local representatives meet to discuss quarrying operations in the area. At the meeting, it was confirmed that the present quarry in Hornton would soon be levelled out and reinstated.

The next parish council meeting is scheduled for November 24, 2003.

The guests pay just £20 for a delicious three-course meal with all drinks included, whilst the hosts’ donation comes in kind - they supply all the food and wine. Chris and Steve Woodcock on 01295 670795 have more details or you can just put your name and address on a piece of paper and post it in the village post box next to the notice board by midnight on September 24.

2nd September '03 - Out to Lunch

Hornton School needs a new lunchtime supervisor. Could you fit the bill - or do you know someone who can? It’s the perfect job for someone who lives in or near the village, likes children and can spare just a couple of hours each week to look after the children.

They need to be supervised every day over the lunch break but headteacher Wendy Clifford says that the job could be shared if a commitment every day was impossible for one person. If you are interested, please ring Wendy or school secretary Sally Phelan on 01295 670335.
