Driving to London? Here's what you need to know about the Congestion Charges.

The charge is the driver's responsibility, whether your car, a loaned car or a hire car. Cameras read your numberplate as you enter or drive within the zone, match it within the database and wipe it once you pay. There is a £1000 fine for obscured number plates.

Charging starts on 17th February within the area of the attached 'zonemap' which is clearly signposted from a distance. Look out for the boundary signs as you enter the zone. The road is also marked. There is also signage for the cameras, and for when you leave the zone.

The charge is £5 per day between 7.00a.m. and 6.30p.m. Monday to Friday except on public holidays. It doesn't matter how many times you enter or leave the zone within that same day, or whether you spend five minutes or five hours within the zone; you only pay once per day to enter it. You still pay to park as normal.

You can pay at any time on the day until 10p.m. that same night at car-parks, petrol stations, 300 pay-point shops, online at www.cclondon.com or by telephoning 0845 9001234. After 10p.m. and until midnight the charge becomes £10. You will need your vehicle registration number, the date that you are paying for, and how you are paying. You can pay up to 90 days in advance, and by post at Congestion Charging, PO Box 2985 Coventry CV7 8ZR.

Penalties apply after midnight of the day when a fixed penalty of £80 will be sent to your home address, reducing to £40 if paid within 14 days. Non-payment increases the penalty to £120 after 28 days. Vehicles with three or more outstanding and unchallenged penalty charges may be clamped or towed away from anywhere within greater London.

Drivers of 'green' vehicles, LPG, duelfuel and electric, can apply for exemption by telephoning 0845 1234.

To the best of Hornton web-site knowledge these facts are correct, however it is your responsibility to check for yourself.
