Hornton WI is holding its own version of the Antiques Roadshow next Thursday, October 7, when Patrick Bowen comes to talk to them about fine art and antiques. You can
bring along unusual items for valuation to the meeting, which takes place in the Methodist Chapel at 7.30pm. The competition will be for an unusual button.

It’s time to put your name down for Hornton History Group’s special walk round the Battlefield Trail at Edgehill.
The walk kicks off at 10am on Sunday, October 17. But organiser Rosemarie Cater would like to know numbers as soon as possible.
“The Battlefield Trail, which was instituted in 2006, runs for three and half miles,” said Rosemarie. “Simon Marsh will be our guide and members of the Battlefield Trust
will assist him. The walk will finish back at the Castle Inn at around 1pm for lunch.”
A nominal charge of £3 per head will be made to the trust and anyone wishing to join should contact Rosemarie on 01295 670530 or at r dot cater (at) btinternet dot com as

Hornton’s next progressive dinner party is going to be held on Halloween weekend, so expect some weird and wonderful dishes!
That’s because Weird and wonderful is the theme for the food which hosts are being asked to provide, with guests being asked to dress ghoulish.
Just in case you’ve never been to a progressive dinner before, here’s what happens: you opt to be either a host or a guest. Hosts stay in one place and provide three
courses with with for three separate sets of guests who move round from house to house between courses.
Organiser Anne Joyner says it’s a great way to meet new people and everyone who tries it for the first time has come back for more. “You can do it as a couple or on your
own.”
It costs £25 plus a bottle of wine if you’re a guest, with the hosts providing the food and most of the wine as their contribution and all proceeds go to the pavilion
rebuilding fund.
All you need to do is put your name and address on a piece of paper in the village postbox next to the Royal Mail box by 6pm on Friday, October 15.

23rd September 2010 - Grand Occasion
The Parish Church’s Gift Day raised more than £1000 – a brilliant result and the biggest sum ever. Hornton Riders and Striders also did both Hornton’s churches proud
when they raised even more cash!
Jean Burden, Julie Stenley and Shiela Hillman walked between churches in the area, with Glen Walther as a guide, and raised at least £250 between them. Lynn Corke
rode her bicycle and had raised £150 at the last count.
Half the cash of the Ride and Stride goes to your local church and the rest to the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust. Well done everyone!

Hornton held its very own Last Night of the Proms on September 11 and raised more than £500 for village causes. It was a fantastic effort by Jamie and Zelinda Adam, who
set up a big screen with surround sound and a fantastic spread of delicious food.
More than 50 people turned up and everyone went away insisting that Jamie and Zelinda to do it again next year, so put September 10, 2011 in your diaries now!

9th September 2010 - Stride on Saturday
It’s not too late to raise money for Hornton’s two churches by taking part in the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust Ride and Stride this Saturday, September 11. You get
sponsored for cycling or walking to as many churches as possible. Half the money goes to the trust and the rest to your nominated church or churches.
And pop into the Parish Church for coffee on Saturday, when it will be holding its annual Gift Day. If you can offer a donation, so much the better, as it costs around £200
a week just to keep the building going.
There’s a special 7.30pm service tonight, Thursday, at Horley Parish Church to licence Brian Hyder-Smith into the Benefice . This Sunday, September 12, there will be an
11am United Service at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.
9th September 2010 - Snowed Under
This year’s pantomime was such a success producer Anne Joyner was snowed under with demands for another one – and she’s agreed!
This time it’s going to be Snow White and the Seven Non-Specific Gendered Persons of Limited Stature and there will be an open evening at 7pm in the pavilion this Monday,
September 13, for anyone interested in joining in.
“If you are interested but can’t make it, please ring me on 01295 670337 so I can add you to the list,” said Anne. “This time we will need quite a few adults as well as
children, musicians and technicians.
“Everyone’s welcome, provided they can get to Hornton whatever the weather for the performance on February 24, 25 and 26, 2011.”
9th September 2010 - Gold Blend
The coffee morning at Hornton children’s playground last Saturday made a tidy sum for the Helen and Douglas House Hospice in Oxford.
When the proceeds were totted up from coffees, bring and buy and white elephant stalls, lucky squares and the raffle - plus a donation from the Chapel coffee morning -
the hospice, which cares for desperately sick children, benefitted to the tune of £301.
9th September 2010 - Take Five
Hornton’s film festival, which was due to take place on October 9, has been postponed. Organiser Pete Whitehead said there were exciting films in the pipeline but not
everyone was able to finish them in time, so to avoid disappointment it was better to delay the festival - hopefully until later in the year.

9th September 2010 - Supersweet 60
It was supersweet 60 when a record number of bands and a large crowd of fans came together at Hornton’s annual music festival to celebrate the 60th birthday of rocker
Ivor Sawyer.
Ivor – a founder member of The Firebirds - tragically died several years but the band decided to put on a special effort at this year’s bank holiday bash to remember
what would have been a special weekend for Ivor.
Even the weather – a downpour interrupted proceedings in the middle of the afternoon – couldn’t stop the fun and village causes benefited to the tune of around £800.
Firebird front man Mark Bowes paid tribute to everyone who helped make it a birthday to remember.
“A massive thanks however must go to all of the bands who gave up their time and not inconsiderable talent for free,” said Mark. “We really do have some great local
musicians who were showcased here so do try and support them at gigs around the area - they really are worth it.
“Lastly a massive thanks to everyone who came along to support the gig and who dodged the showers to see the bands, it really is much appreciated.”
2nd September 2010 - Best Foot Forward
Jane Sheehan will talk to Hornton and District WI about Foot Reading tonight, Thursday, at 7.30pm in the Methodist Chapel. Jane has appeared on ITV’s This Morning and
is an author of three books on the subject. The WI is opening the meeting to visitors for this talk and for just £3 you can come and be amazed by her skills. The
competition will be for a fruit and vegetable monster.

Hornton Children’s Playground holds its annual coffee morning this Saturday, September 7, with all money raised to Helen and Douglas House, the Oxford hospice which
provides care for children and young adults. Pop in between 10am and 12 noon for coffee, cake and raising money in a good cause. It will be in the Methodist Chapel if
it’s wet.

It’s the most patriotic night of the year and Hornton’s about to hold its very own version for the first time!
Jamie and Zelinda Adam have already got lots of takers when they project The Last Night of the Proms on a big screen in their Millers Lane garden on Saturday week,
September 11. But they can still do with a few more folks so please sign up soon – and also contribute with a raffle prize if you can.
For just £15 for a single ticket and £27 for a double, you’ll great food, a free drink and a fantastic red, white and blue evening. There will be songsheets and flags to

from Pam Smith.
