JUMPA UPDATE

JUMPA 2008

There are various ideas floating around to make better use of the JUMPA site from tennis ladders to ladies' hockey. It has always been intended for multi-purpose use, so there's nothing to stop villagers getting together for a bit of exercise be it competitive or just for fun.

A booking slip is posted weekly on a notice board on the site, so all you need to do is book a slot. There are some block bookings for the school etc but plenty of opportunities outside these.

The JUMPA committee is always open to new volunteers with ideas and energy so please contact any of the team if you'd like to get involved.

Stop press - 2007 Golden Mile date moves

For all those hard in training for this year's Golden Mile sponsored run, please note that the date has changed:

Instead of 17 June it is now to be held on Sunday 1 July.

We will ask all runners - serious and fancy dress - to be at the starting line at around 10.30am and, as usual,we will set off in supervised groups from the far end of Quarry Road, running back to the finish line just at the top of Millers Lane.

So, get your trainers on and have a go. You don't need to be a record-beater - just a good sport - and you'll be raising much-needed maintenance funds for our very own sports ground at the same time! Families and pets all welcome! Look out for more details on the posters on village noticeboards.

JUMPA update: 2007 summer sports start here...

At the JUMPA AGM in April, the committee was re-elected. The JUMPA court and grounds have been getting excellent, everyday use right through the half-term and Easter holiday period and are proving popular with all ages.

Items of interest discussed at the AGM were:
  • Storage: We are looking to replace the net storage locker with something more substantial, as a matter of urgency.(This is probably in place by the time you read this.)
  • Spring Clean: Thanks to all those who helped with the "tidy-up JUMPA grounds" morning on Saturday, 5 May. A tribe of willing hands got stuck into weeding, cutting back and generally making the site look good for the summer. The trees and shrubs we had planted are starting to get established and should make a nice leafy backdrop by this time next year. We need to keep the grass mown and the weeds chooped on a regular baisis - anyone offering help now and again would be very much welcomed, so please let a committee member know if you could be an occasional pair of hands.
  • Reminder: Please don't use bikes or roller-blades on the court surface as it is potentially damaging the surface. Please wear sports soles.
  • The net: On a couple of occasions, the net winding mechanism has been broken. Please be aware that you only need to slacken off the net not unwind it completely. If you find anything broken, please let a member of the JUMPA committee know right away.
  • Bookings: the system is in operation and we would like everyone to use it. There's a weekly booking sheet inside the covered noticeboard attached to the court fence, so please check it out if you would like to book a slot and to be sure you can use it when you want to. Also, the school now has regular slots of usage during term time, so please try to avoid these.
Enjoy JUMPA this summer!

1st August '06 - JUMPA - Booking your slot and getting involved this summer

The JUMPA ground is now up and running - and it is being well used every day.

As it's becoming popular, especially since the school holidays started, we are introducing a simple booking system: there is a temporary arrangement for this in place down at the court and we are awaiting more permanent signage.

All you need to do if you want a particular half-hour-long slot is to visit the site and fill in your slot on a rota. The bookable slots are from 8am till dusk. You will find that any regular weekly fixtures are already blocked out on the rota and that you will be able to fill in your bookiing in any slots that stil remain free.

Of course, you can also just take your chances and turn up and, if no one else is there or those who have booked haven't turned up, then you just play.

There will be a revised timetable once school term starts again. In the meantime, the pre-booked slots for regular weekly items at the moment are:

Monday, evening - Brownies
Tuesday, evening - Ladies 5-a-side
Friday evening - Men's 5-a-side
Saturday, morning - Kids' football

Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions for what to do with the rest of the JUMPA land. We'll report back soon on next steps.

The planting scheme to screen the area and finish off the landscaping is still planned for this autumn (by which time we hope there may be a bit more rain to keep everything alive) and the framework of the court has now been painted green (thanks to hard work by Ian Harris) so it blends more into the scenery.

A tip for the tennis net:

During the summer, it's probably better to leave the net up and just slacken it off when you leave, unless you know the next people won't need it. When dismantling the net, there is no need to take the actual net off the posts as this make it much harder to put up again. Just take the post out at each end and wind the net around the posts before you put it back in the locker.

22nd June '06 - It's a Snip

It’s been a long time coming but, after years of energetic fundraising and hard work, JUMPA - Hornton and Horley’s Multi-Purpose Play Area - is officially open!

Robert Nunneley, a member of the family who generously donated the land near the pavilion upon which the area is built, cut the ribbon at lunchtime last Sunday and celebrations officially began.

JUMPA was christened with three five-a-side football matches - played by children, ladies and men - and the big crowd who turned up were refreshed with a bar and BBQ.

The ribbon cutting was just the climax of the JUMPA actrivities last Sunday. Earlier, 36 people took part in the ever-popular Golden Mile on Quarry Road. Andy Perry came in quickest at five minutes 25 seconds. Jane Senior was the fastest girl at six minutes 30 and Alex Cox, at just one second slower, was the speediest youngster.

At the opening ceremony, JUMPA chairman Steve Woodcock thanked everyone who had helped turn the project into reality - the Nunneley family for donating the land, the various sponsors who had given grants, the JUMPA committee who had worked tirelessly and the people of Hornton who had supported events with their presence and their cash.

13th February '06 - JUMPA Kick-off Scheduled for Spring!

We're into the final weeks of construction at the JUMPA multi-purpose playground site at the foot of the Pavilion.

Once basic construction is complete, the construction team will wait until the better weather in the spring to lay the final top surface. Then it's just a case of painting on the lines and setting up the posts and we are ready for the kick-off and first serve.

The JUMPA committee, who met in late January, are planning an official opening event in early summer, probably in June, details of which will be publicised nearer the time. There should be plenty to do and enjoy, even if you're not sport-mad. Everyone is encouraged to come along…

Thanks to supporters, sponsors and grant providers
There are many individuals who have donated money and time - and the Nunneley family who provided the land in the first place. Without their generosity, determination and hard work we would never have managed to make this a reality for the village. Thank you.

Thanks also to the sponsors and grant providers - Cherwell District Council, Awards For All - the National Lottery, SITA UK (nationwide waste management and recycling company) and the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. We will be inviting representatives of these bodies to the opening event.

A further grant is being sought for landscaping - so the team can buy and plant trees and bushes around the new playing area. This will help to screen it and to soften the way it looks in the landscape, as well as to create a wind-break. There is also an idea to plant a small number of Christmas trees for future use on the village Green.

"Liaison is underway with potential local users of the playing surface, including the school, who hope to make use of it during term time. The aim is to ensure that everyone is able to access it fairly," explained JUMPA chairman Steve Woodcock. He is keen to hear from anyone wanting to book the court or to use the temporary surface before the final green surface goes down. (But please be careful not to wear muddy boots on the surface.)

Calling new members:
The JUMPA committee is still eager to attract new members to its ranks: to help run and maintain the sports ground once it is open and help with mini fund-raising to keep everything in tip-top shape.

"We are particularly keen for anyone with a young family or belonging to a local group, who will make use of the play area, to get involved in the JUMPA committee and help to keep things on track," said Steve.

Contact Steve on 670795 or JUMPA secretary Jane Perkin on 670701.

27th October '05 - Jumpa Ready for Lift-off

Final details for the JUMPA digging and building work to get started are happening this month with a view to the contractors, Beacon, being on site from early December.

We now have all the funds in place to build the main multi-purpose play area, which will be suitable for tennis, netball, basketball and five-a-side. There will be high fencing all round and two access gates.

Of course, the fund-raising can't stop completely: we will need to landscape the surrounding area and decide on its best use. And we'll also need ongoing funds for maintenance and other costs. Hence, you will find occasional JUMPA events still popping up on the calendar - like the next Progressive Dinner next Feburary, which will raise funds for both JUMPA and the Pavilion. (See full details in this issue of The Gossip.)

Lots of good ideas for making the best use of the overall site have been put forward and, as work gets underway and the main playing surface nears completion in early 2006, we will need to decide which ideas are most feasible and useful to the village and all age groups. Hence, there will be a JUMPA meeting on Wednesday 14 December, at the Dun Cow, for anyone who would like to join the committee to discuss ideas and options. Just turn up at 8.15pm or let Chairman Steve Woodcock have your views if you can't be there.

26th January '05 - JUMPA: Half-way there - now the pace picks up...

Creative ideas and hard work lie behind the funds raised since 2001 for JUMPA (our Jubilee Multi-Purpose Play Area). The total now tops £18,000 - around half of what we need to get construction underway on the hard-surface play area that will sit at the foot of the field directly behind the Pavilion.

Over £8,000 has been raised through a wide range of events and initiatives by committee members and villagers from Hornton and Horley who will benefit from the area once it's built. The remaining £10,000 has come from a grant from Cherwell District Council - a grant that will only be forthcoming once we have all the money in place to start work.

With a fixed expiry date of mid 2006 on the Cherwell money, now we need to pick up speed to raise the rest of the cash. The clear aim is to have all funds in so we can commission plans and a builder and get construction complete by summer 2006.

"That means we have to be in a position to have all the finance in place by this autumn," says JUMPA chairman Steve Woodcock. "We have a series of events planned to keep on bringing in some money but we are also working hard to try to get grant money awarded, from local authorities and other sports grant-givers, although the money available is much in demand and it takes time for decisions to be made."

If anyone has any ideas on who we might approach for grant aid, please get in touch with JUMPA Secretary Jane Perkin (Tel 670701) who is coordinating applications.

In the meantime, here's the outline JUMPA Calendar for the next few months:

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY:

Friday, 11 March, 7.30pm - JUMPA Film Quiz, Dun Cow. Teams of up to four. Entry £2 a head, payable on the night. Raffle. (Part of the Hornton Film Festival that weekend, being run by Pete Whitehead.) Ask Gwyneth if you would like some bar food before or during the Quiz.

Saturday, 12 March - Hornton Film Festival.

Saturday, 23 April, 7pm -Progressive Dinner - funds to JUMPA, the Pavilion and a donation to the Gossip.

June - Annual Golden Mile Run - date and time to be fixed.

3rd September '04 - Aunt Sally Hits the Spot for Jumpa

Sharp-eyed Aunt Sally shooters lined up in teams of up to six to take part in the JUMPA fund-raising contest at the Dun Cow last Wednesday evening.

Seven teams of Hornton and Horley villagers and friends competed in a friendly game of two rounds, where an up-and-under throwing technique proved to be the winning style for the Bell Street Bashers team who carried off top prize with their overall score of eight.

The event raised £90 for JUMPA (Jubilee Multi-Purpose Playing Area) - and there is already talk among enthusiastic participants of holding another Aunt Sally contest during the day next summer.

Thanks to everyone who took part and to Martin and Gwyneth for hosting the event, as well as Adrian for setting up the Aunt Sally gear.

Next for JUMPA is another, ever-popular Progressive Dinner in mid-September and a Quiz evening at the Dun Cow on 2 October. Look out for details soon.

5th August '04 - 12-month target for JUMPA

The JUMPA (Jubilee Multi-Purpose Playing Area) committee held their AGM on 29 July at the Dun Cow.

All officers were re-appointed and chairman Steve Woodcock thanked the committee for their hard work, not forgetting many spouses and other villagers who have also helped and come up with ideas.

Raising money to build a hard playing surface next to Hornton Pavilion, the team have staged a wide variety of events, most recently the annual Golden Mile Run on Quarry Road.

Says chairman Steve: “Total funds for the joint Hornton-Horley project now top £7,000, plus the grant. So, at a total of £17,000, we’re about half way there. We’re waiting to hear from two other funding applications and busy looking at other grant options.

“The Cherwell money needs to be used within the next two years and will only be forthcoming when all of the £30,000+ amount has been raised so that work can start in full. So the focus now is on raising the balance of the money in the next year so we can make a start and get the work done.

“We’re very grateful for all the enthusiasm in both villages - support and participation have been great.”

Dates for your diary...coming up next on the JUMPA event calendar are:

Aunt Sally: Wednesday, 1 September, 7.45pm, Dun Cow. Teams of six. Prizes. £2.50 entrance per head.

Progressive Dinner: Saturday, 11 September - look out for details soon

Quiz Night: Saturday, 2 October, Dun Cow - details to follow

Halloween Fancy Dress Party: Saturday, 30 October, at the Pavilion

`Miss Saigon’ trip: Wednesday, 15 December (date change)

JUMPA - make it a date for 2004

The joint Hornton-Horley JUMPA committee met on Wednesday, 7 April and finalised a series of events through to the end of the year, with a few extra ideas also on the schedule but yet to get fixed dates. We are also hoping to hear back from three possible grant aid sources in April or May.

As ever, we have tried to create a calendar that will appeal to all ages and provide some good value entertainment rather than purely asking for sponsorship or donations (although we are very grateful, of course, to those villagers who have continued to make donations in the last few months).

Investigative skills will be required for the next JUMPA event which will be sited on the JUMPA land on May Day, as part of the overall May Day celebrations in Hornton. The event will be “Metal Detectives”, with contestants trying out their skills at finding buried treasure using metal detectors and a good nose for seeking out the bounty. Signs will direct those keen to have a go to the JUMPA land, just behind the Pavilion, where the treasure will lie hidden - so those not familar with the site can also take the opportunity to see what we're working for and view a poster on what we are aiming to build as a hard-surface play area. There may also be another JUMPA sporting challenge on the football field.

Among other events coming up are:

The third annual Golden Mile Fun Run will take place on either Sunday, 13 June (11am) on its usual route along Quarry Road. £10 sponsorship target/entry for adults. £5 for children and special rates for families. Followed by a BBQ afterwards at the Dun Cow in Hornton. For those really keen to sign up sponsors and get their names down, sponsorship forms will be available from the JUMPA team on May Day.

We're finalising a date for a summer Horley v Hornton Ladies cricket match at which there will also be a BBQ. Details to follow.

There will be another Progressive Dinner on Saturday, 11 September, open to residents of both villages. Look out for posters and entry forms in July and August.

Back by popular demand, the JUMPA Halloween Fancy Dress Party will be on Saturday, 30 October at the Pavilion, complete with disco and prizes for the best outfits.

Raising funds for both JUMPA and the Pavilion kitchen extension, there will be a themed Skittles Night at the Pavilion on Saturday, 20 November. Teams of six will need to sign up in advance for tickets and dress in `team kits' of their choosing - the wackier the better!

Jill Offord is kindly helping out the committee by arranging a JUMPA trip to see Miss Saigon in Oxford on Friday, 10 December. There will be a 54-seater coach and tickets will be £36, including travel - a substantial discount on the usual seat-only price. More details soon.

Updated - 13th May 2003

Jump to it this Sunday For The Big Opening!

A special walk for JUMPA, Hornton and Horley's multi-purpose play area fund, takes place this Sunday, May 18, after which the site for the play area will be officially opened. Walkers from Hornton should meet at the flagpole in the village at 11.15am, when they will walk over to meet those from Horley at the little green by the village church at 12 noon. The JUMPA site will be opened at 12.45 and then there will be a picnic in the children's playing field (opposite the Dun Cow public house in West End) at about 1 pm. All are welcome to join in and people are asked to bring their own food.

The official opening is a good time for JUMPA's organisers to say a big "thank you" to everyone in Hornton, Horley and beyond who has come up with imaginative ideas and put in a lot of hard work to raise money for the fund. It's been going for less than a year and more than £3500 has already been raised.

Highlights of recent events include £137 raised at the Quiz Night at the Dun Cow in February and £95 raised at the JUMPA bar at the Hornton Allsorts' Medieval Theme Night in March.

Those who took part in the second JUMPA Progressive Dinner Party on Arpil 5 had another unforgettable evening and raised more than £360. There are hopes to hold a third dinner some time in the winter as some people have already said they could not make this one but would love to be involved next time.

The land for the multi-purpose play area has now been fully transferred from local farmer Tim Nunneley, who generously granted it to the Parish Council, so now JUMPA can make a proper start on seeking grants. Watch this space for more news on how the fundraising is progressing.

A look back on JUMPA's first six months - and how the programme and plans are shaping up for 2003…

Thanks to all villagers of Hornton and Horley who got the first round of fund-raising for JUMPA off to such a big success in 2002.

We've already raised well over £3000.

Starting with our Golden Mile fun run back in June and finishing with the JUMPA Bingo on 2 December, we managed an inventive programme of activities that has won positive feedback from those who took part.

Thanks should go to everyone who has helped with the fund-raising, including the Allsorts who staged their special Sports theme night, Mr Wain who ran the bingo and Liz Jeffs who has helped out with various events and who `led the charge' on selling the new Hornton Christmas cards.

For those who didn't get any of the cards for this year, or who had already bought their stock by the time we got ours printed, there are plenty of cards left for next year. If you'd like to `buy early', please contact Steve or Chris Woodcock and we'll sort out your order. There are cards of all designs left - £1.20 for a set of four or 50p each for individually selected designs.

Make it a date in 2003

Realising that there are many other worthy fund-raising causes in the village - not least the simultaneous campaign to extend the Pavilion kitchen - we are working hard to come up with JUMPA events that give people real value for money - such as entertainment, rather than seeking pure sponsorship too often. Hence, the Halloween party last November and the first Progressive Dinner Party, which was a big hit.

This approach underpins the activities we've got planned for 2003 too:

8 February Progressive Dinner Party II. You'll have seen posters around the village and there's an entry form in this issue of The Gossip. It will run just like last time, with diners perambulating from house-to-house for each course.

22 February Quiz Night at The Dun Cow. Back by popular demand, Ollie and Steve concoct the questions to test us out. There will be prizes for winners - and a raffle. Bar food will also be on offer. Entry is £2 per person, for teams of four - sign up on the list at the pub and pay on the night. And let Gwyneth or Martin know whether you want food as well.

June Golden Mile Fun Run. Mark Wright is planning to stage the event again, along Quarry Road. This time, to turn it into an occasion for all the family by arranging a barbecue to take place immediately afterwards. More details soon.

28 June Beach Party. Get ready to don your shorts and bags your sun beds… The Pavilion turns into `Bell-Street-by-the-Sea' for an evening of disco and barbecue.

Fun-packed schedule shapes up for JUMPA

Dates for your diary

Updated - 20 August 2002

JUMPA Fundraising Event, click for more details

After a highly successful June - when the Jubilee Golden Mile fun run raised over £700 on its own - the fundraising team of JUMPA have lined up a feast of activity for this summer and autumn.

The action kicked off in August with a Treasure Hunt and Cheese & Wine garden party, the latter held in The Manor's back garden. This unusual combination was scheduled for Saturday 17 August. Testing clues, thought up by Oliver Fickling, put around 50 villagers through their paces. Overall winners were the Walther and Miles families' joint team, with Maddie and her brother Arthur Thomas (Velarde) carrying off the youngsters' prize.

We estimate that the event raised about £150, including the bar and raffle. Thanks to all who took part and who donated prizes or time - or both.

Hot on the heels of this treasure trail comes the Allsorts Theme Evening on Saturday 7 September. As it's in aid of JUMPA this time, there's a sports theme to the evening. Look out for posters soon. Tickets will include an evening meal - every dish carefully calorie-counted for maximum fitness value, of course (but no one will force you to add them up!).

A month later, on Saturday 5 October, an unusual `Progressive Dinner Party' event is also being organised, with dinner hosts nominated around the village and guests donating funds to JUMPA for the pleasure of enjoying a three-course dinner at three different venues. See the form in the latest issue of The Gossip - or contact Anne Joyner for details.

Hornton Hallowe'en Party, much enjoyed by many last year, makes a welcome return to the Pavilion on Saturday 2 November - a definite date for your diaries. This time it's all in aid of JUMPA. Once again, fancy dress is "de rigeur". There will be a disco and prizes for the best (most horrific) costumes. Tickets will be on sale in October.

Last but by no means least on the planned itinerary is a Twelfth Night Barn Dance, scheduled for Saturday 4 January 2003 as an antidote to the post-festive anticlimax and return to work. Look out for more details in the next issue of The Gossip.

Stop Press

Three quotes are being sought for the building work on the JUMPA site, with latest estimates looking like the cost will be over £30,000 - a little more than originally thought, mainly due to the making up of the ground and the surfacing work, plus fencing and access. Grants are being sought, but we need to raise considerable funds ourselves.

JUMPA 'kicks off' its fundraising challenge

Planning approval granted

Our new sports area has been given the go-ahead - and it's going to be a busy summer for the committee members of JUMPA (the Jubilee Multi-Purpose Play Area) who will lead our design, building and money-raising efforts…

Along with fellow villagers, the team face the challenge of raising around £30,000 to take care of the construction and first year maintenance of the JUMPA hard playing area, which will be situated in the corner of the field directly behind the Pavilion.

Judging by feedback so far from residents of all ages, there seems to be plenty of enthusiasm for this multi-function area that will cater for tennis, five-a-side football and as many other sports as we can fit into the space. It will certainly fill a gap in sports provision in this parish.

Horley residents are also keen on the idea: the eventual site will be accessible by both villages on a booking basis and two Horley residents, Mark Wright and Lynn Andrews, have joined our JUMPA team.

Grant aid will be vital to complete the project: committee chairman Steve Woodcock is leading the process of identifying the best grants available to us, locally and nationally. Thanks should go to all villagers who have contributed ideas on this front.

At the same time, we must demonstrate that we're keen by raising as much money as we can. This began in earnest on May Day when, among other activity, there was a JUMPA `wheel of fortune' stall and Lynne and Ollie Fickling sold Jubilee `paraphernalia' too.

Steve says: "There's no shortage of good ideas on how we might raise money. Everyone is very supportive - and you definitely don't have to be an avid sportsperson to get involved. It's great too that it's been agreed that the proceeds from our Jubilee celebrations will be divided between JUMPA and the Pavilion kitchen extension. This will give us a real boost right at the start."

And this is only the beginning…Here are some of the other varied fund-raising activities already lined up for this Jubilee year and beyond:

  • There's an extra JUMPA event planned for the Jubilee weekend - a revival of a `Golden Mile' run open to all ages and abilities, at 11am on Saturday 1 June. (Some of you may have signed up for it on May Day.) The course starts at Varney's Garage on Quarry Road and finishes at the turning into Miller's Lane. You need to raise at least £10 of sponsorship to enter - see full article in this issue of The Gossip.
  • Hornton folk taking part in this year's Oxfordshire Fire Service Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, 19 May will be raising money for JUMPA. If you didn't have a chance to sponsor them on May Day, then contact Ollie Fickling (tel. 670739).
  • Hornton greetings cards will make their debut soon. They will be high quality notelets and cards with views of our village and are being produced by Pete Whitehead with other members of the JUMPA team. It is hoped the first batch will be on sale in a couple of months, perhaps in time for the Jubilee weekend. If you have any excellent images of the village - photographs or sketches - please let Pete know (tel. 730530).
  • The next Allsorts Theme Night will be on a sporting theme - it will probably take place this summer and all proceeds go to JUMPA.

Some generous villagers have also already offered to donate money to JUMPA. To deal with these kind donations, there are plans for a `sign up for a square' scheme, where donations of a certain value get a section of the new sports ground dedicated to the donor…More details later this year.

Helped by your feedback, the JUMPA team aim to get their plans developed sufficiently to hold a presentation for interested villagers by the summer.

Meanwhile, back on the practical front, Ollie Fickling is investigating pricing for the construction of the site (which will have a tarmac surface) and it is hoped details will be available for the next JUMPA meeting.

Finally, for now, look out for JUMPA's lively new logo, co-devised by Stuart Clegg and Eleanor and Freddie Campbell. The logo will appear on the back of the new greetings cards and - eventually - on the sign erected next to the sports area. (The black-and-white version is shown here.)

See for yourself…
If you'd like to see the plot reserved for us, on land donated by the Nunneley family, then do drop down to the Pavilion and you will see that a new, temporary fence marks out the boundary.

Although the JUMPA committee has a full quota of participants, ideas are always welcome. Please contact Steve Woodcock (tel. 670795) or Ian Harris (tel. 670541).

If you would like to see the full details of the Cherwell District Council planning approval for JUMPA, then please contact a member of the Parish Council.

Future updates on JUMPA will be carried in The Gossip and on this site.
